Some ground rules to start this thread and the next /beg/ threads off:

>if you are /beg/
Don't ever give advice.
You can relate and share your hardships with other /beg/s, but never give them advice.
If you MUST give advice, start the reply off with "I'm beg, but what worked for me is..."

>Before you post your work
1. Every person giving advice here expects for you to have at least read some of the sticky, and that you already know what you should be doing to improve.
In that light, replies such as "grind more fundamentals" are perfectly viable advice.
We expect you to know what the general fundamentals are (gesture, anatomy, perspective, drapery, etc.), and we expect you to know where you can find resources to practice these subjects.
Sometimes literally the only good advice to give is to practice more and improve your technique.

2. DO NOT post your 5 minute sketches that you didn't put much thought into. If you do post them then make sure to ask for SPECIFIC advice on a specific subject.
If you post a doodle and ask "where did i go wrong" or "how should I continue from here", expect to get meme replies such as "Loomis".

Follow these simple rules and the generals will become much more productive for both the /beg/s and the people giving advice

if the person has an incorrect understanding of something and they give advice on that subject, at least their incorrect understanding is revealed. this is better than if they keep dont say anything, are never challenged and think that they are right for the rest of their life
>replies such as "grind more fundamentals" are perfectly viable advice
this advice is about as helpful as telling the other person to 'get better'. the person giving the advice, finding the work unappealing but dont know what specifically is wrong, vaguely gesture towards the sticky. the criticizer doesnt reveal any understanding of anatomy/color/composition etc, and the person being criticised wont know either. it's less than useless

After finishing your sketch, reduce the layer opacity to 30-40%, make a new layer on top of it, and very slowly and precisely go over the sketch with a pressure sensitive pen brush. Focus on drawing with long uninterrupted lines.

Also give your lines more thought. Looking at your work it is obvious that you are rushing with your drawing, at least with the line art. Take your time, put some thought on where the line should go, how it should be shaped and contoured.

I depends on the style you're going for. I personally like to keep my pressure sensitivity pretty "linear", while minimal pressure still keeping some thickness.

Not really. You're a beginner, and you're attempting drawings that are above your skill level. You clearly need more work in the basic building blocks of form, line, and anatomy.

KISS always applies: Keep It Simple, Stupid.

Go back and draw more basic forms, work on line quality and confidence, and choose more simple poses and focus on each part of the body, and start working on anatomy. The small attempt at construction on the torso shows how lacking in any real knowledge of how the torso is constructed is pretty obvious.

Slow down. Go back to the beginning steps, work from there. Stop working on a transparent background, too, it's distracting to the eye.

>> No.4912679

You're drawing the opening of the lids on a plane that's different from the face. There's perspective there, very, small, but you're not indicating it. You should see a slight side contour of the left eye's eyelids at this angle, but you have the lines of the eyelids pointing out into space.

Also, you have two different sizes and shapes - our brains look at the eyes first, and we unconsciously know when they're not right. It's what cartoonists can use to give quick visual cues for a character, by making the eyes two different sizes and shapes.

Try a more "S" or serpentine line to wrap the edge of the lids around the eye.

Depends on the “spacing” setting of the brush. Turning the spacing down keeps your lines from looking like a bunch of stamped circles but it makes it so you have to use VERY low flow values to easily do gradients.

Think of opacity as the MAXIMUM amount of color you can put down (if you set it to 50 you’d have to color the same spot twice to get 100% opacity). Flow is more of how many times you have to go over an area on a SINGLE stroke without picking up the pen to get to the opacity level (and again, it varies based on the “spacing” setting). I end up changing it around all the time when I draw to get different effects, so it’s hard to give a basic “start here” value and you’ll have to experiment.

Anyone have any practical advice on grinding Loomis head construction?

I realized I've just been copying for past few months and can't construct even a simplified face to save my ass. Copying from photos or other artwork I can at least check what went wrong, and for the rest of the body I can just add stuff on top of the initial gesture to some degree, but with faces I don't have a single clue where I keep fucking up since I don't have anything to compare it to. I've tried applying Loomis head to photo studies but the result always ends up being subpar compared to just directly comparing relations, contours, negative spaces, and the framework just feels like it's constantly in the way.

