Construction is a big part of it (understanding boxes, spheres, cones - and where all these shapes relate in regard to proportions of the human figure). When you practice gesture drawing you'll get a natural feeling of the form and how the body works by seeing the overall 'rhythms' of the body and seeing all of its parts work. You can think of construction as the overlay on top of your foundation, your foundation being gesture drawing.

>Anime is just very advanced symbol drawing, they go out of their way to avoid learning fundamentals
Look at the figure who is the focal point here. To call "perceived" 2D forms "symbol drawing" is absurd. A proper understanding not only of the box. contours of the face and its planes need to be understood to construct a face in pic related - but anatomy as well. I immediately go to the eyes on the main figure - since they are 3D spherical forms, with wrapping forms around those spheres applied in perspective (the iris and pupil). The only reason we see eyes as "2D" is because of the simplification of the eyelids, lashes, eye socket and so on and so forth. Knowing this entire head is a box in perspective with other forms that twist/turn, change shape, etc. may prove a challenge to some anons - but that is exactly all part of "feeling the form."

>> No.4900793

>>4900673
It's the opposite for most commercial art. Anime tends to have form, while most western art is flat. The latter became particularly common in the 90s, when they started animating more shows in the US, and needed to cut costs. Prime examples of flat art styles that have influenced most contemporary western artists are Bruce Timm's Batman, Ren and Stimpy, anything Calarts and pretty much every Nickelodeon show. You can also see it in most of the later reboots of 80s cartoons. It's all flat, simplistic shit. Other examples are The Simpsons, Family Guy, Bob's Burgers and pretty much every cartoon aimed at "adults". It also goes for the vast majority of strip comics (with Calvin and Hobbes being a rare exception), and a very large chunk of story based comics.
The few western styles that have some form are the generic Disney/furry styles (which these days are literally based off 3D models), and a handful of the more talented superhero artists, who are quite rare. Even the stuff in the OP, which has an excellent sense of form, is heavily influenced by anime.

This is the opposite of form. Form is about understanding how the lines form a shape in three dimensional space. This is the opposite. The lines are all over the place, and the curves even go in the wrong direction. Look at how the boots wrap around the legs, and how the thighs don't even connect correctly to the torso. It's just objectively wrong.
The lines are also really bad.

this is correct but you're missing the point, whilst it CAN happen, it's reserved to very specific conditions, like the ones you mentioned, and I recommend you should try doing some renders in a more conventional perspective, just to see where you're at.

sidenote, your pic made me notice that you didn't put in any sort of reflective or ambient light, ambient occlusion, etc. your shadow side is exactly one value, and whilst these concepts are a bit more advanced, they can really help make a simple value study pop

I did, there’s a 5 point value difference between the middle of the shadow and the curving side planes, not counting the terminator

everyone itt is a self conscious /beg/ venting their frustration with their own shitty art
then the /beg/s getting crabbed get butthurt and post in /beg/, which makes the turbo /beg/s butthurt because now they’re too self conscious to post their even shittier work, so the scream at /beg/s for posting and claiming they’re ““““““int””””” and then they make a thread for ““““““true begs””””” to post their work in, then the same /beg/s post their work in there, and the cycle continues

I can’t. I’m not the original artist and I barely ever draw regarding spine key points. My torso work is more shaped on the rib age and the pelvis because they have a more clear sense of form to me.

I don't know why people are ripping on you when you adjusted the facial features exactly where they're supposed to be. Obviously there still needs to be work done on the skull and its perspective (which is the artist's fault, obviously), but your version is still way better than the original.

I think there are 2 possibilities:
1. The figures seem to overemphasize the triceps, contracting too much even in the middle pic when supposedly the triceps are stretched out thin with arm bent like that.
2. The tlatissimus dorsi is not prominent enough, which is understandable when your arms are extended further to the back, in the pic you posted her arms are spread at 180 degrees.

I placed the eyes on a more proper perspective, the eye closer to the camera is bigger. The nose got fix to get rid of the jarring “it somehow got stuck in the eye” case. And, the jawline was lifted up by a bit because her head was suppose to turn slightly upwards in the original piece.

>> No.4906437

>>4906195
well, even if we're just focusing on the arm, you can start by looking at the pec and the lat. neither is placed correctly, pushing both bicep and tricep out of proper alignment in the rightmost image.

the lats are pushed too far forward, making the pit of the arm look flat and separation between tricep and latissimus too pronounced. the pectoral muscles are drawn and shaded improperly, and drawn out of perspective, which is partly responsible for making the bicep too short and giving the impression that the bicep and its attachment to the coracoid process aren't aligned.
