I dont know where to go from here, i draw these sketches and now theyre kinda okish but i dont know how to progress to take them to the next level, people say take more time but wtf do i do with more time, i drew this in about 5/10 minutes and just looked at it like well what can i even do with another hour or another 10 minutes? this is just the extent of my skill with drawing a face currently

Read the fucking sticky holy shit, go to /beg/, people have been telling you as much for weeks now, do you think you're above practicing or reading a book, like everyone else before you had to do? 10 fucking minutes and you are at a loss? The person who commissioned the character loves it, but I feel like it's not where it should be. I wasn't really a fan of "navy blue robes + purple cloak" as a color scheme, but it was requested.

Still, I'm very new to painting as a whole because color always scared me, but obviously I need to get better fast so I can keep selling art. So yeah, rip into it if you can, I need the help.

Symbol drawing is the term for what your brain does naturally, which is replace real things with simplified representations of them. It means instead of breaking down forms and shapes and trying to understand the subject, let's say for example a hand, into it's actual component parts and laying it out properly on your page with structure, contour, perspective, etc., you just draw a blob with some thin blobs coming off of it and call it good because your brain will read it as a hand even in it's hyper simplified state because our brains are designed to simplify things and see patterns, not to see detail.

It doesn't matter whether you're cartooning, doing anime, or doing hyper realistic portraits, the same underlying steps still apply.

Even anime artists need to learn this stuff in order to up their game.

Thoughts? I thing Everything is a bit too hard-edged everywhere, I might soften the background edges.

Also, I got a bunch of questions about how to make money with drawing, like what sort of content to draw to make the easiest money (I don't care what, I'm broke and need money asap). Are there specific threads about that stuff? Or should i just make a thread about it?

I pushed some rendering on the fine details and added some gradient maps to swap the saturated blue for a more muted navy and darken the values on the cloak and push the overall saturation because my tablet is apparently more saturated naturally than my monitors so the whole thing was looking a bit washed out.

But I really want to make the cloak better and get a more streamlined form for the figure overall, but I'm not sure if it works to cover a lot of the chest details. Also the left arm is looking a little weird, I may have to tweak that a little bit. I'm noticing that it feels very long and should probably have the middle bicep part raised up a bit.

Just the first thing I put into google, assuming it's a nighttime scene.

The thing I think that is most important to remember that there wouldn't really be such a hard terminator between light and dark in the case of strong light coming through a window like that. There might be a harder edge on the shadow on the floor, but there would still be a significantly large amount of bounce and ambient light in the room itself if the lightsource is bright enough to shine through the window like that. Especially because light spreads out and softens as it travels, so if the window is that high up and that far away as your picture implies, it would essentially be lighting the whole room rather than just that one tiny spot. Cast lights through windows aren't lasers.

>> No.4974574

>>4974567
I guess I should add, it CAN be an extremely strong terminator/contrast between the light and dark if you crank up the contrast to overexpose the light, or if the window is very small and there's no other possible source of ambient light in the room (which doesn't seem to be the case since you drew other windows) like in a prison cell or something.

>assuming it's a nighttime scene.
I actually didn't. I guess I just have no idea how light works anymore lol. This is the only reference I was able to find of what i was thinking of so far. I image the room to be poorly lit while having strong light come in from the outside and cover the upper half of his head in shadow while having the face lit. True enough that it shouldn't read as a fucking laser so i guess I'll have to change the lighting scheme a bit while somehow keeping the face shadow.

Well if it's a normal daytime thing then really nothing special has to happen lighting-wise? You put some long shadows behind the characters and you give them a fairly strong highlight on the planes of their body facing the brightest window, but the whole room is lit pretty ambiently so you won't have super dark shadows on the back faces like you would if the window was the sole light source.

Need a few tips from some anons.

I'm getting thourght Drawing on the right side of the brain and I'm having a lot of fun, I made my own Viewfinders and Picture plane, but I have a little trouble with them.

When I got to Negative spaces and the drawing of the chair aside from the stuff I can fix like my Viewfinders being too bendy, it's very hard for me to focus in the drawing, because I'm either following my pen (Regular whiteboard marker, couldn't get my hand on a felt tip for now) or focusing on the chair and loose track of my pencil.

I'm trying to find a middle ground for both of these, but as of now, this is my first wall with this book. Any tips from anons that have done this before?

To me personally I think your values are fine. I think what the problem here is that once you've started painting, you lose what the original sketch was underneath and the proportions become wonky and/or changed. You also seem to have a problem always keeping the perspective in mind for each body part. Here's a redline I did. There's a couple notes in the image too.

This is something I'm trying to work on between other projects. Same guy from >>4973065 though this was started before that. Also, delivered that commission, client super happy with the final result, but I still want to re-paint parts to fix a lot of issues.

Anyway, I'm trying to essentially learn by stealing from one of my favorite artists' style, but he paints with actual acrylics on top of pencil sketches, so I'm trying to recreate some of that digitally. I need to learn how to push the lighting more and experiment with brighter, punchier colors.

Also I'm not in love with the pose/composition here, but I'm finishing it anyway because I need finished paintings.

Its not 100%, but i tried to fix it under the assumption that the corner is symmetrical. Keep track of your vanishing points and check you construction with ellipses when you're unsure. Also don't jump into values before deciding on a light source, the lighting in this is all over the place.

Honestly, scrap the whole background and do a new composition. This one just looks weird - why are they in the tiniest corner when the room is (assumedly) so big? Why the focus on one corner? Why this unequal spacing of vanishing points? Try to think of what you want to communicate:
Power, the one guy winning, competence, might -> 1 point perspective
battle, movement, decision, change -> 2 p
one guy towering over the other, fear, empathy -> 3 p

/ic/ is a cesspool of contrarian and childish bullshit. People have this black and white view on art, with shitty board culture and memes conflicting with actually valid critique and teaching skills . For example, people have this idea that your skill in art is tied to "making it" when making it literally means just making money. Greg Land makes a shit ton of money, so hes made it, right? All critique and discussion can be simply shut off by a "I make money" and no one dares to challenge that. Everyone has this superior complex that they are a better person and because they spend 8 years drawing (with 6 years of that time being drawing cringy anime art on deviant art before even learning about fundies) you must not DARE post work that is flawed in any fundamental way. It's disgusting. And what do we get from this mess? Actual good artists, great artists, and even middle tier artists get their works ignore and absolute beginners and shitposters getting all the (You)s. And sure the beginners could use it but the issue is no one wants to put in effort into critique and analyzing a piece so they pick the easiest thing. So people get burned out because they think their art sucks or they keep making the same mistakes. It's pretty sad. It's also funny because /beg/ is probably the best general here because people actually give constructive critique, praise, and motivation. Every other general can be summarized as an image dump

I gave it a shot but take my paintover with a grain of salt, drawing fur is really out of my zone.
I see what you mean by kitschy. I think what makes the painting feel that way is how there's little variation in the shapes and direction of the brushstrokes -- everything is very uniform, to the point that looking at the piece feels redundant.

Imo it's normal to discard drawings fairly often, especially sketches. However you'll also find value in taking your work farther. I can see many areas in your piece that would definitely benefit from cleaner rendering and shapes (ex. the ear and the neck/clavicle are very rough). If you only ever stick to drawing rough portraits while omitting details, you're sort of depriving yourself of valuable practice.
As you practice carefully rendering forms then you'll eventually learn how to simplify them, if speed is your goal.
