4931429 No.4931429 [Reply] [Original]

This is a thread to discuss all kinds of digital drawing hardware: non-display graphics tablets, pen display tablets, portable tablets and more.

>What should I buy?
State your:
>Budget
>Location
>Type (display? non-display? portable?)
>Size (in inches)
>Other information
>Previous equipment

If you have any additional questions, ask them.

>Recommended tablets:

Intuos Pro 2013 - Great value, and the nibs won't wear out in 5 seconds like they do on the newer model.
Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite - Budget portable display tablet. Very solid drawing experience with Wacom EMR tech.
Used iPad Pro 2nd Gen 12.9" - Best option for a display tablet.
Used Cintiq 22HD - The only worthwhile large display tablet
Wait for the Galaxy Tab S7+

>Avoid:

Cintiq Pro - Terrible value. The drawing experience might be good, but you're paying way too much for an unreliable product. Dead pixels are frequent, as are black screens of death.
Microsoft Surface Pro - The N-Trig digitizer means you will always get wobbly lines.
Huion, XP-Pen, Gaomon and every other Chinese brand - Poor build quality, lackluster pens, bad tilt, horrible customer support and the displays are not calibrated. All Chinese brands are basically the same because they're all centralized. Also watch out, Chinese Companies are known to shill aggressively, even on 4chan.
Lenovo - Bad drawing performance.

reposting this from the last thread

Never owned a tablet, was gonna get the huion kamvas 13 but you guys seem to not trust that brand. So:
>what should i buy?

>up to 400$ preferably but I can save up more if i need to
>United States
>Display
>Not looking for a particular size.
>i tend to rotate my paper as i sketch, id like to be able to rotate the tablet as well, like i said ive never had one so im not sure what to expect

I'm finally in the market for a new tablet. Currently using my Bamboo Splash that I got in fucking 2014. See, I bought a small Intuos back in 2017, but using it made me want to jump into traffic. It would have severe connectivity issues to the point where it was unusable. Every other time I would turn my computer on the drivers would corrupt themselves and I would have to reinstall them, otherwise it wouldn't work at all. Someone recommended that I buy the Wacom wireless accessory kit since that would fix it, but by then I went back to my old Splash.

Do Intuos models still suffer from this issue? And damn, so MS Sufaces aren't a good idea? I was hoping to replace my current laptop with one and just have the whole deal in one package.

My XP-Pen Artist 12 Pro keeps displaying the "No Signal/Power Saving" message when I turn it on, yet touch functionality remains even when the power is off. No displays worth drawing on are very portable and they need to be hooked up to your computer.

1 computer it worked flawlessly, the other it had issues, huion was fast to tell me what to do, and it ultimately came down to the chinese drivers were more recent, get them and it worked. later re installed windows and it worked on the us drivers.

of any chinese company, I would go huion due to support, at least email, is very fast with helping.

Personally, Its cheaper then wacom by well over 200, maybe 300$ for the same size, and since wacom shit the bed in branding and any cheap wacom option is so bad they dance the branding around every few years, what are you going to lose with huion from amazon? at worst, you pack it up and send it back, gg, it didn't work out.
for me I needed a penable display because I cant get over how digital arthas me looking somewhere else at a different scale, 10+ years of owning tablets and I just cant fucking do it, in this reguard, wacom can suck my fucking dick, no 'quality is better here' can make up for wacom display tables being shit you put up with, where people had 5+ year old issues and had to make their own drivers to solve it, and how poorly all display tables are in general, i'm not paying out the ass for wacom when the only thing it has going for it at that point is a higher quality display, fuck that, ill get a second monitor that is professionally calibrated if I need it that bad.

I suggest using 0.65 diameter weed trimmer for nibs, and consider cutting out plexiglass or those plastic binders for papers; cut it out and tape it on the tablet.

I use this on a xp pen deco pro and Intuos 3, it's a very smooth surface though it can feel "slippery" for some, but you get used to it. nibs last god damn forever, and it's always smooth. with the weed trimmer trick, you basically have a lifetime supply of nibs lol.

