Do you have an iPad? Do use apps like Procreate, ArtStudio Pro, Clip Studio Paint, Infinite Painter, Affinity Photo/Designer, or any other the other drawing and painting apps? Do you have a brush hoarding disorder? You're in the right thread!

I'm still baffled why Autodesk basically stopped developing Sketchbook for iOS. It's really good, and if they'd put more work into it, it could've really competed with Procreate to be the dominant art app. But they gave up, and it's only received bug fix updates for the past 3 years.

That said, I'm not familiar with Autodesk, so maybe their priorities changed at some point, or they didn't think the iPad would gain the kind of traction it has.

i agree artstudio has a much better brush engine, painting brushes feel infinitely better on artstudio.
But drawing in procreate just feels very slightly smoother and less laggy. For that reason alone I use procreate since that's what I value most, but if the latency on artstudio felt like procreate I would use it and never look back.

I'll never understand the praise for Autodesk Sketchbook on iPad. There are so many bugs. The biggest deal-breakers for me are copy/paste adding random artifacts/noise, and transformations making lines blurry (even for simple translations). >>4898665
Weird brush engine. Some people can adapt to it, some people can't. The thing that bugs me is that brushes in Procreate don't really blend. The Procreate developers will tell you to use the blend tool, which sucks. There are some third party brush packs that have brushes meant to be used as blenders that work well, but it just feels like extra steps that you don't need to spend time doing in other apps.

I tried painting with the round brush in Procreate but I feel like I'm unable to make my strokes blend together in a way that doesn't feel too digital. As in, you can clearly see each stroke pilling up on top of another, and only way to smooth things out is to smudge in.

just accept it is how it is, you wouldn’t expect tempera to work like oils or ink to work like charcoal, you gotta adapt to the medium, not look for ways to make the medium behave like you want it to

>> No.4901785

Digital is always going to be different from traditional media, although I would argue that Procreate does a poor job at trying to recreate traditional media compared to many other options. How close any particular application gets is dependent on the brush engine and what third parties do with it. Despite its brush engine, there are some very nice brushes available for it from third parties who clearly spent a lot of time learning all the weirdness of the brush engine to create some nice brushes.

That said, I prefer ArtStudio Pro now. The brush engine is better, and if you're familiar with Photoshop's brush engine, ASP's engine is easy to work with, since they're not only very similar, they also feel very similar. I've always used Photoshop.

added a non-pencil for reference and turned off pressure sensitivity on all brushes, the tilt works as you’d expect

Highly unlikely. The brush engines feel quite different.

>given that photoshop brushes work in both
I mean, I guess that's technically true if you ignore how Procreate fails to properly import PS brushes 90% of the time. ArtStudio Pro is just better in this respect. I think it's because ASP's brush engine is clearly modeled on PS's engine.

>> No.4907005

>>4906800
ps brushes work because ps is huge and both devs implemented a system to translate the brushes
ps brushes don’t actually work in either, both apps read the code and recreate an approximation in their own brush engines, which is why the results vary
the devs would need to do the same for every other brush engine (and extension, which is why procreate can’t read .tpl but artstudio can) specifically, and then rewrite it every time the engine in question changes, like artstudio’s just did or procreate did last december
ps is worth the effort because there’s a shitload of brushes and adobe don’t give a singular fuck about its painting aspect so any feature creep is highly unlikely

Backups in general are good. The more people need to play whack-a-mole with pirated materials, the more likely they are to not bother. I don't think the average person selling Procreate brushes is losing that many sales as a result of threads like this anyway.

If my account got nuked, I'd just make another and upload the most commonly requested packs, and then upload others as they're requested. I've got 22 TB of external storage, so keeping around ~14 GB of Procreate materials isn't a problem.

Digital and physical are different mediums. It doesn't bother me what sort of tricks and "cheats" people use with digital. I do it too, albeit to a lesser extent, since I started out with physical media and used that exclusively for decades. Making great digital art takes talent, but physical art doesn't have any undo, copy/paste, layer adjustments, etc, so I'd be lying if I didn't say traditional media artists impress me more than digital.

What I dislike about the kind of stuff in your example is how clean and sterile it is. I see that often with weeb art and other stuff. Everything's too clean. The art itself can be okay, but it feels lifeless due to how pristine it is. Part of what gives a piece of artwork personality is the imperfections, and a lot of digital art is missing that kind of thing.

I've pretty much switched. Have barely used Procreate since ArtStudio Pro 3 came out. Procreate does have some nice third party brushes and a slick interface, but ArtStudio Pro has a nicer brush engine, my Photoshop brushes actually work in it, and the developer actually fixes bugs and addresses user feature requests instead of wasting time on gimmicky face painting shit.

It's $12. Give it a try.

About the only thing I'd like for ASP is better documentation. Procreate's website has a nicely written and laid out manual, and there's nothing like that for ASP.

Speaking of learning, I imagine something that draws people to Procreate is the thousands of tutorial videos available for it on YouTube. Meanwhile, ASP has next to nothing. Lucky Clan needs to hire someone to make some slick "how to get started with ArtStudio Pro" type of videos. I think that would really help, especially since Procreate looks very minimal and easy to use when you first open it, while ASP looks more complicated for someone who's maybe never used a more robust drawing app.

>>4934840
Oh nice, thank you for these. I'm not the anon you responded to, but I asked for these brushes in a previous thread.

>> No.4935006

>>4934860
I mean, procreate needs tutorials because everything is based on gestures, drawing your finger across the screen, swiping with two fingers in a certain direction etc, which is shit you’re not going to intuit on your own. artstudio is standard gui stuff, you see button, you press button, you see slider, you move slider, etc

>> No.4935133

>>4935006
That's kind of true, but I think ASP could benefit from some well done official tutorial videos.

Also, I was more or less talking about all of those "how to ___ with Procreate" videos you see on YouTube.

>how to draw manga with Procreate
>how to do calligraphy with Procreate
>how to ink comic books with Procreate
>how to paint a portrait with Procreate
>how to paint a landscape with Procreate
>how to design a logo with Procreate
>how to design a tattoo with Procreate

And so on. There's a ton of this stuff and it acts as free advertising for Procreate. There's really nothing like this for ASP. The only YouTuber I've seen talk about ASP repeatedly has been Borodante.

>> No.4935229

>>4935133

Lol, come on, some of them are actually good. Robert Marzullo's comic book inking videos and Kurt Russell's comic book coloring videos are good (you can probably tell my work is comic related). The ASP developers decided to not set any such limits, but if you're not careful, you'll run into performance issues and possibly instability.
