Actually, the lines are full black.
They just look reddish due to the analog tape.
This makes it impossible for it to be upscaled legitimately and keep that cozy warm glow.

Is it?
The episode never has a frame with Santa's Little Helper with the bug eyes nor a frame of Homer's mouth open with only the top row of teeth.
Comic Mint is pretty shady, so I wouldn't put it past them to fake the cel.

Heratige Auctions has the exact same cel, exact same non-existent Santa's Little Helper expression, and has this in the description.
>Animation was this scene from the very first Simpson episode, "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire" (also called The Simpson's Christmas Special; airdate: 12/17/89) This 12 field cel features the entire Simpson family: Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, Maggie, Grandpa, Patty and Selma, and family dog, Santa's Little Helper. This one is #43 in an edition of 200. It has the Fox seal and original Fox Letter of Authenticity on the reverse. This small edition was an instant sell-out upon release 25 years ago, and they are very hard to find. Framed and in Fine condition.
So it's not the one used in the episode, but a copy made by FOX.

Looking at the image it seems like the actual outlines are mostly more black, while lines inside are a little closer to the surrounding color. Some of the thinner lines also blend to the color surrounding it.

It's probably a byproduct if being non-digital and shot with a camera, being paint on cel, etc.

Digital is soulless, but god damned if it isn't 1000x more convenient when it comes to color. When I color, I like to do lineart traditionally, scan it, and ink (if not already inked) and color on top the lineart instead of working on layers and hiding the paper and lineart completely.

>> No.4967483

>>4967474
That's because when you draw it's not 100% opaque traditionally. Then you just apply colour burn on top of the lineart to a colour that resembles it on upscaled lineart and it will pass a cursory examination.

>> No.4967489

>>4967474

So basically colour the lineart to a desaturated reddish brown (and spin the sliders until it looks right) and set the layer to colour burn. Unlike multiply it doesn't straight up darken colours, it will affect colours in the vicinity.

not one of you fuckers have got it right. it's called colour bleed and it's unique to vhs. a good way of replicating it is:
-duplicate the finished frame
-blur the top layer and reduce opacity
-fuck around with increasing the saturation / warmth of the top layer
-add noise to the image with a noise filter
-then downscale your image quite a lot, and blow it up again, you don't want clean lines, and this will blur the colours even more

that's not a warm glow. the cels are throwing a shadow on the BG.
the characters were painted on transparent cels and then superimposed over the BG art layer. because there's a physical gap between the layers, this sometimes could cause the upper to throw a shadow onto the lower one.
you can see the process here:
https://youtu.be/jPuTVjpuom8?t=590

you can see that effect in old anime shows and movies.
my guess to why the shadows appear reddish in the old simpsons show would be, the yellow skin colour is making the shadow reddish.

thanks
any idea as to what these light lines that loosely surround shadows and highlights are?
I'd say that the reason they're there is to provide the colorists a shape to fill in, but they look like a completely different type of paint from the actual color layer.

>> No.4970483

>>4970469
my guess is, that the colorists mark the shapes in on the front - you can see it overlapping the outlines. then turns the cel around and colours the rest of the charactes characters.
as to why the colours look different, it's probably because you see the same colour once from the front and from the back. the cel itself makes the colour from the back appear darker.
may I ask where you got that gunsmith image from? the quality is amazing.
