IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

POST DRAWINGS YOU NEED HELP WITH

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

1.-screenshot the image and post that instead

2.-change camera capture settings to something smaller

3.-send to computer and resize in picresize.com

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

Take your time, you can do it.

This may sound harsh, but are you even trying?
Your lines are wobbly and stiff, focus on making them better so that you properly convey the form of the ball. Practice straight lines, diagonal lines, curved lines, ellipses etc. Then in addition to that, practice placing the axis on the ball and the loomis faces (I assume that's what you are doing)

Ive been trying for around 2-3 hours a day bruv, these are the best circles I can do. If I go any faster to try to get smoother lines they just lose the form. I'm trying but its not improving very much. As for the Axis, I might be spatially retarded or something, I'm thinking of just buying a ball and drawing Axises on that and using it for reference

>> No.4986469

so tracing is fine so long as you don't get caught doing it?

>> No.4986481

>>4986466
Try an be looser with your lines, they don't have to be perfect. I'm terrible at drawing circles and ellipses especially, but they don't have to be perfect, just close enough. Ghost your lines if you feel it helps.
I only have one picture to go off of but it feels like I can see the huge tension in your arm when you draw those circles in your picture.
Also, if you've been doing this for two weeks already, move on to something else if you feel like you are stuck. Draw from reference, copy a photo, draw some random shit from imagination. Don't get stuck doing Loomis exercises if you feel frustrated or if you feel like it doesn't work for you right now. Return to it later on.

If you have a tablet, get proper software for it.

Disclaimer: You CAN make good art with a mouse & microsoft paint, but I'd argue it's far harder than it needs to be. Don't handicap yourself by forcing yourself to go digital if you don't have the tools for it.

There's no reason to not use a reference when you're drawing something that you don't really know how it looks. You can't imitate reality if you're not working from it. After the initial sketch try to find reference for all the specific things that you want to induce in your final image. Find a reference for the pose, find a reference for the hands, find a reference for the clothing folds, find a reference for the face and helmet, find a reference for the Imperial guard uniform you're going for. I recommend using your phone and a mirror for pose reference and hands (especially hands since a specific reference for the thing you're trying to do might be hard to find). You're well on the way bud.

The anatomy is pretty alright, the pose is just stiff and a little unnatural for the action. Go and lift up something heavy like that; how does your body look? What kind of motion do you see/feel from it? How does the weight affect your arms? Then think of the action itself - what would the body look like after repeating the motion a few times?

You don't have to exaggerate the pose like Tom's here, but it gives a good idea of how the body sits before making a striking action.

Don't start rendering before the sketch makes sense. Put work into making it look good and you drawn everything according to reference to the best of your ability. I suppose I wouldn't mind seeing a dark night sky filled with more stars to really make the snow in the foreground pop out more and push the idea that we're in some rural location. I guess I also wouldn't mind the girl looking back with some dread on her face to push the viewer's eyes towards where all the eyes are. Doing a watercolor a day, just finished this one. I don't know what it is but every time I try to paint anything with more organic complexity (my last one >>4985686 I really liked but it was pretty simple) it comes out feeling one-dimensional and wrong. Should I just focus on drawing a bit maybe? I mostly just rough outline from imagination.

Alright. I ended up redrawing the entire arm and neck area. Paid close attention to my reference, and atleast to my eyes it doesnt look, I suppose, "anatomically retard". Did some basic colouring with some shadows because I still suck really badly at even 3 tone rendering. Also gave it a background, which was my first time in my life painting in a somewhat traditional way. I intend to use this as a Christmas Card for a /tg/ secret santa. Is it passable? 1. the face looks like it was randomly generated, draw a lot more heads from ref and from imagination
2. salad fingers, study some hand anatomy and learn some simplifications
3. perspective is wonk, we're looking down at the box but straight on at the bow, the forearms aren't foreshortened properly so they look like stumps, the background doesn't follow the same perspective as the figure is attempting to. where is the camera? is it tilted up or down? draw more boxes in perspective, study construction, this will solve all of these issues with time
4. linework is inconsistent and sometimes straight up chicken-scratchy, just draw more
5. paint bucket colours but some very obvious texture brushing sticking out on top like a sore thumb, there's just no consistent style here. using textures like this is always very kitschy and screams beginner digital, but it's something you fix over time by painting more and starting to understand light and colour and material rendering. do lots of still lives and lighting studies
6. there are no values and no value structure at all, everything is dictated purely by the fill colour and the contrast is all over the place, why are the trees so dark when they're receeding into the background and all the more so considering there's a snowstorm or something where they should be victim to much more atmospheric perspective, etc. etc. again still lives, photo studies, master studies, and lots of thoughtful practice

