I love animation, but I hate anything that's "made with kids in mind" And that's like 99% of the jobs where I live (south america).
Every job offer I come across is nothing but people trying to replicate cartoon network.

I'm studying animation at local university I enjoy it, sure, but what should I do once I finish it if I want to avoid "the west cartoon" mentality.?

Opened up one of my old animations, bumped up the framerate to 48FPS, and then did a bunch of manual inbetweening. high FPS 2D animation might appease the virgin gamer market, but economically it doesn't make sense to work with such high framerates. this took way too long and doesn't even add anything to the animation other than 2x more frames. the only thing that higher FPS 2D animation seems to have going for it is the wow factor.
was a fun exercise tho, ive always wanted to see what it'd look like if 48FPS was done by hand without any interpolation distortion and weird parallax artifacts.

Sorry to say dude, but you're gonna have to take jobs that you probably wont enjoy when you're trying to break into the animation industry. Nobody started off their careers sprinting out of the gate, and you shouldn't take people's success as something that came to them instantly. Always assuming that the gritty adult animation jobs are even out there or that they will somehow come to you, locks you out of the industry entirely.
Avoiding work because you hate anything that's "made with kids in mind" is gonna yield you some pretty poor results in finding a job in general, be it from you local animation industry, the American industry, or the anime industry.
If you really got into this profession because you love animation, now is the time to suck it up put in the work.

>Weilin Zhang
Insane amount of practicing the fundamentals of animation first. The man used to animate only with stick figures and basic anatomy early on. Using basic software like Pivot and Flash, he just got in tune with actually animating instead of being hung up with learning art fundamentals at the same time. He got insanely good at animating, and as the years went by he finally started to pick up proper drawing fundamentals and started to apply them to his work. He puts animation before illustrating, just like James Baxter. Animation, acting, motion, and emotion all come first; then your pretty drawings come last.
Treating animation like hundreds of illustrations will make your work stiff and uninspired. Your poses will look boring and too rigid, and your actual animation quality will definitely suffer the more you focus on making your illustrations look nice. By putting your animation ideologies before your skills as an artist, your work will always come out more dynamic and interesting than if you spent hundreds of hours perfecting every single frame as if they were illustrations. This is the reason why most industry animators can get a 15 second rough cut done per-day and keep going. Illustrators can spend hours on a single drawing, animators can spend the same amount of time on an entire action consisting of dozens of drawings.
Weilin Zhang is a good example of high technical skill in both animation and illustration, but his skills as an animator come from the fact that he prioritized learning animation before he started to take art very seriously. Now that he's also an incredibly talented artist, he's basically unstoppable with what he can do.

In order to become a great animator, understand that the actual skill you gain as an animator will always outweigh everything you learn with art fundamentals. Studying your art fundamentals can always come later, but always remember that animation is NOT illustrating.

The twelve principles of animation are everything. After that, it's nothing but polish.
To get to this level in particular, I'd assume you have to have a ridiculously solid grasp of figure drawing, perspective, cinematography, and timing. To do that, you probably have to watch a lot of fights across anime and old style kung fu films. Although the flying spike dragons look to be in 3d, the a angle the artist uses lines up really well.

I've never been big these "sakuga" demo animations that you see a lot on twitter.
Like yeah I get it, it's impressive on a technical level but they all feel so homogeneous while having that similar "look at me mommy I'm literally japanese" vibe.
It's like the 2D animation equivalent of those large LOTR/Avengers battle set pieces, so much going on but man I could not be any less engaged.
I guess it's just a personal thing but I've always found these to be very gaudy and shallow, I also felt the same way towards stick fights when I was a kid.

exactly the same feelings about 'sakuga' here, when in animation you can create anything, so many animators go to the same homogenous overdone actions, mostly to show off how well they can animate. absolutely no originality, just technical masturbation at that point, but i suppose it's also a fault of the industry.