I’ll be traveling abroad to work for a year. I’m thinking of buying the new iPhone (6.1 screen), with a third-party stylus and use it for digital art. I can’t have anything else other than a phone with me.
I also thought about using some tricks like sketching on a physical paper, and scan or photograph the work, to digitize or vectorize it, and then paint/color it with an app like Procreate.

Well, by not allowing to sideload apps or being designed around an open file system.

I also got 2 major reasons.

1. iOS developers sure know their audience are willing to pay extra. And even if you were to jailbreak and sideload apps, there's not that many cracks floating around and a lot of these apps have subscription services and are hard to impossible to crack anyway.

2. I want to use this as a second Windows monitor, mostly over WiFi. If I were to go Apple, the one app that people say works reasonably well (Duet Display) not only charges a yearly fee to access pen features, but you get plenty of user reports saying the installation totally messes up Windows graphics drivers. So, basically, I can forget about it.
A Samsung tablet has at least Virtual Tablet to go with, which to my knowledge, doesn't mess up drivers, and only has a reasonable one time price.

Color quality/accuracy is a meme. There's no reason to have above average color, since 99% of your audience will have a similar or worse display. Unless you are a photographer or an industry pro (meaning you wouldn't be here, you'd just have a cintiq), you don't need it.
Furthermore, convertibles have one thing that no other drawing display has: single digit ms response times. Even the highest end cintiq has a huge response time. As a solo gamedev, I couldn't imagine using one of my dedicated tablets for 3D.
There are so many displays with active digitizers on the market today that it's hard to make broad claims about them. Lenovo, for instance, has 4K OLED drawing displays that use Wacom tech, something you won't find elsewhere. Surface Pros aren't as shit aside from the price, and some pens make them okay. HP has both ZBook and Envy. Dell, Acer, Asus, LG, Samsung, all of them make screens with styluses these days. You won't even find a list of them, they're everywhere. This isn't 2015.
As with anything, it depends on your use case. /ic/ mainly uses drawing tablets to replace traditional media, so the advice here leans a particular way. But recognize that there is a time and place for convertibles.

Colour accuracy isnt a meme and you even established that in your own post. Ive returned many a tablet because I cant fucking stand having to drag by picture to my main display to see what colours im actually putting down rather than what I think Im putting down. Huge issue. So no, I dont agree that its a "meme". But thats ok, because displays are only going to get better, and cheaper options than cintiques are coming out with excellent contrast ratio and gamut coverage.

>> No.4945138

>>4945103
Color accuracy around 85%-95% is alright but you need to absolutely make sure the contrast ratio is good. Anything under 1000:1 is utter trash and it doesnt matter if it has 99% adobesrgb because the contrast is 800:1, when contrast is wrong, all your pretty colors are wrong too.

Im surprised nobody really considers the contrast ratio when theyre talking about displays here.

>> No.4945151

>>4945103
>>4945138
Again, it depends on what you're drawing and who you're drawing it for.
I do most of my work on an X220t (like, 70% srgb), and I have never cared that the colors aren't exactly what I thought they were. It isn't something I even think about be because it isn't something I need. Because your client/audience also won't have a 120% adobe srg coverage. Hell, a good fraction of your audience will be literally colorblind. It's like, 10% of the population is literally colorblind, and much more than that are awful at discriminating color.
It's a very niche thing for almost everyone here. People invest too much time worrying about accurate colors, but only a single digit fraction of your audience will have a good enough monitor and good enough eyes to notice.
For someone who primarily draws to learn, like most folks around here, it's totally moot.
If you need it, you'll already know you need it and will have already found a solution long ago. If you don't know you need it, you don't need it.
Or in short, "if you have to ask, you don't need it"

>> No.4945173

>>4945151
I understand your point, but its even important for beginners as well. If your display has a shitty contrast ratio, your value judgement will be thrown off drastically in your studies since therell be such a huge discrepancy between your displays. I believe that as an artist its best to have as much control over what youre doing as absolutely possible given the medium, so vivid colours and pitch blacks are a must for me.

Holy hell, this is the kind of person that writes paragraphs on here.

