Non-early edition.

This is a thread to discuss all kinds of digital drawing hardware: non-display graphics tablets, pen display tablets, portable tablets and more.

>What should I buy?
State your:
>Budget
>Location
>Type (display? non-display? portable?)
>Size (in inches)
>Other information
>Previous equipment

If you have any additional questions, ask them.

>Recommended tablets:

Intuos Pro 2013 - Great value, and the nibs won't wear out in 5 seconds like they do on the newer model.
Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite - Budget portable display tablet. Very solid drawing experience with Wacom EMR tech.
Used iPad Pro 2nd Gen 12.9" - Best option for a display tablet.
Used Cintiq 22HD - The only worthwhile large display tablet
Galaxy Tab S7+ - Good premium alternative to an iPad Pro

>Avoid:

XP+Pen, Huion, Gaomon and every other Chinese brand - Poor build quality, lackluster pens, bad tilt, horrible customer support and the displays are not calibrated. All Chinese brands are basically the same because they're all centralized. Also watch out, Chinese Companies are known to shill aggressively, even on 4chan.
Cintiq Pro - Terrible value. The drawing experience might be good, but you're paying way too much for an unreliable product. Dead pixels are frequent, as are black screens of death.
Microsoft Surface Pro - The N-Trig digitizer means you will always get wobbly lines.
Lenovo - Bad drawing performance.

anything bigger in terms of display tablet is either going to break your budget or strip away a whole shitload of creature comforts. like people are saying here, the budget display tablets from XP-Pen and Huion are dumpster fires and i've yet to meet someone who was satisified with their purchase. if you're okay with navigating windows just to practice drawing, and don't mind sacrificing the portability, grab a used 1080p cintiq.

still, i've worked with some pretty big and expensive tablets and I will personally say that its still not as fun as being able to chill in bed with an iPad and paint on Procreate. but again, if something big is what's important to you, a used cintiq is gonna treat you the best.

its definitely a bit slippery on just the glass, but images are noticeably clearer without the haze, so i don't bother. i've probably learned to work around the slip at this point, regardless, and im a lazy bitch too so if i really need to draw a straight as fuck line i will just use the Procreate shortcut for that. if you're dead-set on learning digital illustration as traditionally as possible and don't want to use these shortcuts, grab the expensive sticker and some extra nibs. you'll only be going through them as fast as you would on a cintiq, anyway.

That webm has been the bane of my existence. Wacom and Huion have recently decided the enormous losses in keeping up this operation are no longer worth it. Serious question: what is the point of buying a screen tablet? Why not just buy a regular tablet that can be used anywhere outside and do all sorts of things besides drawing? If you read these threads, you probably already know. Ignore Chang Guy. Look for actual experiences, not recycled webms.

Deco Pro Medium (using simple paper as a "sheet", because it's awesome) is a pretty solid choice at this price range, especially if you don't want additional excruciating nib costs. But keep in mind that the digitizer sometimes won't work on startup and you will have to look for the cause. In fact, I was going to prove >>4980516
wrong, but Photoshop doesn't work right now for whatever reason. She should be a bit familiar with PCs to the extent that she can easily set up WinTab for whatever graphics program she uses, but that is usually fairly straightforward. All of this also goes for Wacom, sadly.

If you want a screen tablet, then you have to go much deeper into your pockets. Keep in mind that Wacom in particular skimp out on screen quality on lower end devices, and the $300 Wacom One, being the bottom of the barrel, has a pretty abysmal screen. Not that you can't draw on something like that, but it sure will be intrusive.

Standalone tablets (Apple, Samsung) are usually even more expensive and come with a lot of drawbacks, like limited functions and controls. Once you see how powerful Photoshop's brush settings are, it's hard to go back.

So, Deco Pro, or a cheap Wacom Intuos are my recommendation.

Screen tablets such as Cintiq, etc, can have their screens fucked. If you press hard enough, you can still end up with grooves/deeper scratch marks in the tablet.

The Chinese tablets are still ???? in quality relative to wacom (but it's probably way better than picking up a shitty tiny wacom tablets in any case if you have no money simply because of carpal tunnel) and are plagued with driver issues such as jitter. Screen tablets can have their screens fucked and colour accuracy is potentially an issue. An anon recently made an issue where they literally chipped parts of the tablet by dotting on it. Also -- parallax, as always, is a big issue for screen tablets.

iPads can be fucked if you're not constantly buying a new one after 3-5 years and you're gambling on app developers supporting it (it won't happen). You're relying on apps not taking one whole second to draw one stroke if you're trying to use it like a cintiq and there are fuckloads of apps that are subscription only. Plus, there are numerous reports of customers who got third party repairs getting blocked from getting any servicing done at apple stores and getting anything fixed/replaced is expensive as a fuck

Chang Guy: Wacom, tablets using Wacom EMR, and maybe Apple. STAY AWAY FROM ANYTHING CHINESE EVER BECAUSE THEY ARE ALL TAPERED WITH CONDOMS AND FLEXTAPE AND WE CAN'T ALLOW THE CCP TO SHILL!! WINNIE POOH TIANANMEN SQUARE FREE HONKONG LOOK AT MY WEBM!

