4961826 No.4961826 [Reply] [Original]

This is a thread to discuss all kinds of digital drawing hardware: non-display graphics tablets, pen display tablets, portable tablets and more.

>What should I buy?
State your:
>Budget
>Location
>Type (display? non-display? portable?)
>Size (in inches)
>Other information
>Previous equipment

If you have any additional questions, ask them.

>Recommended tablets:

Intuos Pro 2013 - Great value, and the nibs won't wear out in 5 seconds like they do on the newer model.
Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite - Budget portable display tablet. Very solid drawing experience with Wacom EMR tech.
Used iPad Pro 2nd Gen 12.9" - Best option for a display tablet.
Used Cintiq 22HD - The only worthwhile large display tablet
Galaxy Tab S7+ - Good premium alternative to an iPad Pro

>Avoid:

XP+Pen, Huion, Gaomon and every other Chinese brand - Poor build quality, lackluster pens, bad tilt, horrible customer support and the displays are not calibrated. All Chinese brands are basically the same because they're all centralized. Also watch out, Chinese Companies are known to shill aggressively, even on 4chan.
Cintiq Pro - Terrible value. The drawing experience might be good, but you're paying way too much for an unreliable product. Dead pixels are frequent, as are black screens of death.
Microsoft Surface Pro - The N-Trig digitizer means you will always get wobbly lines.
Lenovo - Bad drawing performance.

Lol yeah especially when something like that is posted without any prompting...

On another note: is a QHD tablet worth it? Does anyone feel that it matters for your process? Did using a larger resolution screen "feel better" than good ol' 1080p?

I'm thinking about getting a new screen tablet, and QHD vs FHD will be the big key for me

First of all, ignore the "Chang Guy". It's clearly mental illness.

Secondly, every little bit of resolution (and at least for screens a higher refresh rate) at least helps when your setup can handle it, which for drawing applications should almost always be the case. Keep in mind that you cannot simply downscale a from a higher resolution as pretty much every screen will use intetrpolation and make things blurry.

Would also like to chime in and ask if a 1080p (60hz) monitor is at least enough when you go screenless.

Fixing the copypaste Schizo OP

>What should I buy?
I got you covered senpai. Here is a sufficiently short (but spanning 2 posts out of necessity) breakdown of what you should buy or avoid. Feel free to ask further questions, but try to avoid the schizo OP.

>Drawing screen for desktop
Wacom devices simply rule as far as drawing goes. They are not just nominally the best from a technological standpoint, they simply "feel" the best. However, they do skimp out on screen quality unless you buy the really expensive options. Definitely don't buy a Wacom One. Ideally you want something with at least 100% sRGB coverage. More accuracy can be nice for certain uses, but is optional.
XP Pen is the most solid contender to Wacom and is fine as a budget alternative, but again, look at the screen quality and see how well the pen works and contemplate if you are fine with what you are buying.

>Screenless tablets
Screenless tablets may appear less intuitive than drawing screens, but they help with ergonomics as you do not need to bend over. As they contain the same pen technology as their visual counterparts, it's very much a flavor thing. But the Intuos / XP-Pen Deco lines are much cheaper than drawing screens, and of course a lot more robust.
Keep in mind, however, that the rough surface on newer Intuos models produce very strong nib wear. This is supposed to make them feel like paper, but many people dislike it. You can buy a smooth Intuos Pro sheet from Wacom for $30.

>Standalone Mobile Devices
The iPad Pro models (including iPad mini 2019) and, to a slightly lesser extent, the Galaxy S7/S7+ are the go-to tablets. Outside of simple drawings, however, these are very limited in their capabilities and doing any task is generally way more tedious.