(inb4 that's how you get an anime job, i don't care, just because it's a part of trying to get into the industry, it doesn't make the shots any more interesting, i'd argue it makes it worse)

I want to try my hand at animating so I made this to get familiar with animation in CSP.
I've never done animation so I wasn't sure what to expect but jumping in blind was actually pretty useful, I've learned a lot of things that I'll keep in mind for the next. Most notably:

- Be more precise with my sketches so as not to guess so much when doing my linework. If I had kept in mind 3d forms when sketching and stayed clean the lineart would've been a breaze.
- I should've probably put down 2 or 3 key poses and then inbetween, the way I animated here was just go frame by frame without any idea of where I was going.
- Bigger canvas would've helped with keeping flats clean.

I'm not going to work on it any more because it would be wasting time polishing a turd, but I have a good idea of what to work on next.

you know, having high standards is a good thing for personal growth. if you can't critique things that are above your level, you're most likely going to grow into something that is technically good, but completely un-marketable. The action on the hair, arms, tits, and body don't make sense at all. The poses you picked are WAY too stiff, which makes the horizontal jittering really obvious. The motion of the individual hair pieces shouldn't be trying to wrap up as the character STARTS going down, it should be just as the character is at the height of their bounce. The arms just suddenly jump into another pose entirely for no reason at all. I get you were probably trying to add some bit of secondary action but the sudden pose change doesn't make sense. The body also just stops all of the vertical momentum as it hits the base of the jump, as if this character is just some gross gelatin slab bouncing on a table.
You're trying too hard to make your drawings look decent, whereas you barely even know how to do basic animation fundamentals. You're not a very good artist, so quit practicing with complex character designs and do this kinda shit with stick figures before you start getting too confident. Worry about all your pretty drawings later when you know a little bit more about animating.
Put down the coomer bullshit as well, practice before you start beating off.

Why don't you just admit you obsess over generic anime already. We're talking solely about the animation, and if you don't respect the animation, then you have no reason being here. You're not being an intellectual right now if that's what you're thinking of yourself. who are you referring to? the successors of the 9 old men who are also stuck in their time? The only interesting part about this film is that he's animating with realistic figures, but it comes out stiff and mechanical because of the nature of the medium.

that video is an exercise in animation more than it is an actual appealing piece of work. The reason it is praised is because of what it is technically. you can see the limits of the process he used, the floaty movement, clear pose to pose and janky camera movements, there is absolutely no reason for it to be animated.

But the biggest offender of all in that piece is the sheer ugliness of the film. it's not appealing to look at.

I don't think that you understand that a fuckton of the greatest industry animators of today; regardless of the style or medium, have looked up to Richard Williams' animation in their lives. I wonder if there's a particular reason why quite a lot of animators who respect RW and admire his animation ideologies currently have jobs and you don't. Maybe it's because you're a textbook example of the Dunning-Kruger effect, since I know you've seen at least one or two video essays loosely based on the animation medium. Maybe you tried it a year or two ago in middle school and gave up on it but feel you're still an "animator" for trying, which you feel justifies your broad uneducated statements. I'm not entirely sure, but I know for a fact that any of the statements that you've thrown down here today have no weight to them at all. You should understand that the only way for you to feel as if you have any authority over broad statements is if you have work that is exceptional. So just fucking come on already, let's see your animation skill already. I'm feeling down for doing some honest critiquing right now.

I'm working in animation as well, but I mostly respect RW for sharing proper animation knowledge with the commoner such as myself. I didn't follow his work, and I found his artstyle to be a bit unappealing at times, but what he did for an entire generation of animators is still insane.
I look up to a lot of the modern-day animators in the industry; both Western and in Japan, but RW was just a teacher of mine that I never met. I read his book and applied myself.
I respect him animation-wise, but as an artist I never followed his work that much.

Try giving a bit more anticipation by holding the frames before the shot, and maybe easing in frames of the tank before the shot and then holding the frames before the shot for longer. Exaggerate the blow back from the shot to comical levels, then pull it back to where you want it to be. Right now the center of mass of the body doesn't move horizontally, you want the whole thing to appear to tip backwards. Maybe through extending the forward legs and crushing the back legs, they look too stable right now. Like the part that attaches to the front legs don't move at all right now. Personally I find it easier to go too far when exaggerating something and then pulling it back, then trying to hit the mark. Everybody is different though so use what works for you.
I really like the look of the tank, great work anon.

