What is /ALT/?
If you're looking for a place to post your cartooning then you've found the right general. This is /ic/s 1st and only merged hub where both Eastern and Western stylization can coexist peacefully, hence the double title. However, by community demand and long history, this is favorably an Anime general.
>Rules & Guidelines
(1) Any form of cartooning is welcome; so submit and receive feedback from others. (2) Please resize your images before posting. (3) Share your knowledge and (4) Remember to not be afraid of asking for critique. Most importantly I encourage you to keep discussion at a civil level, but you're more than welcome to share your opinions.
>I came for anime. Why does the image OP say cartoons general?
To distinguish from the anime study thread (janitor supported). Please post your studies there and personal work goes here.

What resources helped you guys learn how to draw in a stylized manner?
I know my realistic anatomy (more or less) but if I try to draw something more stylized I just freeze or end up drawing an uncanny monster of half stylized figure half realistic anatomy.

I know all the cartooning books but I'm wondering how you guys went about it.

I think it helps to study other artists with styles you like and to try to break down their construction and shape language. Trying to learn another artist's style can be a nice sprinboard to figuring out your own stylistic decisions. There are a lot of model sheets for animation available online if you want to get inspiration for how other artists figure out the details of character styles.

The fact that you said " brushing colors" or "a good color brush", shows just how well you are versed in the arts. You don't know what you're talking about, and you don't know what you're looking for, therefor no one is going to help you. You completely lost me at " strong, even colors". Did you even bother rereading what you typed out, or did you honestly expect everyone to decipher your shit?

I said a good coloring brush, a brush that's good for coloring. I provided an image for what I meant by strong and even. Seems like you have a stick up your ass, you could have just ignored me instead of writing essays about being a master of prose. I guess some artists use multiple brushes throughout the process of coloring, so asking for a "brush" was inaccurate.

On that note, you don't use the opacity brush which you are show casing to "color" because it doesn't solve the problem of "even" color as the retard in the OP puts it.

Even something as simple as texturing the dark areas would help. If you look at Kojima's art, she adds a lot of detail to the background that moves in a certain direction.

For example, in this image everything from the candles in the foreground, the buildings in the background and even the texture of the paint moves vertically.

Not trying to crab, its just I think the limbs are too angular or too tubular. The hands and feet stick out like a sore thumb with the tubular limbs. The expressions are completely lacking. The gap on that ass is way too wide. You do it all the time and it's sort of at the point where you will more than likely not change anything.

I see what you mean. I'm a lazy person who foregoes details and muscular forms for the pose, so I'll focus on applying my anatomical knowledge next time. These drawings were literal gestures i decided to color in, so next time I'll be more diligent into putting work into those anatomical forms. Thanks for your input.

I have a new mission to see how many bones i can remove from their bodies until my figures are just bags of skin. I think i was able to remove all their bones from their torsos and arms - the heads are still too structured

Also trying to boost line weights, but it’s going kind of crappy so far. The ink looks really sketchy, i think i may be using the wrong tools or I’m just not very good at beefing them up.

If you are using fineliners the only way to get better line weight is to go bigger. Like A3 or maybe even A2. Otherwise switching to brush or dip pen should get much better results but it could be a pain in the ass to get accustomed to them after fineliners.

I've been filling tonnes of sketchbook pages lately with random sketches of OCs etc. It's fun but I'm rapidly hitting a point of complacency and want to improve my fundies. I’m rotating between 01, PN and 005, but I have not figured out a good algorithm for the order of the lines. I do 01 first for a rough ink, then erase the undersketch, then reshape the figures and dark spots with the PN, and back through with the 005 for details. The PN is making it look chunky. I should use it more sparingly, but then i don’t have enough dark spaces for the linework to be balanced. Maybe i should just block in some blacks?

Biggest crutches are history, layers and lasso imo, not that it matters.
And no, of course you don't need to learn to liquify, although it's pretty useful to make adjustments, one could make a point that it'd be better for you if you learnt to fix things by your own means, as that would enable you to do it in any media.
It ends up being another tool, use it or not.

My point was not to ask some gay , whiny question about what is and isnt a crutch. Or whatever. I'm all in favor of tools over rules. But I'm digital art noob and have no idea how to use software for anything but the most basic shit. I didnt even know you could use perspective transformation until like a week ago and it blew my mind.

I was hoping to learn what other tools are extremely useful for the sketching process. I was asking about liquify because Ive heard people post about it but I dont even know what it is or does.

I'm like in no way of being perfect or good when it comes to rendering and stuff, but you gotta render using forms and 3D shapes.

Her torso looked weird and out of shape because of how it was formed, so I did a bit of a quick fix, slight moved her awkward breast and changed how the shading looked. I also did a bit of a fix on the hair because you can render it in chunks but you can always explore that in your own way. Using the yellow for the hard highlights is really nice though.

I really like your colours by the way, they're really vibrant and cool-looking, just keep practicing your anatomy and explore rendering of forms - can use references for this

Keep it up!

It kinda reminds me of gross-out aesthetics than used to be common in cartoons like Ren and Stimpy, combined with anime. It's not really to my own tastes, but I like how all his art could not be made by anyone other than himself.

It's not texture specifically, it's a lack of familiarity with the tool. He just needs to spend more time with digital, and digital painting in particular.
If he wants to learn digital, he'll need to learn more about color too. With marker, there's a certain degree of cohesiveness of color that comes from the behavior of the material, but in digital you have to be more exact with your color choices (especially if you're doing flat color).