>> No.4962214
File: 162 KB, 395x650, 1602674039805.jpg [View same] [iqdb] [saucenao] [google]
4962214

>>4962211
The 16:10 aspect ratio on the Galaxy Tabs also works against them, as especially the larger S7+ is not comfortable to hold in your hands. They are, however, all way too small to be considered proper drawing screens. 16 inch is usually the threshold for people.
Connecting tablets as a drawing screen through Windows Ink is also not very intuitive. For the iPad Pros, you are SOL as the one "decent" solution, Duet Display, not only charges a yearly fee, but will actually mess up graphics drivers on your PC. Absolutely do not recommend. For Android we have at least Super Display, which charges you once, but that one also won't work nearly as well as a dedicated drawing screen.

>Mobile Computing
Do avoid Windows convertibles / tablets at all cost. You can find a proper explanation as to why here:
>>4952481
>>4952518
As is explained in the linked posts above (which you can find later in the archive on warosu.org/ic), a proper (not thin) laptop + an Intuos / Intuos style screenless tablet are the way to go if you want to work with the same device in different places.

>In Summary
>What To Buy
Wacom Cintiq / Cintiq Pro line
XP-Pen Artist line
Wacom Intuos Pro line
XP-Pen Deco line
Proper Notebook together with a Screenless Tablet
(iPad Pro / mini 2019)
(Galaxy Tab S7/S7+)
((EMR-based Windows hybrids, DON'T BUY THEM, THIS IS JUST A HINT IF YOU WANT TO BE STUPID AND IGNORE MY WARNING!))

>What To Avoid
>Alternative screens besides XP-Pen (at least be careful and do your research)
>AES and (especially) N-Trig based pens
>Any "desktop" style mobile devices, really (Windows tablets, Chromebook, etc.) unless they are solid laptops
>Capacitive screens (shouldn't really be necessary to mention)
>The schizo (presumably OP) in these threads that keeps using the word "Chang"

This was written pretty quickly. One thing I did wrong was exclusively shilling Schenker. I love their notebooks but they only support most European countries.

Also, you can apparently, although I haven't tried to yet, very well use the rough or extra rough Intuos Pro surfaces if you do DIY tips with weedcutter lines (similar to Wacom nibs) and square toothpicks (like pencil). Should be about 1.8mm, but again, I haven't tried personally yet.

Also to note is that (EMR / Apple) tablets with mobile OS are very much a personal thing. I just don't want to use them and whenever I put one in my hands I would rather go back to my Windows machines with a dedicated drawing tablet. But some people with different dispositions towards technology prefer them (although they are plebians, and basically, learn to code).

Works but often you find recutting, sanding for a round tip and sometimes the variance of diameter isn't consistent plus I made it one at a time which in hindsight isn't a good idea.

Wound up buying a 100 pack of nibs off Alibaba which I believe would last the life the tablet.

DON'T BUY ANY BIG BRAND LAPTOP FOR FUCK'S SAKE! This makes me viscerally angry. You can pick the biggest most high performance Asus notebook you can find on the market and it's still gonna be an overpriced, overdesigned, overheating piece of disposable plasticware with a hardware arrangement that easily breaks and is way too expensive to repair. So basically, with modern laptops you can by a new one every 2 years while outright scrapping the old broken ones.
If you want good performance (if not, old IBM Thinkpad will do), just get one of the few remaining proper notebook brands (Eluktronics etc.) together with an Intuos if you really think you want a mobile drawing setup (you probably don't and will cope for the first month or so trying to use it, then not use it properly).

I have noticed that if I work with the canvas at 100% scale, I have much more control of my stroke. Why does this happen?

The problem is that to work at 100% scale, I have to do it on a 1150x1100px canvas. This resolution makes it very difficult to work with details, because after 100%, the pixels become visible.

Even if I had infinite money ordering nibs that are more brittle than their predecessors for $1 a piece + shipping is a ridiculous situation, just not gonna do it. Standard tension, didn't adjust it, it does wobble at the corners, and you can wobble it with a quick firm tap with your fingers in the corners, but with the large bevel and that you are drawing near the center, the corners are mostly avoidable

And also that I don't tap large pressures by quickly hitting the stylus down and releasing but by placing my stylus down and letting the pressure increase leads to it not wobbling for me. I can not move it putting pressure within my drawing area and even resting my hand on it an releasing when it's tilted horizontally the shift and return is less than 1/4 of an inch.