Every time I hear the word “animation” i get very very very angry. My brother fell for the animation meme and all he ever fucking talks about is animation. He won’t stop looking at the endless supply of jewtube tutorials, he watches 2 minute cartoons for 2 hours because he will pause frame by fucking frame just to see why it works, every time we watch a show he has to autistically sit down and tell me why it works instead of just sitting down and enjoying it, every time an adult cartoon “pushes a boundary” like the horse show with depression or the gem show with being a total flaming faggot he becomes a total shill for it, he leaves his art shit everywhere, he hasn’t gotten a haircut in weeks because he hardly knows what a normal haircut looks like anymore, he doesn’t have any other friends because cartoons are his friends now: why go outside and meet imperfect people when you have an endless supply of saccharine anime girls, robotic VRtubers, and bright flashy cartoons all at the click of a button to give yourself the illusion of a social circle? this word embodies everything I hate about bugmen manchildren and their disgusting escapist cult. If I could go back in time and murder every single pioneer of animation starting from the cave painters to the indie e-begger patreon artist I would take immense pleasure in doing so. I thought the word animation meant to give life but all it has done is taken my brothers. I hate every single one of you.

those people are picked randomly on the internet and not employees. they lie about knowing the pipeline just to get these animu jobs

>train the newbies
It's not up to the company to train you in Animation, it's up to you to train yourself before you start taking on jobs you barely even know how to do. The Japanese animation industry is built upon skilled artists who know what they're doing, and in order to succeed you just need to know the lingo and understand your position right out the gate.
A lot of foreigners don't speak Japanese too well, so a lot of the time when going back and forth with notes, the animator/supervisor gets lost in translation from both sides. The language barrier is tough as hell to get past and they'd rather work with people who KNOW what they're in for rather than some newbie who just drops the ball at every turn.
Why pay more money to train some useless foreigner when you can keep the low budget as-is and keep paying the experienced animators you already know well?

look how they massacred my boy.
60FPS interpolated animation footage looks like garbage because some of the data it's trying to interpolate isn't even fucking DRAWN yet. If you look at every single time there's an asset passing on top of another through parallax, you'll notice this awful distorted mess where the algorithm is trying to blend interpolate lines that didn't exist in one of the drawings. It's really obvious with low-framerate work.
Not to mention that all the intricate arcs intended by the animators are suddenly turned into dozens of little linear interpolations in every animation. Arcs turn into the edges of octogons when you do this kinda shit.

Particularly if you're working with paper, charting your keys helps to keep track of where the breakdowns/in-betweens should go. For example -- an animator may choose to work on their key pass, then flip through and mentally pick out which parts need in-betweening, and then jot the needed drawings into the charts.

This isn't as necessary in digital animation, where you can simply playback and re-arrange drawings at will thru the timeline.

HOWEVER, this is all assuming that a single animator is doing both keys and in-betweening.

If you were doing key animation only, and handing off the keys to be in-betweened by someone else, it's very important to have those charts so that the in-betweener knows what they need to draw.

Cute! Try pushing the posing of the keyframes a little more(more so on the breast when they go upward and downward, exaggerate them to imitate weight) so the audience can understand the impact of her movement. Also, try adding a smear on the jump rope for just a frame, just for fun.

His book is fucking worth it. As a teacher his philosophies on how he breaks down the process like a fucking autist has been very useful, and as much as some people bitch about his "style" his teachings usually avoid that by using basic figures for examples, so it doesnt bring his teachings down. Plus most animation teachers will either pull from him, or start going on some tirade about PHILOSOPHY OF ART or some abstarct shit that dosnt tell a student about the bare essentials, so I havent seen another artist beat him in terms of teaching the medium. The next best thing would be just landing a job and being forced to learn on the spot, so its best to get your feet wet with his book.

However I am of the thought that as an artist, his technique far outweighs some of the actual "art" of his pieces. I feel that his work is best utilized when under the direction of someone else, cause when left to his own devices his goals seem to be about pushing the medium versus actually having a story or message to tell.

if you're half decent and put out work resembling the work you want to make, it's actually a really good market. for example, if you want to make animated music videos, put out pieces that look like music videos / cinematic. if your work is decent and you use appropriate hashtags you'll have people contacting you pretty fast asking for work.