i cba to try and fix this specific piece but if you wish to keep progressing there are some avenues for you to begin with, good luck anon san

simplification ties in with construction, it's about taking anatomy and simplifying it into a less complex three dimensional form that you can draw more easily. you can do it with boxes or cylinders or any form you see fit. learn the anatomy, simplify it into a useful three dimensional approximation, and then use that to construct your imaginative anatomy - draw the simplification (box form, cylindrical form, etc.) first, and then build the details on top. this allows you to incorporate perspective more easily, once you know that, and prevents you from just making a weird scribbly flat representation of something, like the hands here. almost any book will teach you this, loomis is the go-to example

>face auto generated
i had no idea what it meant when i wrote it either. basically it's so painfully generic and flat that it looks like it came from one of those character generators where you pick out the features and essentially create an avatar, except those are cleaner because they usually have better linework and nicer rendering along with perfect symmetry. it's more or less a symbol drawn face, and to get out of it you need to observe and attempt to create a wide variety of different faces from different angles, alongside construction and lighting and all the other good things that make a portrait work. it's a hell of a lot of work but there it is, do with it what you will

forgot still life

it's the classic art course go-to, if you don't happen to have a cast of a greek bust on hand just set up some crap, apples and cans and teapots and bowls, and shine a lamp on it and paint it

it's an exercise that allows you practice your observation skills and accuracy, the construction of the forms (this spraycan is actually a cylinder! and the bowl is almost like a hemisphere! so i can try to draw a cylinder here and turn it into a spraycan by building on the cylinder, etc) the perspective of the objects, natural light and colour, values in terms of picking out shadow areas and highlights, brushwork, etc etc. it's a good exercise for the artist who uses his brain because all of these concepts will be applied in an original piece, so observing how they work in real life and applying those ideas to your original piece is a+

at the level i've described it it may still be too complex, but there's still no harm in doing it even if you've never picked up a brush in your life

the work you posted certainly doesn't show it and it's not because of the medium. by mini painting i assume you mean colouring little warhammer figures and such, but there the work of the form, anatomy, perspective and lighting is done for you - you just have to put a colour on top. when it comes to drawing, you have to build that form yourself through your drawing, otherwise it will be nothing more than flat colour on flat lines.

i'm sorry boss but there's no tutorial to fix it, you just have a lot of learning and even more practice to do

It is but it has a purpose, if you want to draw "artistically" in a semi realistic way at the skill level you want then you'll to slog your way there. You should be doing "artistic" work all the time alongside your studies to implement what you're learning, so it shouldn't be constant misery and it will have its peaks and troughs

By longer poses I mean like 30mins or even longer than that, so you can take some time to actually compare your drawing to the ref and see where you're going wrong and make observations. If you rush it but you're not confident with what you're actually doing, you'll get nowhere. Slow first, and then fast

Daily practice is always good, just don't do it mindlessly. Take some time to study anatomy alongside your figure drawings and then incorporate that anatomy into the drawings next time, etc. Always be mindful of what you're doing, pick an area to improve and focus on that, take notes, etc etc over time this will lead to guaranteed progress

Not the guy you were replying to, but I'm pretty sure Proko has videos that go into detail on how to hold your pencil, how to set up your paper etc.

Other than that I'd recommend just watching videos on how to shade, and then you pay attention to what the instructor is doing with each stroke, how they are making them etc. After that you really just need to try out variations yourself, see how your actions directly influence the result on the paper and then adjust your technique accordingly.

Something that I think should be important for you to keep in mind:
Art is highly individual and subjective. Everyone does things a bit differently, and I think it's not useful to spend a lot of time on technicalities like how to make each individual mark outside of making sure they are what you intend for them to be (straight, curved, thick, thin etc). It will vary a lot from person to person, and while you might feel right now that you need some very solid instruction with a step-by-step manual, I assure you, you really don't. Once you get mileage you will settle into what is comfortable, and you will also start to notice how different stroke patterns and pressure correspond to a different look on the canvas.
Maybe look up examples like Peter Hans dynamic bible, he has a chart at the start with warmup exercises for shading, and there are many more like it from other teachers.