I also have a big heavy desk with metal a metal frame it's clamped on to so the desk wobble isn't transferred to the arm. I think the desk is the most important part.

Thank you friends. Based on what you said I think my desk might become a problem as it's a cheap Ikea one that flexes as soon as I put even a tiny bit of pressure on it but I think the benefits might outweigh the negatives in this case.
The Wacoom arm is hella expensive (approx 420eur) but I think it might be worth it anyway. Not like I'll need to replace it very often (if ever)

A screen protector can cause colors to look grainy and wear out nibs faster. Usually only people who want the extra texture uses it.

I suggest getting an anti-fouling gloves, helps keep your hands from sweating too much and sticking on your screen. Minimizes the oils that gets on it too. Wacom is too cheap to provide one.

Then there is the shortcut device. EK Remote, Celsys tabmate, a small wireless keyboard, or gamepad configured with joy2key or something, pick your poison.

2019 january. Another pro artist on cgpersia recommended testing for shite tablets by putting rulers on the surface and drawing over it in photoshop and seeing if the line is straight with a straight ruler or curved with a curved ruler. If you are buying from a physical store, the people there might let you test it or a display model before you take it home.

And I guess the reason why they're testing in photoshop is that it's SUPER fucking sensitive to bad tablets and will throw a fit over it. Partly missing lines, shoelacing, jagged angles lines, dotty/blobby lines are all a really bad sign whereas other programs are really good at masking it.

What's a group draw session? Do you livestream each other's drawing or just draw stuff and post it to something like a chatroom?

I would recommend the new Samsung Galaxy Tab S7+ because the display dimensions are pretty similar to A4, it's portable so you can draw outside and you can use it as a PC display tablet with superDisplay.
Would also recommend the iPad Pro; it's better to buy them off Ebay though.

If it was a screenful tablet I would probably lean towards Huion due to them using better displays with bonded etched glass, but for screenless it's hands down Xp-Pen. They are just more pleasant to the touch.

>> No.4978926

>>4978909
It's a ten dollar purchase for sure, but you can get pretty much anything you want on a computer for free, from industry software like zbrush/photoshop/maya to super meme niche freeware like Alchemy. Some things like CSP are perpetual on computers but for ipads you'll be paying the subscription forever. Plus the Apple ecosystem is just bad, you A) can't downgrade the iOS so you will inevitably face the day when iOS is too laggy to run (forced obsolescence) or B) face getting locked out of apps when Apple requires that the apps increase their required iOS. And whether or not you choose to update your iOS or not you will one day be unable to update your apps.

And when that happens, all apps with online integration will die. Dropbox, youtube, even Chrome and Discord no longer work on any iDevice I own (I've owned two ipads and one iphone and two ipod touches and all of them have faced the same fate that I have described). Wikipedia is full of "click here to view this fucking math formula". You might not think that your app has any online integration, but trust me when I say that you are living on the mercy of the developers. Say when you are trying to boot up an app and it fetches some kind of welcome message from the server when you load it. If the devs change the message or decide to no longer host the website, what happens next? Well most of the time they unfortunately do not give a shit about your ipad or iDevice on an old operating system as bugfixes are only pushed to the new ones and the recommended ios is higher than what you can upgrade to so you will just have one non working application for the rest of that iPads life. And there will be so many nonworking applications.

Also, iOS battery replacement is expensive. If you, for example, decide to get your device serviced at a non Apple authorised shop and bring that device to Apple, when the employee checks your device and finds a non approved component in it

>> No.4978930

>>4978909
(continued) Not only is your warrantee now considered invalid but Apple can and will deny your device from being serviced. The same goes for any modifications that they consider unauthorised such as jailbreaks, etc, so if someone is feeling like a real asshole on the day that you take your device in, for example, to get repaired or a battery replaced and you have anything that Apple doesn't approve of on it or if you have been using other repair services, you can be in some deep shit when it comes to getting your device fixed. You might not be able to get it fixed.

