Make a schedule for yourself. Draw during x time and submit by x time. It's just about staying accountable to yourself. If you forget just set an alarm on your phone an hour before rollover or something.

If you look at the lineart the structure and the shading is all there and clearly marked, it's just that he seems to be afraid of pushing the values. Like I said, I think his main weakness is refs and method of study. Not everyone can be the person who can just draw everything and anything off the top of one's head. If you can copy anything from refs at a minimum then all you NEED is a ref. And copying imaginary anthro reptiles isn't really any different from copying taps or hands, as long as you invest a lot of time in copying things and making sure that it's as accurate as it can possibly get. Repeat for a while and there's consistency.

If his drawings with refs are fine but other drawings are off, I think the answer is quite simple.

It looks like he is only using one graded pencil for this one. You can have seven pencils to represent each of the 10 parts of the value scale and see if that helps.
Ex 0 and 1 value scales can be represented by 6B pencil.
2 and 3 can be represented by 4B.
4, 5, 6 can be 2B, HB, 2H.
7 and 8 can be represented by 4H.
9 can be 6H.
10 is a Chinese white or white pencil. Or you can use a kneaded eraser.

The easiest way is just learning how to vary your pencil pressure, or build up your shadows. You can use a very dark pencil like a 6B for very dark areas.

I finished the DAB challenge. My motivation for participating was that I was a flawless at the time and it was framed as the challenge to separate the boys from the men, so to speak. My perspective also needed work and I had a vague interest in completing DAB prior to the challenge but had never done it.

The pace was hard to keep, it really burned me out. I spent most of my free time working on DAB. I was doing around a set of the homework a day and then chipping away at the challenges on the side. You can see the quality drop toward the end of the challenge where I started focussing on volume as opposed to quality to keep pace to complete the course with the challenge (IIRC there was some controversy about if your badge was legit if you didn't finish DAB in the month).

The whole course is very grindy and an unpleasant way to learn. I got the impression finer details were skipped over because Uncomfortable didn't know or wasn't comfortable explaining. It is both a watered down version of better courses and a strict and soul-sucking regimen of exercises at the same time.

I do believe that it is valuable as an introduction to these concepts for a beginner that struggles with the typically recommended resources because it moves at a much slower pace. It puts a lot of work in to forcing you to study by being clear on how you're supposed to digest the information and making ugly art. I think its major pro is probably that it teaches you how to study material if you've never done it before.

Did I improve? I don't really think so. Was my goal to improve? I don't think so either desu, I have no intentions of becoming a professional artist in any way so I was in it 100% because I'm a competitive dickhead and had nothing better to do.

I'm Femmipoo if you want to look to see for yourself but I don't think I'm a good example because

Honestly DAB is a good resource if you're an absolute beginner and need strong guidance, otherwise I'd probably just recommend MDJ's perspective videos, Dynamic Sketching, and practice. To get the most out of DAB I'd suggest spreading each 'homework' out and drawing your own stuff in between. If it's too easy/grindy skip some or trying something else.

In terms of lessons:
1: Some good general exercises in there, the bulk of the perspective grinding is in this part
2: far more interesting, probably the peak and what most people will learn the most from
3,4,5: probably the best in terms of applying the content. If you're reasonably confident in perspective I'd skip straight here to test it
6,7: didn't do them, no commentary
250 boxes: Incredibly boring but necessary if you're new to the concepts before moving on to part 2 etc.
25 textures: Great challenge, I think a lot of people (myself included) could benefit from taking the time to work on textures.
250 Cylinders: Better than boxes, if you had to pick one of the two, do this one.
100 treasure chests: a lot of work and goes on for too long but pretty beneficial
25 wheels: I think this is new, I haven't done it and have no comments
