Check the black and white histogram to make sure it's not slanted too far to one side and set a black layer to colour mode and make sure that your point of focus eg character is very clearly distinguishable from the background and details on it can easily be read. And assuming it was blocked it with grayscale flats you can very easily edit it to read well before slapping on the colours.

Yeah, on dad your change is going to be extremely incremental, and even then your improvement might not be apparent in every single piece you do. There are many artists off the top of my head who have made significant improvement since starting dad (Saucy, Bezdomny, Gottagitgud, Guespiere to name a few) but even for them, it's not 100% obvious without giving their work a thurough look through. If you can, it's good to find other artists you trust and respect to give you feedback on your improvement if you want external acknowlegement and critique.