Now, in terms of the "well my device is basically bloated and unusable thanks to iOS upgrades that are specifically designed to cripple my iDevice into an expensive iBrick so that I am forced to purchase a new device in order to continue getting the upgrades to the apps that I have paid for and so that it isn't slow and horribly laggy" you might never encounter it if you keep purchasing a new iPad, etc, the instant your iPad feels sluggish. You might never encounter the need to purchase a new battery (protip, all of mine have sucked in that the instant it hits 500 charge cycles it goes into the shitter and the battery barely lasts any time at all so that they constantly always need to get charged).

You may never face the issue of dust being trapped behind the screen or dead pixels or colour inaccurate yellowed screens that comes as a result of the ipad/iphone overheating a bit too much.

But you could face those issues.

>> No.4978936

>>4978909
(continued)
And I am also uncertain, in terms of how good the support is for iPad to computer connection. Now, I know that for me, I would not be pleased at all to be forced only to use Apple apps, etc on my iPad. Maybe when my iPad can no longer update any of the apps etc or maybe those apps are working, I might be able to *at least* salvage something from the unusable iBrick by getting it to connect to the computer. Like a Cintiq, right?

Welllll the problem is that those sorts of screen mirroring technologies tend to be super archaic and also super laggy. So consider this, when you open up your art program on your computer and you go to make a brush stroke and it takes forever to appear. That's super unintuitive, right? Well I've never tried to use those programs at all.

But I have sure read of a bunch of people getting fucked over by trying to use their iPad to connect to their computer. Maybe it's simple lagginess or their ipad app just doesn't support pressure sensitivity in the application that they want to use it in. Or maybe the application such has switched to a subscription only model so that they only way you can connect your iPad to your computer is to keep paying money to this service and to hope this service won't one day suddenly die on your iPad. I've played games that have rescinded the "subscription features" the instant they decide they no longer support your device. So you have to do your research in this area, of whether not an iPad is, in any way shape or form, ultimately better than a cheap screenless tablet that might last you a decade if you're lucky or if it's on a 3 year borrowed lifespan like all of my iPads, iPod touches or my iPhone (which is currently also on its way out with a super yellow screen and which has already has its battery replaced once because that battery sucked so hard that the phone would switch itself off in cold weather with about 30% battery left to go).

>> No.4978937

yeah i despise everything about how apple operates which is why i hope it means something when i say that i've never been more productive on any other digital drawing interface, and that outweighs all else for me. its so much less of a ritual to just whip this thing out and start drawing. ive spent a couple years each with a surface and a mobilestudio pro, and none of them were as pleasing to work with. now yeah, i have a cintiq plugged into my pc for cg work, but if all you're doing is 2d illustration, like for fun or just starting out freelance, seriously just find someone who owns an ipad and try it out for a couple drawings. i had no interest until i actually put the overpriced pencil to digital paper and i just couldn't stop drawing. actually using this thing was the only way i was able to be convinced.

Nigga it’s ten dollars, plus for the amount that I use my iPad it’s no more expensive than a phone contract. I use it a lot more than most normal people use their phones. Like 90% of people use phones on contract, barely anyone buys them outright. Then when it’s time to upgrade you can still get like half your money back when you sell the old one. I’m not even a fan boy, I wish it would last forever but that’s just technology. I’d have to upgrade computer parts eventually too, a solid computer is a much bigger financial blow at once and it’s much heavier to carry around, you think I wanna sit on a train or in a cafe and whip out a laptop and a drawing tablet and set that shit up? My iPad is a sketchbook in my bag that has unlimited art supplies included. Stop raging at “the man” it’s really not that much money to own an iPad

just read this. i'll expand a little: if you're some big dick professional industry illustrator and cg artist and you've got the money to throw around on a high-ergonomic, comfortable workstation, fucking do it. maybe it'll treat you better. but frankly, ive done that myself and still don't have as much fun as i do when drawing on my ipad. my workstation is a purely 3d work area now because this thing does basically everything i need for illustration without having to deal windows' bloated bullshit.

