I think by finding yourself I mean learning to accept your grievances and where you are in life and maturing to the point where overwhelming emotions don’t warp your perception of reality. I want to talk to you more and ask what you’re angry about but I shouldn’t derail the thread. It is good at least that you have a creative hobby/outlet. I feel like that in the long run is much better for your mental health than doomer playlists. Processing negative emotions is important but those communities tend to wallow in the sadness and I think encourage each other to stay low, from what I’ve seen.

Hello, been a while thread! For those of you who haven't worked on a portfolio before and don't know where to start I included some samples of portfolios I found online. (Also edited the challenge to include it.)

These are by no means the best or exactly what you should be doing but should give you an initial idea about what a portfolio could look like or what it should include. Keep in mind that I am personally biased towards visual development and animation portfolios so I strongly encourage you to search for good portfolio examples for the jobs you want to be going for in the future. Another place to find good inspiration are artbooks. Whether those for games or animation, they should give you a good sample of what pre-production art looks like.

Figure out what you want to gear your portfolio towards.

Don't forget what the function of a folio is! You don't have to render everything out perfectly, a turnaround, for example, doesn't need to be painted and polished, but just an accurate simple, clean drawing.

If you're not doing your own story/project I highly suggest taking either a story from a book, inspired by a fairytale/folklore, or something that is quite old but recognisable, so you can avoid getting too influenced by existing materials.

Doing some preparation work before you start on the drawings might help you a lot!
-Build up moodboards or pinterest boards to help you maintain coherency and a style guide. The visual language you choose should be reflected in items/creatures/characters.
-Plan out what will go where before hand, you don't want to have 2 character designs and 7 environments if you're looking for a character design position, for example.

Wanted to do art related things as a career since high school, but wasn't sure in which discipline. Couldn't possibly convince strict parents with such an unclear goal so I went to college to study engineering. Moved to a European country away from parents, spent lots of time just figuring things out, then decided to get back to drawing because the environment is better suited for a hardcore introvert like me (as opposed to filmmaking which I initially thought what I wanted to do). Just the way he constructs things and also the mindset that I have to get the right line in the first try by ghosting countless times.

His way of constructing is really weird and it's hard to merge with gestures, for example. I never understood figure drawing because of this. The way I do it now -- after learning from Steve Huston and vilppu -- is to start with shapes and then build the form on top of those shapes. Shapes are easy to mold and easy to join with gestures. But drawing with shapes is like a big taboo in drawabox and you're taught to learn to think straight in 3d. You miss out on the shape design if you do this.

And the thing with the line is so tiring. Ghosting every single time before putting every mark just takes so much mental energy. It was so bad that I had months of burnout. I was afraid of drawing because if a single mark takes so much effort, imagine drawing a whole piece.

Hello dad your friendly infamous daddy here. I want to share something and asking for some advice.

I'll keep this short, I am enrolled in a local art school here in MA. Long story short I have this teacher in her early thirties that I want to sleep with. Problem is shes married and has kids.

I don't need cues atm bc I draw everyday already out of habit, but I have a planner now and every 2 weeks I marked a deadline for when I'd like to finish a piece, I'll work on more cues and scheduling. For example I'm seeing if I can set 4 days for planning and the rest for illustrating in order to meet the deadline. Also timing how long an illustration takes with the manictimer so that I know what is a reasonable goal to set.