The biggest advice for animation commissions is put out a product, something someone else would commission you for, but do it for yourself. i've had a lot of luck recently doing animated loops which got people asking for me to make them animated album covers, best money i've been making in a long while

come up with a simple arrangement of dots that are easier to manage. if you've designed your characters with the initial intent of animating them, then any randomness like freckles and hair should be planned out for every single view. relying on your rendering skills and nice brushes will not yield good results when it comes to keeping consistently good animation, since great animation comes from the lines and form.
use basic shape markers to help you out rather than trying to inconsistently eyeball it every shot

I feel like making a box/grid connecting some facial features and placing them relative to that would be easier than your pic related. There's nothing to reference and I can't imagine keeping the distances between things consistent over many frames like that.

I did a commission for The Minute Hour that was published today. I think it came off well.

How do you go about your prices for animation comissions? How much money did they pay? And how much time they gave you?

>> No.4908552

Since it was like a minute of half of animation, I asked for two months since I take my time. (I should work harder and faster though) He paid me $500 and while that seems low for professional animators, I think it was fair for the level of commitment. The guy seems pretty chill and I respect that.

That's very low for professional animators, starting salary for a studio job in Canada is a little over $900 a week

That is ridiculously low. Im kind of annoyed its people like you who are making studios believe they can get away with paying animators nothing

For someone who is managing their own channel, I can understand a low rate; Individual youtubers can't pay ridiculous prices for animators no matter how much they deserve a higher pay. Look, I'd love to be paid thousands of dollars for this shit, but no one is willing to put out that kind of money for that kind of work unless you prove yourself on a real professional level. No one is going to pay you thousands of dollars for animation work unless you're popular enough to ensure you'll garner them views.

I understand you're point though. I'm no professional but I maybe could have asked for more and I'd be entitled to it. I just have a feeling, especially with youtube being a cesspit for animation at this point, that most people willing to commission animation are doing the best they can and probably can't afford the kind of rates animators deserve

I think is kind of a fair price, for the quality of that animation they gave anon a lot of time i’ve been in situations where i had to shit out similar things to that video in less than 2 weeks for way less money but that’s because my country isn’t used to hiring animators yet and i was really dumb back then

Honestly it was my first commission and I'm very new to this. Two weeks sounds really short though for a minute and a half but maybe my work eithic is just really terrible. That being said, I might be wrong, maybe I should have asked for more but I dont know.

The main difference between the professional industry and general YouTube work is that the rates are just so vastly apart from one another. Most average YouTube channels with 100k-500k subscribers barely make the amount of money most people expect it would. Websites like Socialblade also exaggerate these numbers into astronomical values because they just go by the raw numbers regardless of whatever individual channel's CPM rates are. This makes it seem like they're earning way more, but they could possibly be making just a fraction of it.
Most YouTube channels can usually afford the bare minimum, and the wages I've seen go from $5/sec-$10/sec. These rates are typically measured in the amount of seconds or minutes the animation rounds up to in the end and doesn't count for individual drawings; so things like holds, 2s, 3s, and camera pans don't matter, just as long as the animation is done.
For example, I've done animation work for Pencilmation, and I've worked at barely 1/4 industry wage. Although I have also animated entire 4 minute shorts for them. The low animation rate makes sense the further you scale the length of the animation itself. Wages in the professional animation industry are calculated by the fact that animators are assigned specific shots and the rates are usually accounted for the shot's length. $50+/sec makes a lot of sense when you're always animating shots that average about eight seconds in length. Whereas a lot of YouTube "studios" could hire a specific animator for an entire short, so the wage is reduced. Working at $50/sec for a 2min-3min short would be an incredibly huge loss on the commissioner.
YouTube work is what it is. It's not industry, so therefore it wont be able to afford industry wages. Although YouTube has slowly become a good place for small online studios to spread their wings and create good animation.

I think Richard Williams is a great animator but his stuff really does look floaty. He likes to put everything on 1's. I think a mixture of 1's and 2's works best. On 3's just looks bad.

Sorry, I didn't mean to be too aggressive with my post, I just wanted to confirm your statement that $500 is fairly low for professional animators. For the client and for the easy going time frame, the price is as reasonable as you are comfortable taking it. It seemed like a fun job, and for what it's worth the video is actually pretty well done, so good on you for that. If it didn't feel like too much work, you just got paid $500 to practice making something