>>4978937
Yeah, I mean if you're getting a super load of mileage out of using an iPad etc, it's going to be way better than purchasing something like a Cintiq and finding out that you hate it, it's not ergonomic at all and the Cintiq, well, it's just a cintiq, it has no actual tablet functions etc. At least with an iPad you could use it for reading or as a side entertainment device if you decide art isn't for you.

>>4978938
I've already owned my way through two iPads. They aren't very functional any more. Especially because the battery drains so freaking quickly. And with a computer, at least, I'm not going to find out that I literally cannot downgrade my device, if I one day manage to install an update that totally fucks it and that no matter where I bring my computer I can get it fixed. Desktop art applications also take a very long time to raise their requirements, whereas with iOS, let's just say Apple is a total shit when raising their required iOS levels. They do it on purpose, you see. I used to repackage the applications in the past and lo and behold, it actually works on the lower iOS. They just don't want you to use the lower iOSes, they want to force people to purchase a new one. And again, with the application issues, I don't see old laptops running into an issue where they can't actually update chrome or photoshop or SAI or CSP etc within a few years!

Maybe it's not so much of an issue if you have a drawing tablet and an iPad, but if it's just an iPad and you're relying on that application to keep producing art, well I'd be very wary of it.

>> No.4978950

>>4978938
And like I said, if you're constantly going to be purchasing a new iPad and getting rid of the old one, well you'll probably never run into the sort of issues you're describing. But well, if you were going for a normal tablet, even those of the cheap variety, you can kinda expect them to last a long time. A very long time. But I think for new people who come to purchase a tablet for art, they don't come in thinking that they are going to purchase a brand new iPad in three years when it's no longer supported, I think that they purchase it with the expectation that it's done and dusted.

That's why I find iPads and Apple as a whole to be very disingenuous. People who are new to it just don't know what will happen, until it happens to them. Or it doesn't because they are a good little consumer and buy yet another one, which is again on a time limit.

You've probably got a few more years on it if you update, at the cost of increased RAM being used by the iOS, of course. But you never really know. It just depends on whether your app is coded in such a way that means that it doesn't rely on the server of the application developer and the application developer coded it in such a way that it's tolerant to changes in it. Some applications, for example Spotify, literally never change their server. You'd think that as a web based app it will just stop working. But no, it just keeps working. Dropbox, Discord etc, just freaking died.

Apple was especially nasty when these things hit the market. It seemed that every new application would require more RAM and if you hadn't it would just crash. The biggest concern when updating is that it will run more processes in the background and thus use up more RAM and usually those things are just un-disableable crapware. But there's a tonne of RAM on iPads now. I think that even if they bloat the absolute shit out if it, it's really difficult for Apple to make the devices horrible.

Probably the biggest thing is not being able to update the apps. If you get lucky with the app itself working fine and it already works fine offline, for example, and you don't rely on cloud sync to get things done and use a USB cable etc and it's not showing signs of overheating, etc, things will probably work out well. But screens and batteries are a bit of a gamble, always. And it's natural that batteries die after ~500 charge cycles.