Chang: Wacom are usually a solid choice except for the wear on the new nibs which are also harder to DIY than the old ones since they are a custom cut. XP Pen have gotten a lot better over time, and the Deco Pro is pretty much equal to the Intuos Pro at this point. You don't get rotation, but you also don't get insane nib wear and more than 10x nib prices, so it's a tradeoff I'd say. That's it for screenless.

The current lineup of XP Pen screens looks solid enough and are a budget alternative if you don't want to afford a Cintiq Pro. Better not buy Wacom screens below Cintiq Pro, the screen quality sucks. Current Cintiq Pros also have heating issues. Does not mean they are bad to use, but it's something you should keep in mind. The be-all-end-all top range for screens is still a Cintiq Pro.

I would stay away from Huion. They are not quite there in the drawing department, and they are still using Micro USB in 2020 too.

After six years I'd decided to replace my Cintiq 13HD since the screen got scratched enough and the cable was now so loose that any movement would cause it to briefly turn off and on again.
I just wanted a replacement but I guess they don't make them anymore, so I grabbed a Wacom One today. Feels the same but half the price I paid initially half a decade ago.

It's strange they try and brand it as 'bare bones ultra basic only for beginners!' but looking at the specs... It's identical to the bigger, expensive ones but 'it doesn't have the buttons, and the pen doesn't have an eraser'.

Why s7 and not the s7+?

iPad is better in every way except for using the tablet as a desktop display tablet, which the s7+ wins with superDisplay.
The s7+ also feels better to draw on without a screen protector. With the iPad, you won't get clean, straight lines unless you buy a paperlike or get used to using smooth stroke.

If you're interested in 3rd party, that's also fine but they're more subject to quality control slips so its a gamble it seems.

This is fucking stupid. Do you have any idea how many times I press that undo button per minute? Every time I do it I have to lift the pen 2 cm so it doesn't get registered anymore and only then can I press undo with my finger.
Samsung why do you do this? I refuse to get better at line consistency. Fuck you, let me molest the undo button until the fucking glass breaks.
Is there a way to use the touch and the pen at the same time? Google and duckduckgo couldn't help.

The 6 and 7 are just way too small, fuck that it's tiny.
The 7+ fine for traveling I guess but in general it's not super good. Drawing on the screen isn't magic, feels awkward. the pen is meh, it works, but doesn't compare to a real tablet, the lag is the same on home screen and most apps but less in the samsung's own app.

Don't trust the mobile shills, unless you're going on a trip tablets aren't worth shit. The pc experience is still where it's at.

I really like Krita. it's a combination of being powerful, comfortable and reasonably fast.
There are also

>SAI
It's polished but super bare bones, like the bones bleached by the sun in a desert. There's ONE brush with 10 different presets, and that 's it. No editing features, no tweaks no shit. The hotkeys and everything are very nice and friendly, but there's just nothing else.
>CSP
It tries to combine SAI and photoshop, but misses either. It's not as comfy as sai to draw and not as powerful as PS for editing not even close.
In addition it's also a purely single threaded program that's just slow.
>Photoshop
It's virtually all mighty, it has all the editing features, in fact it invented them and is also slow. I can create a 60k by 60k canvas and take an easy and quick stroke with a 10K brush across the canvas and holy shit, it actually works, i had no idea.
But the workflow and interface are just pulling teeth. Adobe despise the artists, they want all those art customers to fuck off with their dirty money money, they only care about the photos.
Every action requires either 5 clicks, open a menu and pull a slider or press some awkward hotkeys with both hands. All of the above require you to remove the pen from your work and poke the menu with some tiny boxes and sliders, as if intentionally pen unfriendly.

That's why I went to Krita after PS. I can just do some things by hand as long as I don't have to suffer the photoshop workflow. Imagine having to use a slider to change the size of your fucking brush, in every other app you just do it with a comfy hotkey.

I used only PS for two years and I hated every moment of that.
The most trivial thing imaginable - changing your brush, something I do twice every second.
>reach for the [ ] brackets on the wrong end of keyboard and actually look there because I can't blindly locate then with one hand.
>the shift + alt scaling
It is just implemented wrong way around. It's bad and uncomfortable. SAI, Krita and SCP all nailed it, brush scaling is the way to go, even the shitty web based uses it.
>right click and pull a tiny sliders
The easiest option in PS but it's really not the right way to do it.

