Finally a thread for Fine-Arts. Nothing beats real paint and people who only have painted digitally have never really painted in the first place imo. This is my most recent work, oils on canvas 30x40
Please advice from a fine-art perspective.

>> No.4861298

>>4861291
This is canvas? Did you prep it yourself or varnish or something? What are the big brush strokes? Looks like gesso on masonite but obviously isn't.

It's an attractive piece from afar, but the anatomy of the face is extremely indefinite. The rendering is blurry, the skin tones are grey and muddy.

If you're just having fun, keep at it! If you're trying to get really good (especially if you ever want to sell a lot of art), you need to step back to drawing and improve a lot from an academic approach before returning to painting.

>> No.4861317

>>4861298
Thanks man, the big strokes are thick layers of gesso that i sanded a bit down to be a bit more smooth.

And thanks for the compliment from it being defined from afar, that's what i try to do, to make a coherent image that collapses in itself when getting closer. If it collapses or defragments in anyway, or changes itself upon further or prolonged viewing, then it's working for me!

>> No.4861320

>>4861291
It’s readable as foliage and human anatomy but the forms of the image aren’t apparent right away. Obviously the foliage is supposed to wrap around her face, but there’s strange moments where it’s hard to tell if what I’m looking at is convex or concave. I know the intent, and portions of it work, you just need to work on execution. Sometimes working in bigger, chunkier forms on a piece can help on pieces where the forms are much more detailed and specific

Draw the figure first. Then focus on the foliage. If I had to guess, it looks like you're hiding what you're bad at drawing.

>"make a coherent image that collapses in itself when getting closer. If it collapses or defragments in anyway, or changes itself upon further or prolonged viewing, then it's working for me!"

This sounds like some coping mechanism shit. Ill grant you that the thumbnail reads, but you should try to paint like you want to make some money, or else you're going to end up like Brian.

Have you seen modern fine-arts? Do you even know which painters are considered the best, not because they draw anatomy correctly, but because the painting tells a story through suggestion with form. Go look at francis bacon and tell me he should paint better anatomy to serve his sinister paintings. A good work can serve its own narrative by NOT obeying the rules. To me, drawing something "correctly" is the thing you do if you can't imagine anything more exciting.

>>4861616
Then you've come to the wrong place, there's a strange toxicity here and no one seem to know anything beyond the obvious, superficial cliches; no openness to that which doesn't fit their respective dogmas or perspectives. In regards to your painting, if you want to create a more 'fragmented' painting that looks coherent from afar, you might want to construct the figure in a similar vein as its surroundings. Avoid such solid panes of singular colours/tones, try a patchwork-like approach when the edges of the face are less rigid and defined - reduce the distinction between background and foreground and let the planes flow into each other and overlap. I'll see if I can find an example that could be useful..

You're not allowed to break the rules until you know them. I remember a young transwoman from college that you remind me of. She would put less than minimal effort into her work and try to come up with excuses not to learn how to draw. Every painting was even less effort as she eventually lost all motivation to improve. Every critique turned into back peddling maneuvers as soon as construction was even vaguely mentioned. She would come into crit with a long speech prepared to defend her work from anyone even mentioning formal qualities. Guess what happens after four years of that. Guess who didn't graduate.

>>4861584

>> No.4864790

I use rapidographs and a crow quill, you can substitute rapidographs for microns, just any technical pen in general. Microns are good but they have a low flow and are disposable so they fade after a couple pictures. Rapidos are incredible but pricier and if you don't use them for a couple days you need to clean them out because they WILL jam. Rotate your page a lot when you use a crow quill and study hatching methods you like a lot and just practice. Dont be afraid to hatch values in, you get very high contrast if you only hatch shadows and contours. Brush is the same thing as a crow quill essentially but more sensitive and the line isnt as tight, if you get good at crow or brush you literally never need another tool for inking lines. I just like technical pens because they stay consistant when youre hatching without any effort, if I need a thicker line I just carve the shape. If youre using a crow quill you need to use a sturdy paper as well because the nib cuts into the paper and the ink flows heavily, so I never use a crow on something like printer paper.

Painting is literally just the art of applying colors or values to a surface to depict a subject, much in the same way that drawing is using lines to depict a subject. If you know how to draw, you should have started your painting with a drawing. Of course we know you're painting a figure, but it doesn't read with your foliage. Maybe that's the point, but out of all the anons that replied to your post, none of them think the painting is currently successful. Just paint the face, then obscure it.

