Whe and why did anime become so degenerate and boring in subject matter with time? What happened to quality shows in both content and art style like Zeta Gundam, Saint Seiya or Lodoss War? Anime wasn't that much different at all from western media back in the 80s, but now literally everything is weeb shit

I saw some post on /a/ the other day where people on some message board in 1993 were complaining about Salior Moon and how it ruined animu

Good question. Everyone knows what you're talking about but I don't think you'll get a good answer. I don't think it's nostalgia either.
All recent stuff just feels like trash. I recently watched the cowboy bebop movie because I hadn't seen it, and it was the first time in a while I actually really enjoyed a movie. Like I actually had good vibes after watching it. Much more enjoyable than shit like Tenet or Once upon a time in Hollywood or whatever.
Anyone feel me? Give me a (you) lets talk about this.

Western shows are painfully slow slice-of-life "comedies"
Anime is isekai

Anime has a pussy-ass protagonist. I don't understand how or why any sensible otaku would want to relate to some spineless twig.

Anime is brought and paid for by weebs alone these days, hense why it only caters to them. Just watch the old shit and grieve like the rest of us.

Every character is a blindly hardheaded asshole wearing their failures as a badge of honor in American media and I'm sick of it.

It's the money. It's a general trend actually. The same holds true for movies and video games. The standards of the consumer go up, and therefore more effort, eg money, needs to be put into it. So taking risks in general is discouraged. Making a top of the line game now is much more expensive then a decade ago. Just because standards on graphics have gone up. Similarly the same thing has occurred with animation. Animation in japan has always been on poor financial ground. But it's gotten worse as standards have gone up. Look at how ridiculously good studios like kyoani are, now imagine you need to compete with that. Under these circumstances, where some return is not even close to guaranteed, they choose to take the easier route. And thus, the otaku live. Many studios get most of their income from sales to them, things like box sets and merchandise. It's pretty easy to entice them as well, just draw cute girls and have them do suggestive things. You don't even need to think about it, just copy some stereotypes that are proven to work, do the standard stuff like beach episodes, and you're golden.

But I like cutie moe stuff as much as the stuff you mentioned...it never gets old
