IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

POST DRAWINGS YOU NEED HELP WITH

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES TO ~1000 PIXELS:

1.-screenshot the image and post that instead

2.-change camera capture settings to something smaller

3.-send to computer and resize in picresize.com

There's a new (and cleaner) sticky in town! You can see it at:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

Take your time, you can do it.

Should I just keep drawing women from reference? I didn't get a whole lot of critical feedback last thread. I know I'm bad, but I'd like to know what, exactly, I need to work on? I figure having multiple pictures there's some sort of through line for anons to pinpoint all my flaws (of which there are many) I posted all these:

try drawing upside down, they are so hard because we are very good at recognizing faces so any imperfection will ruin the illusion.

thats why alot of old master type paintings will blend shadows or lose the bridge of the nose in the cheek, it creates a more realistic effect because it leaves your brain to fill in the blanks and so it doesnt look off,

To get the most out of it... you have to read the text. It sucks, and it sucks more with Bridgman and other older resources, but a lot of the best books are very text heavy and the text is crucial. That said, a lot of the Loomis concepts are now fully embedded in the whole world of illustration training so you can always look up some videos about whichever topic, might make it a little less dry.

Yours are roughly drawn stick men, not cartoons like the below ones. You don't have any value in your drawings, the lower ones have some mid tones brushed in. You're using a rougher textured brush, the lower image is using a hard, round brush with no line variation or opacity. Your guy watering a plant tells me nothing about the guy, where he is, where the plant is or what size it is. The lower drawings depict 4 people interacting, they're close and comfortable. It seems to be a family gathering, one is the mother / grandmother figure, one may be the dad. Two appear younger. One is happy and the the others seem to pay attention as he speaks.

Your story boards have NO story - the images would have no relation to eachother if not for the text explaining them.

You need practice on every fundamental. Your lines are messy and impatient, shading extremely messy, perspective essentially absent. One of the first things you can do is stop scribbling in your lines. Don't try to draw things loose and sketchy because you don't think you can get them right if you draw them tight. Experienced artists know where they can get away with being sketchy - for the time being you need to be pretty exacting and careful in your approach. You should not be trying to do "10-20min" shaded figures, take your time to get them right and speed will come down the road.

My main goal is to make a webcomic so with that in mind are these books a good starting place.

Don't scribble shading onto your comic style stuff. It should generally be black, white, or hatched (as the typical inking process doesn't allow for gray). Your lines, hatching etc. should be definitive and tidy. Your anatomy exists but gives the impression of discrete muscles with no skin over them (the "ridge" muscle on Venom's right arm is outlined too hard). The hatching doesn't really follow the form in most places, which flattens it out a lot. Don't skip the hands. They're hard, I know, but skipping the hands is like skipping the head - you need to have them in there, they're the parts you can least afford to leave out.

I've thought about this, but I'm not sure this matters to me, since I don't have the goal of working for a company drawing superhero comics. I just want to draw in the way that looks the best, and so I'm trying shading stuff and see if it works

>Your anatomy exists but gives the impression of discrete muscles with no skin over them
What solution do you suggest?

>(the "ridge" muscle on Venom's right arm is outlined too hard).
Yeah I also thought that about that ridge, but I kinda liked it and was afraid to ruin it by going over it again

>(Was aiming for a basic base tone, 1 highlight tone 1 shadow tone)
I would recommend hightening the contrast firstly since it's very low in your drawing. Made also throw in some core shadows here and there to further emphasize form, since I notice there are a few cast shadows already like under the shoulder guard and right (our left) breast. Maybe core shadows plus reflected light along the right side (our left) of the arms, legs, head, neck, and torso. So basically, a strong, coherent shadow pattern. The contrast doesn't need to be absurd, but just a bit stronger would help. A tip regarding coloring skin, because I struggled a lot with that for a long time too: light and shade on skin will very rarely, if ever, just be two different shades of the same color. The shadow side is almost always a completely different hue, whether the reflected lights are really extreme or the shadows are just cool relative to the warm light side. Skin is almost never "light brown, medium brown, dark brown". etc. See my picture for one example of colorful skin, but there are many many more such examples of this. To fix this, honestly I can't really think of any one book or video. I personally learned this by very carefully studying and analyzing the skin colors used by artists in paintings I admired. In general, it's better to overshoot color than undershoot it. Crazy and over the top is better than muted and boring. At least in my opinion. Aside from all that, proportions are not bad. The structure and anatomy could use some work. That's all standard stuff. I'm too busy but maybe somebody else can do a red line for you.

What are the best things to draw to gain skill? I can draw fruits and trees etc. and they look good because they have big bumps and irregularities so even if I don't draw accurately it can look good and realistic. Look at them, they come to this place when they know they are not pure. Tenno use the keys, but they are mere trespassers. Only I, Vor, know the true power of the Void. I was cut in half, destroyed, but through it's Janus Key, the Void called to me. It brought me here and here I was reborn. We cannot blame these creatures, they are being led by a false prophet, an impostor who knows not the secrets of the Void. Behold the Tenno, come to scavenge and desecrate this sacred realm. My brothers, did I not tell of this day? Did I not prophesize this moment? Now, I will stop them. Now I am changed, reborn through the energy of the Janus Key. Forever bound to the Void. Let it be known, if the Tenno want true salvation, they will lay down their arms, and wait for the baptism of my Janus key. It is time. I will teach these trespassers the redemptive power of my Janus key. They will learn it's simple truth. The Tenno are lost, and they will resist. But I, Vor, will cleanse this place of their impurity.

This is my first few sketches in maybe 8 years, I started using an app called Sketch-A-Day while my girlfriend is locked down in a different city, just so we have something to do. Turns out to be pretty fun. I usually only take 10-20 minutes on each one, I might take longer if I get myself a proper pencil and an eraser.

How do I >into art? It’s fun and I usually hate myself if I’m bad at something, but I kinda like being shitty at this. I don’t really know where to go from finding cool images and recompositioning them in my journal though.
And finally, is it gay to draw? Feels pretty gay.

technically the entire thing, as lines are symbols
but the fact that you drew the tiddie confidently, yet basically guessed at the legs suggests to me that because the legs weren't in a position you knew, you couldn't draw them
hence you're going off the images in your head rather than what's there
also don't want to stick my foot in my mouth here, but i have trouble believing the side of the hip is pure black yet that pure black is nowhere else on her figure. like her torso and the rest of her body are in entirely different lighting environments
hope i helped

This is very helpful and I'll take this advice. Like you mentioned about the legs though, I could've sworn I was drawing what was in the reference. Could it be my lack of anatomy about legs that is causing this lack of confidence?

Also about form, take this image for example: I used a reference and I am doing my best to draw what is there (in other words, drawing the shadows rather than just the outlines of stuff), but I have a feeling you might say it lacks form.

Is it a matter of perspective with organic forms that I need to work on?

for the legs - it helps to directly attack subjects you're struggling with, so just draw a ton of 4-5 minute legs in weird positions you until you get better at them
regarding still lives, it might help to desaturate your reference images and focus entirely on matching what values you see
another thing that might help you is copying other pencil drawings to see how they use a wide range of value. maybe unironically look at some of the later bargue plates
i'm not that familiar with rendering in pencil, but i do know that it's difficult
