I like the style of the drawing being semi-realistic with an overall blocky structure that you added. Just clean up the lineart (it has a minor case of chicken scratch) and outline the image with a pen.

If you have drawing software like Photoshop or Krita (it’s free and has no adds) I advise that you practice with colouring digitally to get a clear idea of what you want, it is more forgiving with mistakes IMO.

Acrylic paint is what I personally paint with IRL. It is cheap (as far as paints go) and dries quickly.

However acrylic paint is what I like to call the “cement” of the paint world, because it makes an excellent base, but a nightmare when trying to add details to the painting and it does not help that the paint also gets very flakey after a few minutes.

Different strokes for different folks, that is all I can say about advice. Hope this helps.

Style

Furry artists like this are less about fundamentals the way we know them and more about art as a delicate craft like etching or woodwork
They spend a very long time drawing hte lineart, making the shadow shapes perfect, blending them perfectly, etc. They have a strict way that they draw so that their art is always consistant.

The way they draw their eyes, the colours they choose for their shadows, the facial expressions they choose, the textures they convey. It is all stylistically chosen (likely unconsciously) to give it that particular look.

You cannot be rough and quick, you have to slow down and make your pictures as if you were delicately carving ornamental designs into metal

I tried doing a study of -Lofi's painterly art style. it's very hard to figure out his process, but it's fun messing around and trying out random brushes. I'm also using Iben Krutt's brush set and some random Shiyoon Kim and Zedig brushes I bought a few years ago and never used. every other brush set I've used is pretty well curated, but -Lofi's are a mess, it's like he included every single brush he's ever used lol. it makes it hard to tell which brushes he actually uses, but it's also fun to just try random ones to see what they do.

here's a study I did tonight of a portrait painted by Iben Krutt. I really like their use of colour, though it's hard to figure out how they choose them. it seems to be mostly intuition how they put down such bold colours. the painting style is also much more involved and tied down that Lofi's, I couldn't come close to replicating it well without a few more hours

thanks, Lofi and Iben Krutt don't draw much NSFW as far as I know. I like their stuff since it's very painterly and expressive, it makes it fun to study them. because it's so loose, their process can also be a little easier to understand. studying from old masters is good too, but this felt more relevant for my short term painting goals

Don't quote me on this, but it's all about color theory: how the colors relate and contrast with each other, the guist is that some colors create more interesting and pleasing looks than others when they are together, the most contrasting they have with each other the more interest they will generate, but too much contrast and it will be something that will be hard and even ugly to look at, hence the use of soft and grey tonalities, they ease their interaction as well as help you to attract your attention to the places you really want people to look at. But honestly I suck at explaining things, let me just show you the same videos that made the arcane logic of colors something I was finally able to understand.

Whoa hey I'm flattered! You're on the right track I think. My process isn't fancy. I start with middle values and kinda wiggle my way outward gradually. I always start monochromatic or close to it. I gradually sneak up on colors like I do values, only really worrying about establishing color temperature at first. I kinda bounce back and forth between drawing things out with line work initially vs just going in with a brush and carving out shapes that way. Depends on my mood I guess. For portraits I usually do lines. Sorry for the messy brushes. I only use a few of them for like 90% of my painting.

No problem! It definitely isn't easy. A successful painting often gives the impression that it was easy but the more deft the piece seems the more the person behind it worked their ass off to reach that skill level and reach that level of aesthetic satisfaction in the specific piece. Sargent was probably dropping f-bombs constantly when he painted, lol. That's art for you. Try working with a more monochromatic approach, yeah...but whatever you do you should experiment. Go crazy with color right away and practice that. I do think though that there's a hierarchy that is something like composition>drawing>values>colors. Give less of a shit about what hue/saturation/value of what you select and make absolutely sure you're putting that mark in the right place.
