That's what happens when you don't study the fundamentals.

I know artists who have been drawing 6-8 years and are stagnating/getting worse just because they don't bother focusing on learning how to describe form. The fundamentals of corners, cross-contours, gesture, observation... they ignore it and try to learn anatomy, rendering, color theory, etc.

There's definite theory to drawing! You can't just draw and expect to improve, anymore than you can expect to improve your writing just by writing. What happens to all those novelists who write 10, 20 novels and never get published? What happens to all those musicians who play music every day and never make it? They all don't study the fundamentals. They all think they're "above" the basics.

This person is doing no construction at all. Learning basic construction and 10-20 hours of figure drawing and you will be better than them. Probably less than that. You can... But studying fundamentals serves as a mirror. I'm sure we've all experienced how our eyes/observation grew much faster after learning art fundamentals. You can look back on a piece and see why it's flat, rather than feeling vaguely dissatisfied. A lot of artists who "learn by just doing" are stuck in echochambers and don't receive valuable feedback.

It's definitely true that you can learn by simply plugging along (that's how I learned to draw for the first 20 years of life), but your growth is absolutely stunted. Why not put in the time and get exponentially faster results?

Many factors.
Some people are born talented, with a natural gift. It’s a real thing. Most of us are born “neutral”. And some of the people are born with the talent to fuck up drawings, no matter how hard they try. Such is my mom’s case, her attempts are horrendous. Great musician though.

Also bad references. Get surrounded by mostly bad art or “generic shit”, become shit. In the better case, you don’t improve. Otherwise you get somehow worse.

Studying from proper resources. Your average "art teacher" at the YMCA or the Community College is not a proper resource. Students with no experience just don't know what to look for and are taken advantage and/or mislead by people who don't know what they're doing. I've personally seen this happen numerous times. My own aunt suddenly decided to start painting for fun in her 80's, and after a couple years of doing that, she's teaching classes to students despite the fact that she knows nothing about painting, nothing about perspective, nothing about anatomy, nothing about light and shade, nothing about art, period. It's upsetting to watch. Her students know nothing and they look to her to teach them when she also knows nothing and worst of all, she's completely ignorant of her own ignorance. It's the blind leading the blind.

one of the first things I was paid money for vs one of the most recent
about 2 years apart, I still need to start making backgrounds that aren't lazy-as-shit gradients
never open commissions too early, even if friends ask you to do so, because you're going to look back at stuff like this and wince

It's honestly less a thing of confidence and more to do with me figuring out the drawing as I was doing it, aside from using a pretty blunt pencil and the drawing being about 5 inches tall.

>>4973508
I'm a "been drawing my entire life" fag, never really improved because I didn't even know what to practice. In late I started doing research on how to properly improve, and this is what I came up with:

0. The way I forced myself to actually put in the hours every day was through a service called Beeminder. If you fail to meet the goal you set yourself, you get charged the amount you also set.

1. I started with Gelnn Vilppu's gesture drawing course (the newer one, I downloaded it all through a free trial in NMA because I couldn't find it on mega or CGPeers), and even though I never finished it, it finally made me get a grasp for gesture. I also did Drawabox but gave up after lesson 1 because it's really fucking boring. If you can take it it's really good though, I still plan to finish it sometime.

2. Figure drawing every single day for at least an hour (croquis cafe sessions + I got 15k+ reference images from CGPeers). During my first 3 months or so that was almost the only thing I did and I was improving a lot, though I suggest you also start with the following points to make quicker progress. I also did Proko's figure drawing course. If I ever felt like I was having a bad day with my gesture I just rewatched some of the sample NMA Youtube videos of Glenn gesture drawing and tried to draw along with him.

3. It was through attempts at drawing from imagination that I realized how shit my construction/structure and perspective was. I took Marshall Vandruff's perspective course and did a sort of figure drawing that I haven't seen suggested before: I basically did what Steve Huston does for his gesture drawings (there are Youtube samples), but with a felt tip pen in as few strokes as I could, really trying to simplify the figure as box shapes (pic related)

>>4973564
(cont.) meant to say late Seprember btw.

4. Forget about learning anatomy. If you can't properly draw simple geometric forms, there is no way you'll be able to draw forms as complicated as bones and muscles. I think that the sacred triad of drawing is tool control (aka putting the lines where you want them), gesture and construction. If you have those 3 things mastered (which I'm not even close to doing) you can draw whatever you want. Of course anatomy is useful but only after you master the fundamentals.

5. Observe great artists drawing. Look at sketches and how they come about, you'll learn way more observing how a great artist approaches rough sketches than by studying finished drawings. Some great teachers and artists to observe drawing are Glenn Vilppu, Steve Huston and Iain McCaig. I also really love Richard Powell's gesture drawings (@rchrd.powell on instagram).

6. The Draftsmen Podcast is a fantastic place to listen to great art teachers talk at length about specific topics. I haven't gotten into learning composition but the Draftsmen episode on it is by far the most insightful resource I've seen, Marshall really knows his shit.

I'm probably missing a lot of stuff, but I think this is mostly it. Always try to have fun of course, and study the artists you love while ALWAYS keeping in mind that if your drawing looks like shit, it's more than likely due to a failure in tool control, gesture, structure, or a combination of those three. Even Kazumari who chicken scratches like crazy makes great looking stuff.

Glad I could help. Also forgot to mention it but always draw from reference. Drawing from imagination is a good way of benchmarking your knowledge or lack there of (like I tried doing in pic related), but if your intent is to practice or create a piece there is no reason not to use reference.

>>4974747
Sadly one of my biggest struggles in general is making finished artwork and actually drawing stuff I want, most of the time I just practice. I'm trying to work on it though and pic related is something I just finished (yea I'm a dirty coomer)