Working accurately with the right gamut is important, kids. For print, for example, you can target DCI-P3. For games and desktop applications making things look good on a monitor that is a little bit more vibrant than sRGB, which is what most desktop monitors will be going for, is a good target.

Stop pretending like you work for Pixar. There are very few use cases that require an above average color gamut. Unless you are printing your work out, there's no reason to care.
Most people have absolutely garbage monitors, on par or worse than even the worst display drawing tablets. Not only won't they care about the difference, their monitors won't even depict it.
Color autism is nothing but FUD and marketing. It isn't something you actually need for general use.
Who are you making art for that you need that many colors? If you don't have an answer, then you are making it for nobody. It's fucking autism.
Color gamut is a lot like underwear- it doesn't matter what it looks like when 99% of the world won't see it.
You only need just enough to match the unwashed masses. Any more has zero return for 99% of cases. It's the same shit as people who insist on having 8192 pressure level when fucking 512 is more than enough. It's FUD and it's autism and it doesn't fucking matter.

That changes once you start getting paid. If you can't afford it, all that means is you need to keep working until you can afford that tablet you really want.

do what feels good for you. everyone's setup is different.

fyi based on your screenshots, you only have the 'functions' tool is setup for each app (photoshop/illustrator/indesign). you need to add photoshop/illustrator/indesign again for the 'touch' and 'grip pen' tools as well (we all make that mistake our first time). You add applications by 1) clicking on the tool (ei 'touch') and then add the application by clicking the plus sign in the Application section.

>"I can use it as a second display when i'm not drawing"
I thought the same and I haven't done it yet six months later. Multi-monitor setups can be annoying btw. You're sitting there with your main monitor turned on and secondary turned off. You open a program and it pops up on the screen that's off. You didn't necessarily move it there before, maybe it just goes there randomly because fuck you. You open up a full screen game and it wants to run on a screen you don't want it on. Maybe you're lucky and there's an option in the game's menu to switch screens. Maybe not, but the hotkey works to force it to change screens. Or maybe you have to fuck around in your display settings to get it on the right screen and then fuck around again after you're done playing to put things back to how they were. You open a menu in a program on your drawing tablet and the window pops up on your other monitor where you stylus can't reach. There's just all these little things that suck.

I mean, both Wacom and the other brands are going to be made in China. But there's always two tiers of stuff you buy there, the cheap stuff and the stuff which the peepa actually use. You get what you pay for and nowhere is it more true than in China. Except maybe with cintiqs and all those other screen tablets because let's just say I've seen more artists have to get them and have problems - more than I can count. And also RE apple, you can literally see them have worse specs than the competitors and those things need jailbreaks. So, I don't like them.

Now I don't know with regards to tablets which one is which. Maybe they're all made in the same factory. The importance of tilt depends on the brushes and program used.

In any case, if you're going to be buying a medium and have a tiny budget the obvious answer will be Huion and other brands but I think that since literally everything else can be torrented you might as well spend a lot of time deciding what tablet you'll buy. I used to easily spend that much on traditional. Nowadays, a tablet is a one time purchase and a good one will last at least half a decade if not more. And that means observing what tablets the artists you admire use, especially because the reviewers can't draw.

Actually it's a 2013. I specifically waited for one to pop up on craigslist because of the nib issue duly noted in this thread. Good luck with being a fag.

Yo thanks a ton this is super helpful to reference.

If I'm literally just getting started learning to draw, is there a tablet to recommend? I know the answer is probably just to start eith pen and paper, but I have a professional background in photoshop and would feel more comfortable learning with layers

Depending on your budget a simple screen less like an Intuos or Deco series tablet should be fine.

I was considering screenless, is there any difficulty learning to use one? I imagined it would feel weird drawing without looking at where the pen is, but maybe i'm wrong

I have the iPad Air 3 and kind of want an upgrade to the 12.9 pro. Think the extra screen space, ram and refresh rate is worth it? Don’t think I ever saw 120 FPS before

There’s a small learning curve of hand eye coordination that most people adjust to after a few hours or a few drawing sessions.

