Why You Should Copy Anime:
https://i.imgur.com/zNDsyF0
https://youtu.be/t_IODIIYAe0

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

>Copy anime references exactly

The single most retarded thing I have read on this board. Color theory has nothing to do with drawing figures properly. Dont post your shitty faggot-kun on discord to get told by the kid who just hot glued his hatsune-miku panties how cool your doodle is. Study actual faces and figures. Anime is the simplification of proportion. You learn nothing about proper proportion from studying anime. Practice doesn't make perfect. You need perfect practice, so learn how to do actual art. Study realism, then draw your chink faced abominations.

Anyways I’m sure you’ll get there lecturing people about fundamentals instead of studying them like im doing right now.

I used .1 micron pen and markers.

How do you apply those measurements if you are to do them? To me it seems like a waste of time to actually think about it mathematically because no two people will have the same measurements so it seems to make more sense to just draw the figure so many times you get a feel for how long x should look from y perspective.

Also it seems to me that it would distract from the gesture anyway to measure it out like that when the goal is to create the illusion of depth so it will never be totally 100% accurate anyway.

For example when I study perspective I’ll spend maybe an hour actually measuring cubes out on a grid/vp, but I’ll spend the remaining hours of a practice session drawing the same cube from the same angle 50 or so times free hand and repeating that until I my brain starts to give up.

I’m a very analytical person so I’m worried about learning something incorrectly to the point it freezes me up. I’m wondering if it is simply a matter of mileage to find a way to balance intuitive and analytical study.

Basic measurements are more about where lines should be placed in relation to how long you want something. If there is a mathematical way of measuring proportion, I'm not aware of it. Other than that, it depends on perspective. You are going to have an easier time with proportion on simple perspectives like full bodies and profiles. 2nd and 3rd point perspective will be out of proportion depending on where the angle of view is.

>> No.4954421

I agree, but realism applies to more than just drawing things more realistic.
IMO you could keep going with realism and get into hyper realism, but there isn't anywhere to go beyond that. Its something not a lot of people can do, and even fewer can make it more than just a side job.
Realism can apply to any medium, whereas manga applies to one style.

Hirotaka is one of the more famous porn artists in Japan, but when I look at his stuff with a critical eye, I notice a few common mistakes, like weird proportions or arms/legs going in strange directions. Had students who liked sketching and drawing so much but gave them a 4 week period to create a finished illustration and they panic hard and pretty much broke down and cried.

They realized that their finished pieces aren't as good as their studies as it also highlighted the flaws it had originally.

not sure i agree. i'm not sure what exactly you're even talking about.
from what i can see meguca looks fine, only the eyelashes are applied badly. but you make it sound like a more fundamental problem, which i don't see.

Well, thank god, I'll answer you then.

plsc.jpg has the eyes more "Japanese", more "anime" like.
>eyelashes applied badly
yeah, so those typical anime eyes are so unique to Eastern illustrations that they're "symbols of the style" so to speak. So that's what I'm saying he does not understand how to correctly draw the eye "symbols". He does not understand how to correctly draw "typical anime eyes".

I'm *not* talking "symbol drawing" which refers to something else.
He just doesn't know how to draw anime eyes, that's all that I'm saying. I don't know why anyone would dispute this as you're proof that he doesn't know how to draw them.

He should reference anime eyes and maybe grind them a bit daily.

>> No.4957469

Actually there are western people who can draw convincing anime, you just are looking hard enough.
The reason why "western anime" can be easy to spot is usually a lack of understanding of what makes anime look like anime, which is a lot easier for people who grew up surrounded by that kind of media.

>> No.4957513

..that doesn't actually say anything. i don't see how meguca is any less anime or japanese.

it sounds like you only consider a certain style "correct" but the way i see it, meguca is going for a different and maybe more generic aesthetic, even if the execution is super plain. so i don't see anything wrong with it.

the only thing that matters is that they read well, and meguca actually reads better than plsc imo. even if meguca is simple and borderline symbol drawing.

jeez wtf am I so autistic that I can't explain this to you? Or is it that you're at fault for not comprehending.

