How do you do a quick sketch before trying to start on accurate contours? My proportions are way, way off if I just quickly jot down some shapes, and if I try to measure proportions of those I end up with a page full of scribbles, upon which I then have to lay on actual contours.
I've done better without any loose lines before, but I worked fairly small and now I'm trying to fill an A4 with a single subject and struggling.

I like to place the torso first as big egg shape. It gives you direction and perspective and scale to place everything else. Some do the head first and base off that. If you are happy with torso size, place the head and where he is looki g relative to the torso. These are very light lines.

This is comic artist david finch doing hulk sketch. See how he starts and adds parts of arms and legs and keeps coming back to put more detail when happy with things? Thats the general idea.

What is the best site/resource/video/etc. to get a full 360 degree view of a young (or older) woman's head? I know I can use movies, news, porn, and youtubers/streamers to get different angles, but what are some other ways (again resources or just different professions I might be forgetting that offer a lot of views of a person) outside of life drawing? I'm most interested in getting a lot of angles of a single person so I can consistently draw them. I'm even willing to pay models for a video or pictures if you guys know where I can do that.

Pictures are fine too but I feel like video is better since you can get thousands of angles from one source versus tons of pictures

Hey that's how all pro artist started, they did art because they enjoy it.
maybe start the day with just " mindlessly scribbling" whatever you want. look at other artist work and what do you like about it. would you like to add that element you liked into your art ? do some research on the subject and learn it then apply it into your scribbles.
repeat this process and your scribbling will become a finished artwork you enjoy doing!
now some subjects ( anatomy, construction ) will be harder and more frustrating than others but with time and going at it again and again you will eventually get it .
Good luck !

I am embarrassingly bad at gesture drawing (this is the hampton method). I realized I don’t know bodily proportions as well as I thought but another huge problem I had was the midsection. I just don’t know how to connect the arms to the midsection (and bend the arms), or connect the legs to the midsection and when I do it just looks like a giant cluster fuck of curves. Anything I should do or learn before trying again would be very helpful because I’ve tried gesture for a while and have just never been able to get the hang of it. I don't post that much at all but I did post about 4-5 months ago when I started taking art more seriously. The image I posted back then was the coloured one in this post's image.

Back then, I asked whether there could be any solution to the problem where I felt my drawings were a little stiffer, and a nice anon told me that I should focus a bit more on gesture and trying to convey more of an action with my characters.

I'm using this picture because both took me the same amount of time. I haven't improved much in hands, but at least I'm drawing them now.

Does this drawing still look stiff? Other than the hair, have I fucked up anywhere with the head etc? How can I make it more appealing?

Kinda wish I had more time to draw in the last couple months, but finishing my degree was hell.

Calm down Anon, I think the answer is that your values are too bright compared to the picture and the overall contrast is weak. The more you can handle the values correctly the more realistic your picture will appear.

Yeah, you did well Anon. There is no real need to make the background even more detailed that will run into composition issues that the background is actually more attention grabbing than the subject, which is I would assume the girl in this case. It is already feels like that but it is still okay. You could put more details on the girl and add more contrast to her a well. I mean if you think about it the farther away you look the less details will actually be visible and contrast will slowly fade and wash into single colors.

Good job still tough.

These are much more in the vein of construction than gesture. Try to break things down to literally just motions - not even volumes. Don't try to get a lot of perspective into it (VERY few wrapping lines are enough).

Start with around 10 (or fewer) very long, flowy lines - it should take less than a minute when you're up to speed (but if you need longer take it). Try to find the longest line that flows through the pose and get it first.

Gesture can build in complexity until you have 2-5 minute "quick sketch" drawings which depict certain anatomical landmarks, basic tone lay in etc. but the root of gesture is understanding the flow of the pose. Exaggeration is encouraged but not required.

You do NOT need to be able to recreate the reference image from the gesture. At most it should be clear enough that someone could be told to "pose like this" and understand vaguely where their body parts should go.

>> No.4909773

Not that anon but thanks this is helpful. Should I learn more bodily proportions and how limbs work to do better gesture drawings ?

>> No.4909807

>>4909773
Proportion and anatomy are pretty low on the scale for plain gesture drawing (they're crucial for "quick sketch" style longer drawings but that's a different topic). You can draw things WAY out of proportion and still get a sense of weight, movement etc. from the drawing.

That said, a basic map of crucial points on the body (bony landmarks such as the acromion processes, sternum, dimples of venus, ASIS points on the pelvis, etc.) is super helpful to understand what you're seeing. There are systems such as Reilly abstraction etc. that sort of connect those points with a pre-defined set of lines that help navigate the body, but those are more useful, again, in a quick sketch scenario.

Eventually you will 100% need to learn proportion, structure etc. to APPLY your gesture drawings by building them into constructions (mannequinization) but for the gestures themselves they're of secondary importance.

Putting multiple dark lines next to eachother creates a texture. The way that you did it DOES look like a brain to me.

Learning to use lines the right way to create the right texture is one of the biggest parts of inking (which is essentially what you're doing here).

You need a lot more time / finesse to make it look like hair (but don't try to draw every hair strand or anything).

Where do I put the eye within the eye socket? It's obviously not taking all the space inside of it but then where does it sit? Exactly in the center?

How am I doing?

Just the muscles of the thighs seem to not be enough to desribe the actual shape of a human butt. What else is going on there? I mean I know it's fat but are there any refs for me to see where exactly does it sit and how creates the actual shape of the butt? I can't find anything.

More practice. Top three were the ones I started with - spent a bit more time with them, but didn't like how they turned out, so I did faster practice and it looks better, I think

How do I go about coloring cute loli stomach?
I rarely do color but I wanna get better at this. Normally only do sketches, but I wanna get closer to finishing a piece.
Should I do some stills or continue drawing human skin?
I'm using krita.
I'd appreciate it if someone has any resources on practicing rendering.