Construction is an important tool in the toolkit for advanced artists. Advanced.
>Nearly every art class recommends learning gesture followed immediately by construction
Art students are never day one, week one, month one, year one beginners. Art students are without exception people who have been drawing for their entire lives. And their classes are tailored accordingly.
>You won't be able to do anything more than rote copying until you get the hang of it.
You're only revealing yourself to be completely ignorant. Construction is required when drawing from imagination. Not copying,

This whole dialog is moot, trying to teach somoene construction is stupid. It's like Common Core and trying to force everyone to learn basic arithmetic shortcuts everyone with triple digit IQ figures out on their own anyway.

If you draw from imagination, and have triple digit IQ, you will eventually figure out some kind of "blocking in the form" or "construction" process. As a beginner you are already disadvantaged in 1000 different ways, trying to copy a professional artists construction method and forcing yourself to painstakingly replicate it for every figure you draw is just going to slow down your progress

You are a beginner. You are going to draw misshapen people with shitty proportions. You are going to do this 10,000 times before you draw half decent looking figures. So save yourself the time and dont introduce a needless extra step of some overcomplicated mannequin bullshit.

Most high level artists use barely any construction when drawing. Look how quickly vilppu turns a bean shape into a beautiful torso. This is simple but effective construction. When /ic/ tells begs to study construction they try to force /begs/ into making full body mannequins and hyper detailed featureless heads

These are messy (and I don't just mean the scribbly shading).

Values are ALL over the place. Areas that would be best simplified as 1 value contain 2-3.

1st, clean up your work. Either do tidy hatching, or just fill your shapes with solid values. If you don't want to put in the time to do it, you should pick something besides value studies, because consistent tones are critical to getting anything from it.

Start with 2 values only (you can make one white, one dark grey). Draw the model, and focus on simplifying shapes that you see. For each "light" shape, don't fill it in. Fill all the "dark" shapes with the same tone (where that boundary lies is up to you but squinting so that everything becomes dark / light shapes will help you decide).

Once you can do them tidy, step up to 3 values (add a lighter grey in between the dark grey and white, OR go black grey white).

As others have mentioned, arm too long, legs too short. The arm may be a robotic part of the design so I can forgive that if so, but measure from the head to the crotch. That same distance again should be the heels (and the thickness of the boots would make them look even longer).

Keep grinding though.

Your coloring seems so fearful and sterile. Go ahead and use darker shades and richer colors, the rendering n the apron is okay but suffers from the same problem. It is just too bright and it pops out way too much becasue the rest of the picture is kind of sterile.

Go ahead and push the saturation of those colors and add more shadows.

At this point you're just making like a cartoon version of the references you pick. Very disappointing, you don't listen to anybody who cares about giving you a critique or a different point of view.
You should quit posting your work altogether in order to improve because at this point you're here posting just for the amount of (you)s you might get and not to become a better artist.

If someone is ready to pay, you're good enough to take money. Period.

As for freebies for networking, no. You can make your own portfolio stuff to show off for samples, and if you get a killer request that you think would be great in your portfolio, fine do it. But don't think of it as networking because nobody will ever jerk off to your art and then tell a friend "Hey I jerk off to this weird shit, come pay money and this guy will draw that shit for you too".

the thing about skin tone is that humans have such a huge variety that you cant go wrong, where you have to go right though is in values, as long as the colours work together you can make a human blue and it can look find it the values aee

You've done an ok job at a "rim light" where it's really RIGHT on the edge, but that doesn't add a lot of depth, it just pops the head out from the background. To get it right you need to imagine a light shining from behind and to the side of the head in such a way that it interacts with the face and makes more than just the very very edge light up.

Look up "zvork" and also https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kA7mFUWlZjU (which you'll have to slow down and pause at the right time).

A real "back light" illuminates some of the volume of the face (based on planes, as you supposed). If planes are an issue, Asaro head is a pretty good start, but before you run out and buy one, give this virtual one a shot: https://sketchfab.com/3d-models/asaro-head-9d26548182f8465a8e97371a9170561e

I'm not sure which one of you is the guy who made the original post (if it's even one you) but this is why you don't make progress, each thread you make the same mistakes and you don't make a conscious effort to improve you just post whatever shit you just draw in order to get replies.
Do yourself a favor and stop posting, do what people tell you in order to improve or even start studying how to actually fucking draw because it's the same story with you each thread.

Its good that you're working on construction and shading anon, but can you try a few slower ones? Maybe do the construction and post THAT so that it can be commented on before you proceed, and then take the time to be really tidy with your art?