Krita has a set of different hotkeys, but they work because EVERYTHING AT ALL is in the bottom left part of the keyboard. You don't need to ever move your hand anywhere, it's always in the right place always working, never searching for the fucking brackets. left hand isn't even meant to press the brackets, those are the right hand keys.

iirc CSP/SAI/PS share the same brush size increase/decrease shortcut. It is kinda annoying but I basically learned one set of shortcuts and know them all. Krita does seem to have interesting brush customisation features, though, but I decided I'd get more out of learning more 3D or VFX programs over learning yet another 2D drawing program so I haven't been able to play with it yet.

1060 is a fifth rehash of an old design. They added tilt support and a pen without a battery, but the enclosure itself is an old design, it's fat, it squeaks, and it has a loose chinesium micro-USB that disconnects whenever you breathe at the cable.

There are better options.
>Deco 01V2
Virtually identical minus the negatives. It's slim, tight, uses a USB-C and feels premium to the touch.
>Huion HS611
It's an actually new design. Slim, USB-C, and it has a touch slider. Sliders or whels are completely useless for anything except Photoshop. In photoshop they save your life because you can scale your brush with it.
>Huion HS610
Same but with a physical wheel to rotate
>HS 1161
Same as HS611 but fuckhuge
>Xp-Pen Deco pro
It feels premium. It's actually made of aluminium, it's by far the thinnest, thinner than a cigarette, slightly bigger than medium and it has not only a spinning ring but even a fucking touchpad like a laptop, which is completely useless for anything except scrolling through porn with your left hand. What was that schizo? You managed to type something? Oh alright, let me look.

Oh yeah, the eyebrowless dude did a vid about aggressive underhanded chink marketing tactics. Sucks to be him I guess. Anyway, back to the point.
When Dave Greco for instance says in his review vid that theres no paid promotion going on, you go and claim that he's outright lying. You do this because you have to. Even though its an industry renowned, major artist who very rarely reviews anything and doesnt need huion for shit. You HAVE to because if ANY source contradicts your shitty boring webm, your position falls apart. Kind of sad to watch.

You say you arent an apple/wacom shill because you only recommend used products. But we know based on your other posts that thats not true, because if people here recommended used chink tablets, youd still call them shills.

I dont need to gaslight you. You genuinely seem to believe that there's both an army of chinese shills raiding this place, but also that its actually just chinese dude making all the posts.
You believe that theres a giant conspiracy all over youtube wherein major industry artists are all actually paid chinese shills.
You believe that huion, xp pen etc have all grown like they have because of a massive plot involving fixed reviews and that all their tablets actually suck, with their success simply coming from the fact that customers just miraculously stfu about the problems. You are either schizophrenic, or a sad aspie who keeps doubling down in a "im actually only pretending to be retarded" rabbithole.

The Wacom One has a smaller work space, more wobble, less reliable drivers and a mediocre pen despite the name brand. You'd have to save up for a contiq to get something worth the money from Wacom.

Alternatively, if you wanna be afraid for something that is cheap and works like OP wants you to be afraid of. You could go for the white man's China choice and get an ipad.

If you want a crypto pedo larp laptop, either will work.
If you want a portable drawing device, your android phone with a wacom is a better choice.
Surface tablets are almost acceptable. I'm using a thinkpad X1 tablet and the pen it ships with is shit and the screen melts after a week of use. They discontinued the line after my 2018 model. The iPad pro is the only all-in-one pen device that doesn't do pic related.

Thanks I guess, I was looking into those is because I'm looking for a laptop to do some software development in linux, while working on some animation in my spare time.
In any case, I was looking for a graphical drawing tablet, but I have a really low budget. (100-200 dollars)

Well luckily for you, its not 2010 anymore. 100 Is enough to buy a perfectly capable med sized tablet. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NMmKvPUsbFg

And no, its not a fucking shill, its dave fucking greco.

Could anyone who uses ipad 9.7, 10.5 or 11 share some of their work? Have trouble deciding on the size. It seems like every art i've seen on smaller ones have somewhat of a loose form because of shorter brushstrokes and constant pinch zooming. Is it true?

A display for 100-200 isnt going to be great Im afraid, even with the budget options. Youd need at least 500 for an acceptable display tablet.

Okay, thanks for letting me know though. I might end up buying a Thinkpad anyway for muh software development, but I'll look into the Huion tablets for sure.

A Cintiq Pro is different from a Cintiq.

Pros are more expensive, out of your price range.
