Bridgman study, crits appreciated

>> No.4881652

>>4881625
Not bad, but I think that you would be better served by A. studies from life and B. learning in depth anatomy before going back and doing studies from Bridgman. I suspect you don't know what some of the structures you're drawing are, so they're coming out vague (where Bridgman is all about the sort of "carved from blocks of wood" specificity).

That said this is a great effort. My primary criticism of the piece itself is the somewhat sloppy rendering. Try to be as clean as you can, and be sure you're doing an accuract construction / lay in before you move onto the smaller anatomical forms.

I think it would look better if the robe is darker than his clothing, it will make his clothing stand out and push your character forward. Try to recolor his robe with Dark shade of blue close to your color scheme, make sure the value is darker than his clothing, just do it on a separate layer and see the results first if it improved.

>> No.4882363

>>4881859
His hands seem like they're in bright white light when everything else looks like its dark and lit in purple, blue, and pink. Fix your light source color for one. Also seconding that you need to darken the cape. Its weird that its brighter than the rest of his clothes even where it should be in shadow. I think you need to put an adjustment layer on top and set it to greyscale. Look at your values, theyre weird and they might be throwing off your colors.

In that light, I think the skin would have more orange in the reflected light within the shaded back area. He looks flat because of your brush work, and maybe that's intentional, but human skin is a soft object, so your coloring will have to be done carefully to look correct. Right now, the figure seems muddy in the shadowed areas, likely because it all seems like one hue. Your color in the sand guy on the left is big dick energy, while your guy on the right is in two-color technicolor.

that's so weird that the lighting on the dinosaur looks better than the guy, the dinosaur was so much easier and the values are so much more limited on it. it probably took me 1/5 the amount of time I spent on the guy. I honestly think you're making a bigger deal out of it than you really need to. Your careful brush work is nice, but lay your colors in quickly and if you have problems, just paint over it. It's important to just paint fast and eat ass. There is no "next try", the whole painting is a try; just make a mess and sort it out later, you're going to make a lot more mistakes by design. That way you're going to take risks you may otherwise stay away from. I think it's great that so many people here try to work from a tight drawing, but I think it can hamper people's ability to push their work as much as they'd like to.

You could push the darks a lot, but mostly the local values of the materials.

Well it looks like daylight almost with that sky but is it being lit by the streetlamp? You could add rim lighting I guess from that lamp. It reads to me tho.

left is more cute/charming, middle has a disdained look and nice color, good personality, my fav. Right is probably the least I like.

>>4886427
They look good but if they are studies you have the reference to check, value/color wise they read, as what can you do better depends on what you are studying, are you trying to learn what exactly? Can't say about the tablet but if you can try one bigger do so, although for line quality probably you might want a screen one.

Leaving some guns I'm working on. I seem to have the issue of making them sometimes look toy-like? I think is the color choice at times (and the forms/detailing).

>> No.4888089

>>4888062
Guns can be any color, and sometimes the color can lead someone to think they might be toys until they get a close look or hold them, but these all look like toys because you're pussyfooting around how to render metal. It looks more like you're rendering plastic water guns.

Have you tried to draw the planes on top of your drawing? You're creating a good illusion of depth with the left eye but the nose and mouth seem like they'd be in a slightly different perspective. The left cheek also is very forward/outward compared to the eye's curve, and the chin has nothing that conveys perspective. This is what might create the "floaty" impression; you're implying depth in the individual features, but the overall head has flat-looking or inconsistent areas.
A lot of it might come down to style, though. You're abstracting a lot of detail, which looks nice, but it means you've got way fewer lines to define the planes with. You might want to experiment with choosing different lines to draw out (you could use something to define the bottom lip/chin, for example, and you might not need both the upper lip and philtrum, the nose might look cuter with less detail, etc).
If you intend to always colour/light your work you can worry less about the lines themselves, though. Lighting is the most efficient way to define planes.

The stuff which will be fun to draw, can come later, right now i rather suffer to go through these painful studies and repetition of drawing :P so it will not get bored anymore but rather just a thing which i already know and can do much faster.

Or do you mean something else?

Since you want crit:
>Anatomy needs a lot of work.
- That right arm cannot physically bend that way, not to mention it's not doing anything for the composition that the hand it just growing out of his back.
-Even if the hand went there, it's facing the wrong way.
-Left hand is having a stroke, I see. Anatomy anatomy. fucking study it.
-Face could be a lot worse. The hardest to look at are the eyes, but anatomically the features line up. (Ears being in the right place, nose lined up where it should.) But your shading all went into the pants and gloves, but not his face to give him more dimension. If you think you're above /beg/ go to the /asg/ since you don't seem interested in actual fundamentals.
-The pants painting looks like he has a front wedgie. I also feel the left legs got an obsessive amount of folding even though his pants are otherwise just fitting him.
-tldr his pants look like the waist is too big and the legs are too long so he had to hoist them up and now looks dumbasf.

You want a redline too, sweetcheeks?

If you really want to get better, go find the asaro head model on Sketchfab and study it.

The asaro head breaks down the human head into a series of simplicistic planes. All human heads, regardless of who they are or what they look like, possess these identical forms. Once you learn to understand and replicate these planes, you will be able to draw anybody.

Yeah, like, I totally see the style you're going for, and I love it, but this kind of illustrative style really benefits from bold, textured brushes that emulate crayons and pencils irl.

Maybe try experimenting with watercolour texture overlays clipped to the top of the art folder. That's what I do when I want to give my stuff more texture but I haven't used a textured brush to draw it.

This is flattering as fuck, but I really don't feel it. It'd be one thing if these were just silly sketches, but in reality they take me HOURS to structure and refine, and I really have no idea if that's normal or not. I wish I had some sort of gauge on what's an average amount of time for most artists creating stuff like this, but I feel like a lot are dishonest about this aspect of their art.

Do you have any suggestions for incorporating more solid lines in my work though? I've had the flowy thing pointed out as criticism before, but it's a habit I'm not entirely sure how to break.

The likeness, poses and expressions in your drawing are super well done. tells a nice story. (ignore my poor pose/expression/likeness etc. im too autistic for that)
Dont see this as a direct improvement btw, just a few directions to look at. (The way i wouldve solved those problems).

I think the main problem youre facing is, the guesswork youre basing your lines on when unsure about structure.
Maybe a good exercise would be (what i would do), to try to convert a photo into linework and really make the forms read.
Thinking about lineweight and where maybe NOT placing a line can convey information better than actually placing it.

(And about the time thing: id not worry too much. youll get faster as you get more experienced)

I think it's a remnant from when I used to do lineart traditionally, but was a little bitch kid who refused to study anatomy because it was "boring", so relied on drawing outlines of forms instead. Now I have more knowledge under my belt, but the loose, bubbly habit of relying on unstructured outlines is still there. For a while I thought it was important I try to put as much movement into my lines as possible, but all the movement in a piece won't work without a solid structure to leap out from.

Thanks a lot for pointing this out to me anon, I appreciate it. Probably take a while to correct it but at least I'm aware of the problem now.

I really dislike drawing backgrounds, I usually go for flat colours. I slapped this background out in a few minutes because I just dislike doing it. Any advice on backgrounds for someone who almost solely draws figures?

Don't soley draw figures? Also perspective should be a foundation.
Your drawing looks like it's on a stage with the camera directly in front of it.
Draw the ground. People and things don't float in space unless you're drawing them in space.

Been working on this big fella, wondering what I can fix in both my drawing and values before transitioning into color?

Working on this. I haven't decided on the background yet. Also I might change the colors a bit so that it reads better. Here are three versions