I've been out of university for four years and the most important thing I can tell you is that the best thing you should have learned in college is to teach yourself. Learning from instructors is awesome, but being on your own and banging your head against your own problems and solving them yourself is where the real gains come from. It's good to be confident in your abilities because in this world you have to be, but when kind anons offer good advice with no string attached, listen. We want to see success in each other's work because it validates our own desire for critique among our peers, as fucking awful as most of them are.

Also: The language you're using might fly in art history class / art theory classes, but most people on this board have no idea what half of your terms mean and it doesn't facilitate communication. You sound like you're literally in class, trying to talk some tenured jew into giving you an A for your political leanings. You don't need to impress anyone here, just speak to the layman.

i think you should focus on construction and make sure that your hatching is following the contours of the forms. shadow comes from form blocking a light source so work on lighting the fundamental forms (sphere, cone, box, cylinder), hatching is just creating the illusion of form with binary lines so if you understand how light, value, and form work then you just need to practice layering your hatching and line consistency

It's alright. The body is some risk to draw and I appreciate the effort you put into the hands, but your hatching comes apart at the ends where you transition to using dots. Try leaving them with a lighter mark or using fewer than you have used down the center of the face.

Compositionally, the face being perfectly symmetrical at you seems out of place with how dynamic the pose is. It is unsettling though if that is what you're going for.

nitpicking: your crosshatching feels sketchy where you're overlapping in the neck.

The hair is quite good. It has a sense of volume and weight.

more than one pencil, I use 3H, 2H, F (for getting fine lines, HB, 2B and 8B(for straight black values without too much shine)

use a very sharp point via sandpaper, and cut back your pencil to expose more lead so it's easier to get at angles.

kneaded eraser tapered to a point to remove black spots or to even out values. sometimes it's also easier to use a kneaded eraser to shape blacks into lighter values by removing graphite.

start light and get darker on non-black areas. block-in the absolute black values first and use those as a starting point to push form. use a smaller and skinnier 'x' shape to add value with a pencil instead of just haphazardly coloring.

use something like the Charles Bargue plate PDF for value and form exercises. it helps a lot with recognizing the shape of form through light and how to push form with value

Pro tip: Bottoms of trees do not get covered in snow. It builds up around the drip edge. I know it's too late, but your trees don't really read as trees. I'm making this because i'm trying to write a sci-fi script and in it at some point there is a scene where rebels come to slaughter the inhabitants of a remote village and the main character here has a parasite on his arms, so when he dies the parasite develop to reach the bodies of his fallen comrades and start to "eat" the dead bodies to regenerate the main character who then resuscitates and wake up in the middle of this mess.

When you're just starting, I think it's helpful to make a chart of different mixtures of your paints like in the pic I posted.
As far as medium goes I'd mix one part thinner and one part linseed oil. Use it relatively sparingly, I normally just dip my brush in it and then dip that same brush into whatever paint I'm using and mix it around a bit.
Buy some acrylic gesso (golden brand is the best, but store brands like blick or alt alternatives are fine too) and coat watercolor paper, cardboard, masonite, practically whatever with it a few times and you have yourself a solid painting surface. You can also sand the surface down a bit if you want a smoother surface to work on.
I'd also recommend going to the hardware store and having them cut you a 1/4" pieces of glass at 18"x 24". Put some white foam core underneath it and duct tape the edges and you have yourself a great palette. Much cheaper in the long term than those shitty pieces of palette paper too.

When you're just starting, take it slow, enjoy mixing the paint, getting a feel for what colors do what. Try to break down complex forms into simple shapes, and then ask yourself what color those shapes are. I'd look at some Euan Uglow, Fairfield Porter, or Felicia Forte to see how they break down what they're seeing.

Most of all keep painting, but also keep trying, but also be sure you're practicing and not just mindlessly pumping out paintings.

Cheers

This anon is right, >>4897357, don't try to force it and let the water do the work. It can be frustrating but that's because water is such a volatile medium for painting, the quicker you become aware of this, the easier you will be able to adjust to it.

It helps if you try to paint from loife and with a limited palette. Takes away some of the stress in my experience. Invest in good paper too and don't be afraid to practice on it.
"Normal" paper usually doesn't like getting wet, it will work against you when you are trying to learn, that's why I think it's essential to work with good quality watercolor paper. The paper will be more forgiving without it buckling and pulverizing.