Alternatively some find their hand blocks their view on display tablets.

>> No.4951831

>>4951819
There is an adjustment.

Since you have a professional background in photoshop it should come easier with you.

People focus on looking at the nib thinking that is the thing that paints, you should be more easily disposed to look at the cursor as the spot the paint actually comes out of. You don't look at your mouse when you move it around the screen do you?

I never understood this. Does your hand not block your view when drawing on paper? Do those same people have difficulty writing things in pen instead of typing them out because "their hand is in the way"?

It's common for everyone except the most recent generation of digital artists. Up until recently, having a screen tablet as a first step wasn't really possible for most people. Everyone started with a regular tablet. The transition from screen-less to screen leads to the issue of having to work around your hand again after so many years. And yeah it is a weird phenomenon, there's no issue with drawing analog it just happens when working digital. You ipad kids don't know how easy you have it.

I have an Intuos Pro Medium and I want something as similar to it (but display version) and trusty as possible. Have had no need to change pins or replace anything in over 5 years.
Or is this not even possible for a display with this budget?

How long will an old Wacom Intuos 3 be viable? I have a small 4x6 one I bought years ago and have been considering grabbing a giant one off ebay since they're fairly cheap (especially missing the stylus), but I'm worried support may be entirely dropped or something.

Also is there any hope of linux supporting shit better? When I first bought this and was using photoshop and painter all the rotation and tilt stuff worked great, but with Krita on linux it feels much less maneuverable. Like if I'm using a square brush I need to be able to rotate it to get clean edges and shit, like with a real paint brush.

To get something of similar size you'd need a slightly bigger budget to get a 3rd party tablet like a Huion. At this point you might as well save up another couple hundred and get a Cintiq 16.

requesting help.
i'm new to drawing. looking for something preferably under $200. I don't need one of those tablets with a screen.
im not sure what is normally recommended for beginners but i'd prefer something at least medium-sized. also, I'd prefer buying it new, but if you guys think it's worth getting a used one then i'll trust you. other than that, i dont really care about any specifics. as long as my fellow 4channers recommend it to me, i'm sure I will buy the best one :)
I was looking at the XP-PEN Deco Pro because I read good things about it but I see the OP warns against it. If not that, then what should I get?

The Deco pro is a good tablet. I used one for a few years. Screenless tablets are all very good nowadays, you have a very broad range of choices for far less money than youd have needed to pay 10 years ago.

Lamy has a (presumably comprehensive) list of EMR devices. Do not buy AES. N-Trig is a bad joke and should not be used by anyone ever.
https://www.lamy.com/en/emr/

Some of Fujitsu's rugged dockables have EMR, the latest being the Q737. However, they are only 13.3 inches and neither the hardware nor the keyboard are anything to write home about. Screen colors are just about serviceable. They also only sell to businesses, no retail.

I would, however, strongly advice AGAINST BUYING ANY 2-IN-1 DEVICE AT ALL. Get a full-fledged, robust and repairable laptop instead (you should have one anyway), and throw in an Intuos.
Ask yourself: What are you going to use this for? Are you just casually going to pull out your desktop-style device and doodle on it in your hands? Yes, screenless displays may seem outdated to some, but they are still better to draw with than any ultra-thin and yet clunky convertible would be. You are probably itching to buy yourselves new toys, but with such finnicky and fragile hardware it is best to stick to the well-working basics.

As for what laptop you should generally get: A thick one. If Thinkpads are too archaic for you, there's a couple of lesser known companies with decent setups. Schenker/XMG, for instance, allow you to open the case in their warranty conditions, as far as I recall. Might have changed, don't think so. You can also go much cheaper, of course.

>> No.4952518

>>4952481
Just to put this into perspective: A laptop + Intuos combo
-is most reasonably priced
-is the least likely to break
-has the best possible mobile performance
-is the smoothest possible mobile drawing setup
And a proper laptop should be the first choice for a general companion / non-stationary work device anyway

Convertibles, on the other hand have
-screen
Which isn't even necessarily a plus, the way you have to bend over. More like a different positioning.