Always the same, in place of actually considering what you've been told you will put up a front in an attempt to compete against some nobody anon because your ego being validated is the only important thing

The other anon said exactly what I said but with a generous extra helping of "look at how other artists do it", which I would assume is common sense to some extent, but even within art there are many different media that are held in different ways and even the same media which are held in different ways by different artists. There is no de facto right way to move your pencil across the paper, the motor control you're describing can't be taught and only comes from practising it yourself, and nobody is going to be able to tell you how hard to push because even that varies with different grade graphite and different brands and different media. It's something you can ONLY learn by doing it yourself and seeing the result and adjusting course accordingly.

The fact that you're trying to come up with shitty analogues for why this is bad advice just shows that you don't understand at all the nature of learning, and given that this is quite literally ground zero of drawing and it gets exponentially more complex as soon as you can actually put pencil to paper, if you're not willing to push it yourself without someone literally holding your hand and drawing for you, you're going to run into an impenetrable wall at every single step of the way and you will never grow

Literally just go fucking draw, in this case it's not even a matter of "wandering around in the dark" as it might be with other theory based aspects of art where "just draw" has some obvious caveats. Your mindset currently is permabeg and I hope to god that you figure that out for your own sake

>> No.4988923

>>4988887
While Art is subjective there are benefits to having structures in place to improve your art. For example while you could just do ten thousand gesture drawings on your own and probably get some idea on what to do, following the Vilppu method is going to drastically improve your gesture drawings much faster.

I don't think asking for tips on pressure control, manipulating tone and value or when to hash versus when to use contour lines and when to blend is as trivially easy as breathing. In fact in digital art is very easy to find whole videos dedicated to each one of these.

Even something like how to hold your pencil is something that should be talk about, for a long time I held my pencil when I draw the same way as when I write now I have a much better grip that gives me more consistent lines.

The decade was literally a waste of time when it came to actual drawing skills. I only refined my taste, basic tool control and composition, the actual act of drawing is totally different from copying and enhancing references, as I found out to much surprise and disappointment - you gotta get the mileage in, you gotta start thinking in 3D, you need to be able to see form to draw! It’s a language designed by humans to trick each other into thinking they are looking into a window to a reality you have created

With that in mind, don’t waste time tracing. Look up the shrimp learning method. Find Pete han’s dynamic sketching on online-courses.club (free). >>4988871
Anon, you are absolutely going in the right direction, dO not give up.
Here’s a critical tip: look at a contour around a cylinder. See how the very edges of the curve turn very quickly compared to the lazy, long turn in the front (perpendicular with your eye)? That sudden speed in turning, a result of compressing of form and seeing lots of it squished into a small area, is actually a key to a lot of advanced techniques like fresnel effect in speculars, subsurface scatter etc. It is fundamental you understand it. Take a sharpie and a loo roll tube or a cup and draw a contour line around its edge. Go and draw 30 cylinders referencing your actual object. Nail that ring. “Draw through” - do the complete ellipse, not just the visible part of the contour.
Then do your organic using this principle

Good luck!

your anatomy is nonexistent, your proportions are nonexistent, because you have neither of these your drawing looks worse by default but not only do these things exist in the image you linked, they are also exaggerated to create more interesting and dynamic shapes (especially the hips, thighs, waist, tits, eyes, ratios between them, etc.)

on top of that, the image you linked has much more confident and dynamic linework, while yours is still in the underdrawing scribble stage and just all around worse

How do I stop being so shit at perspective? Do I just keep grinding?

unironically, boxes really do help with this. Also, there is a book on perspective that might help, you can check the sticky.

ok, i got it, the trick is not doing "quick sketches" at work on a desk thats 10 cm below eye level ,stll dont know how to do smile dimples / creases or convincing hair for this one fucking character in particular, its supposed to have a big lock of hair that swoops to the right to break tte silhouette and the rest of the mass of hair to come over the opposite shoulder to break symmetry

the crab is my favorite one, you look like you are doing ok though. Is it humans that are a pain in the ass?

>> No.4990318

Yes. My creatures/vehicles have been mistaken for works by famous concept artists while my humans have been mistake for drawings by small children.

Too round. Unless you're Jonah Hill or something, they gotta be flat at the top. Think of how the fat is situated.

Is Drawabox worth it? 250 boxes can't be anything but a meme, no? Should I keep at it?