I think he's trying to draw that pink girl from Magica Madoka or whatever. He does not understand the ratios and curves of that particular characters eye. It looks off.

give >>4957469 a read.

Those eyes aren't "correct" or "optimal", they're plain and simple a bit wrong. Why do people keep disputing this. I'm thinking you're the artist defending yourself.
But of course I can't prove that, it's pointless.

Go on with your day and don't annoy me with this matter anymore. There are grey areas in drawing, art and animation and stuff, and technically speaking everything regarding this is purely subjective, but that's not how all of this works. >Well, I can see it isn't drawn by someone who knows how to draw anime/manga.
which is basically the same as saying
>it looks wrong because it looks wrong to me
in that case, again, are you saying the other guy knows how to draw anime/manga? because in my eyes they're both just trying.
honestly i should be the one to stop replying because almost everything i'm reading from you is complete nonesense.

>>4957844
first off: i would normally not use words like incorrect or inoptimal when it comes to just drawing anime. those should be reserved for more technical aspects like anatomy or perspective. i only used them since that other guy did.

As for critique, there isn't much to be said other than study a lot more. not only the shape of the head but also how everything connects together.
>those middle 3 heads
don't allign the eyes on a curved surface like that. yes, people draw a spheres and such to simplify the head, but the face does not actually lie on such a curved surface.
and that profile is quite bad, work on that a lot more.
i think the bottom and the top row are okay, but there are small alignment issues here and there which end up being crucial.
the mouth is often placed without regard for the rest of the features.
but then again a lot of these can be stylistic choices if you want them to be.

>I really want to master anime heads.
this is impossible to achieve unless you understand the structure of every part and how they fit together.
study real human heads at least a little bit, that might help you gain a deeper understanding for the structure of heads in general.

Done this for the Weekend waifu drawing thread over /a/. I didn't knew the character, it's suposed to be "Natsume". Tho the thread was archived before i could submit.
Anyway, im way more confortable at doing sloppy sketches and rendering it in greyscale.
Later on i will try to color using some glazing techiniques. It turned to be surprisingly fast to draw this way. It took me around an hour or so.

Here's your free correction by the way :
英語くせに is not correct here. くせに should denote what the subject or person is. Also you would need の appended to the noun for it to work at all to begin (nounのくせに).
"If you got a problem, despite in English don't say."
See? It's wrong.
A simple で would have suffice to convey "in English".
On top of this, having it repeat alongside なら makes it sound incredibly more unnatural.

And the face isn't appeal first then perspective.
Westerns tend to restrict themselves with too many rules for proportions and placement, while nips draw it for the sake of looking good and appealing.

A really good porn parody idea, if it hasn't been done yet, is to do "Kinky Delivery Service." Just get jailbait cunny (legal) to dress up as Kiki, and then the plot is pretty self-explanatory as to what kind of deliveries she makes.

On topic though, decided to redraw this really amazing kiki fanart with the groceries. She was missing dope shoes, so I threw some on her, super cool rite? Lemme know what you guys think, and does anyone know how to get that watercolor style look digitally? Idk if the orig is trad or not.

I figured the original is digital with the way the light hitting her dress is cut so clean from the watercolor. So the way to do watercolor in photoshop is just color like you normally do and then adjust your color layer following this method: https://blog.spoongraphics.co.uk/tutorials/create-watercolor-painting-effect-photoshop

You should try coloring over your lines, it would look nice. Try slowly rendering them out.

Cleaned and colored lines plus a few details. I don't think you meant render the lines out completely. It's diminishing returns at this point, so gonna call it.

Yep, it looks better with them colored. Though since you're going for the watercolor style, you cant really render over the lines, i get it.

It's not such an extreme angle that the left leg needs to be that big. The way you have her hips and thighs facing, her knees should point in that same direction. Cute Moona though.
