4882977 No.4882977 [Reply] [Original]

This is a thread to discuss all kinds of digital drawing hardware: non-display graphics tablets, pen display tablets, portable tablets and more.

>What should I buy?
State your:
>Budget
>Location
>Type (display? non-display? portable?)
>Size (in inches)
>Other information
>Previous equipment

If you have any additional questions, ask them.

>Recommended tablets:

Intuos Pro 2013 - Great value, and the nibs won't wear out in 5 seconds like they do on the newer model.
Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite - Budget portable display tablet. Very solid drawing experience with Wacom EMR tech.
Used iPad Pro 2nd Gen 12.9" - Best option for a display tablet.
Used Cintiq 22HD - The only worthwhile large display tablet
Wait for the Galaxy Tab S7+

>Avoid:

Cintiq Pro - Terrible value. The drawing experience might be good, but you're paying way too much for an unreliable product. Dead pixels are frequent, as are black screens of death.
Microsoft Surface Pro - The N-Trig digitizer means you will always get wobbly lines.
Huion, XP-Pen, Gaomon and every other Chinese brand - Poor build quality, lackluster pens, bad tilt, horrible customer support and the displays are not calibrated. All Chinese brands are basically the same because they're all centralized. Also watch out, Chinese Companies are known to shill aggressively, even on 4chan.
Lenovo - Bad drawing performance.

-$500, hopefully less
-Chile
-Display, portable, can connect to my laptop
-I want it to be portable so I can draw comic pages while sitting at a café or something like that, but that it's compatible with my windows laptop for when I have to do heavy digital painting that requires some editing that's easier to do with mouse+hotkeys
-I'm using a non display huion which keeps disconnecting non stop

Keyboard isn't mandatory, however I also use targus flip cover + keyboard for my S6 Lite which I mainly use when working on other things like writing and shitposting. You've got an explanation on XP-Pen in the OP. It's Chinese garbage and you're going to have some kind of issue, whether it be line wobble, harsh tapering, bad tilt or whatever.

The parallax on the iPad is nearly non existent and the pen helps hide whatever there might be. XP's has a bit more but it's nearly unnoticeable. Ive been using both for long enough that I don't notice but I know it can be jarring to some not to get their 1:1.

DESU my iPad is dated so if the new ones and the new penicls are better, you might have to go for it, bro.
I have I think the 2018 9.7 version. Solid, still kicking. Paid $300 for it and the pencil at Best Buy here in Trumpland.
Not gonna defend Xp too hard since they are who they are: cheap; but I do think the nibs on each determine how much parallax you see while drawing, versus off center pictures i take to show distance - if that makes sense.
if I can figure out how to get the video from my phone I can post that for you so you can see what I mean about the perception of angles.

Other than that, 100% recommend trying to borrow a friends iPad or play with one in an electronic store or even the Amazon Return thing to give it a go. I don't use mine much because Apple hasn't gone over a 3kMa Battery in 20 years so it dies fast and theres no indicator for when the Pencils battery is dying, but Procreate, Nomad Scuplt, and Sketchbook are flawless on it.

This is my 3rd Xp in 7 years I think. I got it to replace a dif display of theirs I broke and I've got a backup screenless so I can keep working if the big guy craps out on me. They're solid but not for everyone.

While drawing recently my pen has been making extra lines when it hasn't before when all I had to do was lift it lightly to get to the next part of the drawing. I haven't changed the settings or have done anything differently.

pic related, I've also noticed when I'm on the color wheel changing colors and tap for the one I want it still has a hold on the bar and doesn't let go and still moves. Might be the tablet itself though and not the pen, it's an Intous cth-690, had it for 4 years

Wacom sadly doesn't make anything display in your budget range. Alternatives would be the Huion Kamvas 13 or the XP Artist Pro line that has their 12 and 13" displays within your budget. If you order of Amazon and it's not to your liking you can return it. I'd really suggest saving the extra 100 for the 15.6 models as the size will be very comfy comparatively.
Next rec would be a second hand iPad and compatible Apple Pencil. It's great because it's an all in one and you can be lazy with it as well as having a long list of accessories to make it extra comfy like the Paperlike screen protectors. The investments for the appple stuff are only worth it if you're planning on using it often and mostly for art, but if you're not interested in their proprietary peacemealing, wacom alternatives would be better.

microsoft and apple would prefer someone using a pirate copy of their os than a non-pirate linux user. why? not only because they can take info from the users, but because a different common person would never know that the copy of a coworker is a pirate version.

so another issue is about supporting indirectly the brand. if you dislike a brand from abusing consumers trust, you should avoid using it, no matter if a product is second hand or "free".

