For pure sketching with a pencil, any paper really. Different papers work better for different materials - so if you use alcohol markers, you are going to want bleedproof paper while watercolor needs heavier stock.

I've found calligraphy forums generally know their shit when it comes to paper and seek guidance there.

The Rhodia notebooks are similar and much better for ink, as are the Leuchtturm1917. They're just smoother paper and don't bleed as much, but I still buy the Moleskine's if I'm traveling and need another sketchbook because they're in every airport in the U.S. I carry a sketchbook pretty much everywhere I go but at home I prefer Hammermill "Color Copy Cover" paper - the 100lb is pretty much the same as drawing on bristol, but you can get a whole ream of 8.5x11 for fairly cheap. Great for pencil, great for ink, easy to run through a printer if want to print a digital sketch and ink over it with a lightbox etc.

I don't think I’ve ever liked moleskine paper in the hardcover sketchbooks - cahier is ok for throwaway warmups and the sketch albums came in decent landscape sizes but they really don't hold a candle to stillman & birn or as >>4985285 said with rhodia and heavier hammermill. Also agree that the higher grades of strathmore like their mixed media books are nice.

Mixed results with cottonwood - their experimental sizes are fun to play around with but overall they're damn overpriced for what you're getting.

Yes.
But actualy no.
Moleskine as a brand, was created in 1997. So it has nothing to do with Hemingway and Picasso. Yes, they used similar types of notebook, but it would have been hard for them to actually use that brand, despite what the marketing wants you to believe.

I've seen multiple good reviews for khadi and pentalic as 100% cotton paper watercolor sketchbooks, but I'm not sure how true it is for the latter these days as I haven't seen it advertised as 100% in a while now. Personally I've only used global art materials watercolor sketchbooks and while I'm not wild about it them, they're decent for the price and if you're not doing heavy wet on wet work.

I like strathmore for toned paper and canson’s mixed media books but I tend to go on the cheap end with sketchbooks and grab whatever’s on sale that’s of a decent quality. I’m just forever salty that moleskine’s quality tanked hard because it used to be pretty great and decently priced.

Okay, I laughed hard enough at your overreaction that I'll bite. We were always told to buy a ream of https://shop.kellypaper.com/i/astroparche-cvr-sand-065-2338m-85-x11/1412 for our toned studies in the dynamic drawing classes I've taken, so that's really the cheapest way to get a lot of toned paper at a decent weight minus binding. Otherwise as the other anons have mentioned, strathmore toned paper's fine and so're the spiral bound cachet earthbound sketchbooks.