I don’t know man this is my second iPad Pro, I had one for years and then when the contract finished I got the new one as an upgrade. My battery has always lasted all day. For me 2-3 years is a long time considering the amount that I use it. Apples strength is it’s user base, it’s so massive there’s so many options, many apps many brushes, the pencil is godly, I barely have any problems, bugs, or issues at all. It works, I can airdrop shit back and forth to my Mac fast and reliably, if I had a newer Mac I’d be able to use it as a second screen/screen tablet. I’d buy one too if I felt like I’d use it more but the iPad is fine on its own. Plus on top of that I can easily use it to replace literal thousands worth of music hardware I used to have, and I can save books on it and browse the internet and store notes and shit across all my devices, the ecosystem works and it is high quality. You just have to pay to be a player. I know you can do everything with alternatives but I like iOS and Mac OS. Everything just works and that makes me productive. Not trying to sell you on it though, personal preferences, but there are a lot of reasons to choose iPad imo if you stop being mad at the system

Well it's a good sign, if it's not taking up too much RAM and your battery is really good. Also Apple starts throttling the devices when the batteries get worn. It was the reason why they gave out wayyyy cheaper battery replacements for iphones and the like recently. If they maintain the price, it won't be so bad even if their anti-consumer repairs policy sucks. I think it my country it's actually illegal for them to deny repairs if you go with someone else, but if you are going for a third party repair service, it's a good idea to read up on your rights.

regardless of how good you think my work is, the point im trying to make is that an ipad is going to be the easiest and most convenient digital drawing implement you can buy right now. like i said above, if you'd rather hole up in an office with a $6000 workstation to fund your freelance or wfh operation, by all means. but if you're like most digital artists who either do it as a hobby or to make some side cash, just get a used ipad. its cheap and comfortable to use. at no point did i claim that it will be perfect for everyone, but i fully believe it will be perfect for most people.

I've been using a Huion GT-191 since I got it last Black Friday and while there have been hiccups in my experience here and there, it's a very good tablet if you want a large screen tablet to use at a desk, but don't want to shell out the cash for a Wacom. It's over a year old at this point and I haven't even had to change the nibs despite it coming with at least 10 replacements, and it even came with an extra pen. Genuinely not a shill, I've just had a mostly pleasant experience overall, though I have had a weird problem that when I try to open sai using my tablet pen, it doesn't open and I have to use my mouse instead. That might be a Chinese tablet thing since I had that problem with XP Pen, but throughout my years of using my $50 Monoprice tablet (which I would absolutely recommend if you're on a budget but need something quality. It feels like drawing on sandpaper, but despite the price, it lasted me 2 years before it started to die) it never did that.

Deco Pro Medium (using simple paper as a "sheet", because it's awesome) is a pretty solid choice at this price range, especially if you don't want additional excruciating nib costs. But keep in mind that the digitizer sometimes won't work on startup and you will have to look for the cause. In fact, I was going to prove >>4980516
wrong, but Photoshop doesn't work right now for whatever reason. She should be a bit familiar with PCs to the extent that she can easily set up WinTab for whatever graphics program she uses, but that is usually fairly straightforward. All of this also goes for Wacom, sadly.

If you want a screen tablet, then you have to go much deeper into your pockets. Keep in mind that Wacom in particular skimp out on screen quality on lower end devices, and the $300 Wacom One, being the bottom of the barrel, has a pretty abysmal screen. Not that you can't draw on something like that, but it sure will be intrusive.

Standalone tablets (Apple, Samsung) are usually even more expensive and come with a lot of drawbacks, like limited functions and controls. Once you see how powerful Photoshop's brush settings are, it's hard to go back.

So, Deco Pro, or a cheap Wacom Intuos are my recommendation.
Will repost this in the new thread for visibility.

I, a certified professional anonymous internet user, am here to help you.
Clip Studio or Krita are fine really, but I find Krita's brush panel to be a bit too complicated for consistent use. Haven't done anything with Clip Studio other than a cursory look. Don't think it has a dedicated mapping section for pressure / tilt, which is I admit is rather niche when you don't want to spend quite some time preparing your brushes for different tasks. It's trying to be more on the "intuitive" side.

You could also get away with Sketchbook for a very basic software, but basically you get the barebones approach of Apple Procreate without the tight integration advantages that some people like about Apple, so it's not that great really. I would call it "Advanced Paint".
