Let's say you are doing a longer study/bargue plate or something like that. Is overlaying digitally to check for accuracy considered cheating? Is it a form of tracing? Is it missing the point of the study? I'm doing bargue plates digitally but I feel like I'm cheating when I overlay my drawing on the plate to check for accuracy and correct lengths and angles.

It's not cheating, overlaying it is a very easy way to check for accuracy. If you're actually talking about the barque plates then the point is to get a 1:1 copy with no deviation, it has to be *exact*. The only way to check this is to overlay your drawing on top. As long as you don't trace the plate to fix your mistake then you aren't cheating.

Right, this is driving me crazy, I cannot find the answer and my brain ain't attuned enough to observe from real life

Assuming it flesh or similar material, if this ball was coloured and on a coloured surface:
Which part of this ball would have the most saturation under regular sunlight or indoor lighting? >The area receiving the most light?
>the terminator because of subsurface scattering tinting the light leaving the surface?
>The shadow because of bounced light of the same colour intensifying the tones?
>the highlight/reflections (not this one because the light is neutral/white, but would this be the case if the light was coloured, sorry to add another question)

It shows you how far off your margin of error is.
1/1 is almost impossible without very careful measuring, but you're really trying to get good at informed judgements and freehanding it til you achieve a good likeness, since this is likely how you'll draw and paint other things.

If you overlay and it's way off, you need to keep trying at the early stages, the lay-in. If you have a repeat error like too long mid faces or small hands, commit that to memory and work to stop making the same mistake. If a form is unclear on your drawing because you've copied it poorly without understanding, redo it after figuring it out using other ref/plates. But don't get autistic about 100% photocopier accuracy

Lose this notion of "cheating". If you're trying to improve, get the most info and value out of it any way possible, dissect the plate and absorb it. You're not going to show these to anyone (I hope), so there's no "honour" or "cheating".

In fact, tracing can be a great tool to see how fucked up your brain's interpreting software is - you can see how much you corrupt and warp things when relaying them to paper by checking against the original. Just don't get obsessed by achieving accuracy, that's for machines not thinking feeling humans.

First of all, shadows will always be less saturated. You can only see colour when there's light, that's why dimmer lights make everything more gray.
I'd say halftones are the most saturated because:
1) saturation darkens value. Very light areas can't have too much saturation
2) Subsurface scattering, as you said, but only applies to strong lighting situations
Highlights and reflections can't be saturated BC (1) and reflected light is always weaker, so it'll only carry a small amount of colour
You can have high chroma light areas if the light source is very strongly tinted, but that means the lights on that situation have a relatively dark value (agains, halftones)

Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm interested too

It depends on the lighting conditions and local color, but the terminator and midtones should both be highly saturated for white skin. The ambient light in the shadow could be highly saturated, provided the source of ambient light is of a similar hue to the local color.

>>4923208
>shadows will always be less saturated
Not so. It all depends on the environment. If the ambient light is complementary or close to complementary to the local color of the object, then yes, the shadows will get desaturated. And if you are actually using your nightvision in a dark area, then yes, everything will approach grey, because your rod cells cannot really distinguish color.

>1) saturation darkens value
This could be said to be true, depending on what you mean by 'value', but is isn't strictly speaking true. If you mean the perceptual value of a color, then yeah you could say in certain circumstances, increasing saturation decreases value, but with the way these terms are generally used, saturation and value are two separate parameters.

>Highlights and reflections can't be saturated
Also not true. In nature, highlights tend not to be saturated because in nature light is very white. If you were casting a pure red light on a scene, you would have saturated red highlights, for instance.

>and reflected light is always weaker
This is technically true in that everything absorbs and/or refracts light a little bit, but it isn't quite how you mean it. In the case of reflections and specular highlights, most of the light is actually being reflected, which means the the color will be extremely close to the color of the light source.

Light and color are excessively complicated, so sorry if some or all of this post was unclear.

>> No.4924981

>>4923424
Post above already recommended Marco Bucci's videos, he'll also mention some artists. You can search for photos in different lighting conditions and find out how colour usually appears, no need of anything special. In art is a bit more complicated since you can make stylistic choices to saturate or desaturate certain places

>> No.4924993

>>4924880
Yes I guess there are exceptions but weaker light tends to create weaker colours.

