You can use any form you want to block in a figure. You can use the box, oval, or cylinder any part of the body. It's that freeing.

What matters is that once you work over it, you give it the proper anatomy and form.

You have to know the landmarks of the figure to twist and turn it and add anatomy onto it.

Like the other anon who replied, Vilppu has you thinking of every form you draw as ALL 3 forms. Every form is simultaneously a sphere, box, and cylinder, no matter how you look at it. (This is some abstract stuff I'm getting at, but I'm not bullshitting you).

You can draw an oval form yet still know the front planes, side planes, and bottom planes. Essentially you visualize a box around it. You can also draw an oval form and run ellipses around it. In that way, every form is a series of stacked flattened cylinders. You can also draw a bunch of boxes and block it in first as spheres, so you can get their size, placement, and depth easier. Every bony landmark is a tiny sphere/point in space.

So... to answer your question, you need to think of the oval form as a box form. But don't actually draw a box. Just know the corners. You also need to see every form as a cylinder that you can run ellipses over. Every form is a fragment of a cylinder. This is why professionals and intermediates don't think in spheres, cubes, and cylinders anymore. They think in forms.

Not really, because the lines get everywhere. You can if you want, that's one of the exercises Vilppu gives you in his lectures. All you need from the box are the corners, so you just need to put down some dots for that.

Tbh i think you should just draw traditionally until you feel like you got a hang of your hand/eye coordination. I see a lot of /beg/s doing worse then their actual skill because of the disconnect between tablet and eyes. It's just easier to get a feel for it when you can watch your own hand and move the paper around physically to get a better angle for the lines.

Someone said not to chicken scratch, but i don't think it's that bad of a case. (You get more confident in your lines when you can see your hand as said earlier. Might help here.) You have to draw from life to learn how life looks, don't coin flip everything you do without reference. Find specific reference for the thing you're trying to do. You don't need to copy 1 to 1 a image for it to be useful training. Take your drawing here. You clearly know what you want to do with your hand but you just have no idea how it really looks. Take your phone camera, hold a kitchen knife and use a mirror, and get the reference you need for specific things yourself. (Do this as much as possible)

If you want to paint digitally it's not hard to transfer your trad stuff that you sketch to photoshop and clean it up. Just use a scanner app on your phone and take a picture. Use photoshop to sketchlift it so that all values turn into opacity.

Would you recommend the ipad as a drawing tablet? Wacom seems to be going to shit, and chinese alternatives are controversial at best. I'm intrigued by the ipad despite it being so expensive and doing so much more than i would use it for.

I am really bad at learning by reading. Would taking classes be easier or are there some alternatives? It's hard for me to work without having the possibility of feedback.

I don't really have experience with other tablets to tell you how good the ipad is compared to others. The last tablet I used was a wacom from like 2005. So its better than that. The pencil is really cool. The big ass ipad is a nice size for the arch of the elbow. But I don't really know. My family already had an Ipad they didn't use, so I just got the pencil.

I think you're using too many straight lines so it makes you falter when you get to carve instead of a sharp corner since faces aren't made of sharp corners. Try making the forms with more curves. It should help you feel the form.

Are you drawing from imagination?
Use more models as references and measure proportions as you go. Also anon you're very good at drawing butter faces. Your first one I was sure you were fucking with us ans drew a man's face to be funny. Look up the proportions for faces. The mouth should be the same distance from the nose as it is from the chin. Even with perspective, that face is off and she looks like a chinlet.
