IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

POST DRAWINGS YOU NEED HELP WITH

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

1.-screenshot the image and post that instead

2.-change camera capture settings to something smaller

3.-send to computer and resize in picresize.com

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

Take your time, you can do it.

Jesus fuck. So apparently I can’t do this shit at all. Maybe that’s why I stick to sketching; attempting anything beyond that is a pathetic failure.

Do very long studies, like, spend 6-7 hours painting one reference image. Get the line-drawing down as tight as possible and render the forms like you see in the image, thinking as 3 dimensionally as possible (though that will come with time)

it's a very common writing style to avoid capitals. i don't have bad grammar and i use punctionation (i over use brackets and semi-colon especially if you want to play detective).

the guy was working on that picture for a day, he said. idk how much he means by that, but i assumed 6+ hours.
in that time, the arms didn't change, the legs didn't change, the neck didn't change. he didn't experiment with those lines hardly at all. he said that he was sad in the end it looked bad, after all that effort, but where did the effort go? clothes. so obviously it didn't look good.

you also quoted me just asking a guy if he disliked trannies-- i wasn't crabbing. i actually liked it.

1. Is this a passable way to sketch, or is it still too scratchy? Should I try to follow the reference 1:1 as much as I can, or is it acceptable to cut loose?

2. I was told to follow Hampton for studying limbs, but I don't grok him very well. I've also watched some figure drawing videos, and they all start by saying things like "first draw the ribcage and the hip bone". It's difficult to tell where these things are. Are there any "here's some stock photos, let's draw their planes and internal anatomy" books/videos, like Bucci's head drawing course?

>> No.5000426

>>5000408
when it comes to learning to paint/draw there isn't one single path, there's at least hundreds of different paths usually tat yield the same result, sure you could just use tons of layers for a painting and then some artist would only use a handful of it and would reach the same point as yours. being able to do that relies more of your gut instinct than say some rules and guidelines thats only good in laying down the foundation but not the overall structure of a piece.
another example is the anatomy first and gesture second, having good anatomy is definitely great if you're just doing concept art in some basic straight on or 3/4 pose but isn't really enough to say make a full on illustration with the character doing an interesting dynamic pose where the limbs are foreshortened and the torso as well. another one in anatomy if we include bones is also how to actually learn it, some artists know about the outside first and then inside, but some learn it from the inside (bones) then after that learn the muscles afterwards to attach it to the bones.

Im a weird situation where I studied anatomy in Nurses College, so I understand where the bones and muscles are and what they're called, its just that over the years the actual deep physiology gets lost for "work knowledge" instead. So I have to basically relearn all this information and its frustrating. I regret not getting into drawing then, I would have fucking mastered anatomy so quickly. I had access to cadavers, it was amazing.

I highly recommend "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain".
I tried lots of beginner books, but they all started off with "boring" fundamentals and I couldn't get into it at all. Drawing on the Right Side starts with what can basically only be described as therapy, not even trying to teach you how to draw, but discovering why you CAN'T draw the way you can so clearly imagine it (hint: it's not because of your hand).
It's as much a neurology book as it is a drawing book and honestly, I would recommend it to anyone, even if they didn't draw at all, just for the mind blowing experiences you get when starting the exercises and realizing how strongly you are held back by the brain's "categorization engine" when trying to be creative (not just while drawing). I know it sounds dumb, but this really is "just one simple trick!" to see the world completely different (and I mean the "going outside and looking around wide-eyed, stunned by the newfound beauty" kind-of-different).
It's in the mega, so just download it and give it try, you won't regret it and it'll improve your life permanently, if you and up drawing or not.

When drawing from imagination I noticed that there's two different paths I tend to take. The first is construction like the books teach you, drawing boxes for chest and hips etc. etc.
The second is just imagining a pose and then simple "copying" it from my mind's eye with no construction, just putting the lines on the paper.
Sometimes it feels like I'm discovering a drawing that's already there while putting it on the paper and making it visible.
I've had much greater success with the second method since my poses tend to look stiff if I use construction, but I also feel like it's kinda cheating.
Does anyone know what I'm talking about and where the place for this kind of drawing is in the process? Should I first put the rough sketch down from imagination and then try to fill it with a constructed mannequin? Is it a crutch in general?

both really, if you look at your drawing and compare it to the reference you can see where you don't know how some of the body part fit. Look at your drawings shoulders it is too stiff compare to the models, her has a little curve inwards making the right(her left) shoulder less visible. You notice more of those things with practice but those little things help the drawing a lot.