>saturation and value are two separate parameters
When you work in gray scale your values have to be lighter/darker for different colours to be appear saturated (like red and yellow)

>If you were casting a pure red light on a scene, you would have saturated red highlights, for instance
Yes, that's true, but a red lights highlights would bring down the actual value to a halftone since red is inherently a dark value. But I guess there are exceptions too, I just haven't encountered them yet so I generalised a lot

>In the case of reflections and specular highlights
By reflected light I meant bounce light from the ambient, which only shows in shadows. But you're correct in your statement

>When you work in gray scale
I think this is a major part of your confusion on this topic. There isn't one specific 'grayscale' but rather there are many different ways to map a color image to s grayscale one. The one you are probably most familiar with, for instance, is the default Photoshop grayscale, which does not map black and white to the 'value' parameter as specified by Photoshop.

>red lights highlights would bring down the actual value to a halftone
Again, not strictly true. This depends highly on how you are defining value.

>which only shows in shadows
That's not exactly right either. All lighting conditions in the environment contribute to colors you see. Bounced light and ambient light are MOST NOTICEABLE in the shadows, but they do still have a minor effect on midtones. The reason you don't notice this effect is because direct light has a much larger impact, but by definition has no impact on the shadows.

Maybe you'll find an exact ref. if not, you'll need one ref for lighting, one ref for posing etc. shoes, well find a shoe or a sketch of one that matches the angle or use your own shoes. You should be collecting loads of refs. A lot of the pros are pro because they hire models for shooting or have stacks of refs or even buy them or they make their own with 3d modelling. The brush you use depends on what your style is. If I want to be rei17 I'm going to be using a blendy hard round in SAI. If I want to be say Ruan Jia, I'll use textured brushes. I use about 7 brushes frequently - hard round opaque, hard round with transfer, soft round, thick up the top, thick down the bottom, a painterly brush and some interesting sketch brushes. But I have hundreds and hundreds of brushes.

I dunno if this is the right place to ask, but does anyone know what it's called when a character in a manga "reaches" out of a manga panel Notice how in the bottom right corner, Dabi's upper half is in his own panel, but then his legs go out of it. I've always referred to it as "reaching" but i'm wondering what you guys call it?

Form is essentially the illusion of three dimensionality. All art is two dimensional, but you can imply 3d forms, or else it looks flat.

You can do it with light (IE part of a form is in shadow, implying a curve or edge), or with cross-contour lines (IE something that runs along a 3d form to imply its shape, like a wristwatch around your wrist).

Take this image as a primitive example. On the left is a flat shape, on the right the cross contour / shadows imply it's a sphere, showing form.

kinda i still struggle with drawing what I see. only to understand what i am looking at but breaking it down into 3d shapes or planes and trying to understand why i am precieving the subject like it is.
>thinking in 3d
its probably difficulty thinking in 3d, ive gotten somewhat better at it at least in finding the horizon line and VPs in images and irl, and able to draw a cube ok in perspective. I struggle with depth and overlaping forms. like if a person was laying down i wouldnt know how to rotate the figure in 3d space because i dont know where the pelvis or feet would be in space because i cant see them. I am not able to construct a 3d grid (let alone a partially zoomed in grid) in my head in which objects would interact within. Likewise if a part of the body (feet hands ass, etc) cover a majority of the picture plane like pict related i get completely confused.
i am probably overcomplicating it and should just draw

When starting on guitar, it's recommended on /mu/ that you go to justinguitar and go through his courses. Art is a lot harder than music, especially because you will be shat on if you try and copy other people's artworks directly. It's like trying to compose a piece equal to a masterwork, but it can't be inspired by it.

And there's just so much of it. You might be a 2D master but you won't know 3D. You might know how to sculpt but you don't know how to rig. And so you have to focus on the most important parts of what you want to do, because you will never master all of it. So for me, that was figure drawing. For example, from proko. Then drawing and grinding hands. Then drawing and grinding drawing faces. Then drawing and grinding perspective. Then drawing and grinding environment and so on. There's lots of stuff that you won't get around to tackling so focus on what's important to you.