What's a good general companion tablet for on the go and drawing?
I don't want to spend an arm and a leg, but laminated screens and good contrast and color accuracy are really nice, as is a fast CPU and long battery life. "Can it run Dolphin?" is pretty much my performance (and renderer compatibility) benchmark for mobile devices these days.

Not buying S6 lite with that TFT screen, it's not the noughties anymore as far as I can tell. Windows is peace of mind, as I can do much more with a Windows device, but God are they expensive.

Pic related lists some considerations.

Pretty appalling how little information you can find on the Samsung nibs. I was looking if S6 replacement nibs exist. Apparently Samsung does not offer them, and the Chinese knockoffs off Amazon and Aliexpress can break inside and ruin the pen. I had to find that out form R***** threads. Maybe some Wacom nibs will work, I sure can't find any confirmation on that.

So the Galaxy pens are basically not meant for heavy use, let alone longevity? Also not sure for how many years (or months) the replacement pen itself will be available.

>What do you think of the S6 Lite, Anon? Is it better than Chinesium too?
Easily. I have one myself. The S-Pen uses Wacom tech, so you'll get nice, consistent linework and working tilt. Also Android has a great app called superDisplay that lets you use the tablet as a display tablet for Windows, which is really easy to setup.
The downside compared to the S7+ is smaller 10.4" size and no OLED display. OLED isn't that important for drawing tablets, unless you really crave the perfect contrast.

>> No.4908111

S7+ is triple the price, so I think I can sacrifice a few bits and bops that won't really effect me all that much. Thanks for the shill, Anon. I needed some confidence before I made this purchase, even though I'm a chad.

How's the screen quality? I dig reading the odd comic book on my iPad 2, but it's 9 years old at this point so it's showing its age.

>> No.4908164

>>4908111
Not the anon you replied to. I have the S4 and the S7+
The S4 would be at least as good as the S6 - it's perfectly fine for most comics. Some that are based on larger comic sizes, aren't perfect but quite nice in general. Though even on the S7+ I can tell it's still not as good as having the real thing. Mainly ones that are slightly over A4 in size if you bought the paper ones.
Challenge Viewer is what I recommend (free) for your comic reader.

Honestly, I'd not bother with the S7+ if you're not interested in having a book/pdf splitscreened with a note taking app and even then, it's doable just sometimes a bit awkward depending on the pdf app you have. It goes back to the idea of a book that would be quite large has more text per page so it's harder to read in split screen

Redpill me and QRD me on the S7+.
Is it as good as a Wacom? Is there a reason to get the S7+ over a Cintiq?

>> No.4908792

>>4908776
The Samsung represents better value for money, has far better build quality, is significantly less prone to defect or failure and has an objectively better display, being OLED.

The Cintiq has a better pen, and can have a larger display depending on how much money you're prepared to spend. Large 22+" display can be important if you value drawing with your shoulder, like if you do frequent sketching for 2D animation.

Here's my dilemma. I am used to painting with my Intuos 4 medium. The drawing surface is 10.5 inches, but I am looking at a 27 inch 1440p monitor while I paint.

The S7+ is 12.4 inch, so it's bigger drawing area than Intuos 4 medium, but since I'm used to looking at the 27 inch screen while drawing, is that going to fuck me up?
I feel like I'd have a hard time adjusting to a smaller screen.

Also, what are the painting apps like on Android?

>> No.4908813

>>4908804
I don't see how that could be an issue. Does it really matter how big the display you're looking at is? You're still drawing on a 10.5" display, and your hand movements on a 12.4" will be somewhat similar. Also, you can actually use the Galaxy as a non-display tablet anyway with Virtualtab.

>Also, what are the painting apps like on Android?
Mediocre, but getting better.
Clip Studio recently came out and is free for 6 months. It's as powerful a software as you will ever need.
Infinite Painter is good, but buggy.
Krita came out a few months back, but still needs to be optimized for tablets.
Ibis Paint and Medibang are pretty good, particularly for the comic workflow.
Sketchbook is solid, but not getting feature updates anymore since it went free.

Overall it still loses to iPad in the app department thanks to Procreate and ArtStudio Pro. Android apps are still solid though. One big advantage it has over Appleshit is superDisplay, which lets you use the tablet as a desktop display tablet for Windows, and works really well.