>> No.4928953

>>4928897
Short answer: Not really
Long answer:
Drawabox and loomis textbooks are often recommended. Neither is perfect, both are worth looking at. They will get you started with basic skills like perspective, proportion, and the human body.
Drawing is vaguer than playing the guitar. You can say, "play a C chord", and it's either correct, or it isn't. Visuals aren't so clear cut. There's no concretely defined list of tasks you must complete before you can say "I know how to draw."
The clearest rules are the ones to perspective (how to draw a 3d space). That won't teach you everything about drawing, but you can follow the Perspective Made Easy textbook in the artbook thread if it's useful for you.

Okay this is going to sound retarded, but how do I blend/mix colours in CSP?
I don't mean blending them with the blend tool, I mean if I have a local colour of red on a persons face, and I want to add a yellow light on top, how do I do this properly? Currently if I do it on the same layer, the yellow light just slaps on there completely and doesn't pick up on the underlying red. It's probably partially a problem with opacity, but I need the yellow to interact with the red as well as be somewhat transparent/opaque.
This is driving me insane because it's impossible to work with colour when it does this.

Because it leaves line quality and decision making up to the computer instead of your hand. With stabilizer on you don't learn how to draw clean lines yourself and you're just fooling yourself into thinking you can.

Personally I think it's a crutch if you have it set to 239487234 to the point you get lag, but if you're using a regular tablet (one without screen) it's going to be incredibly hard to get perfect clean lines without stabilizer. The reason some people don't use it is because they have a Cintiq or similar, so it's their hand directly drawing on a surface they see their lines on. Don't worry, use a bit of stabilizer, and with practice you'll probably lower the number as your hand gets used to the tablet. I've never seen people do lineart on CSP without stabilizer, yet they draw just fine on paper. If your lines are clean on paper but are shit in CSP, use stabilizer and don't worry.
>>4935097
There are a couple of different settings that factor into that, you'll have to play around with them until you achieve want feels good to you. Go to brush setting, and in the "Ink" section, check the box for "Color mixing" and play around with the newly unlocked values. If that's not what you like, uncheck the box. The other value that factors is, in the "Brush tip" section, the "Brush density"; check the "Pen pressure" box and try different values. Good luck.

Yeah but I'd like to have my background as the top layer and then having each new layer go below it it doesn't really work if I just drag them manually eg. Since the white background is my top layer I won't see anything underneath

Sorry I don't know how to explain it clearly

>> No.4939122

>>4939116
You'll kind of have to get used to having the layers ordered with things on top of the white. It's like layers of paint, if you've painted over something generally you won't see under it. Of course, there's tricks around it. For example, I can make the white layer "appear" translucent by setting it to multiply, but the instant you put paint on top of that you'll see that paint as really dark. You really want to get your mind around it.

In terms of the white layer in photoshop, that can be unlocked (because by default there's a lock symbol on it preventing you from deleting it).

Say you want to keep the white layer somewhere but don't want to delete it. You can select the eye icon next to it and this hides it. And you can make it visible any time you want.

ok, so i've been practising drawing on and off a litte bit for the past few months.

i've started to notice something strange where, i'll be drawing something (say a character), and it'll be OKish, but then i'll get some detail perfect, and from that detail it suddenly becomes crystal clear how everything else needs to be drawn, to the point that when this happens, it typically involves erasing half of what's already there because it doesn't jibe with the 'perfect' details.

what the fuck is this? is this advanced autism? am i turning schizo, or does this sort of instinct normally develop as you start to practise drawing?

can anybody relate? makes me feel possessed

dae hyper fixate on detail in such a way where you exhaust yourself and hate the drawing? i do everything on an 11inch ipad but i'm wondering if instead i could put down lines and basic colors on my phone first - then transfer the art to the ipad to refine, would it be a smoother process?

idk i'm just trying to find a way to stop spending 50 hours on something that started out "okay this will just be a fun quick paint, idc if it's perfect"

thanks all
