Pretty good. That is worth 2 food. The proportions on the non-dagger arm seem a bit off though, and I don't think the hands are quite the same size.

>>4886644
Not bad anon. You need more work with foreshortening. The hand coming out towards the viewer needs to be larger to communicate this. Having the bent leg be completely parallel to the picture plane looks strange, so you can definitely give her more life by allowing her body to twist a bit.

So try to give her more gesture. Scan through the Force gesture book for some inspiration, and get some refs of hands and legs coming out towards the viewer, and practice it.

Sounds boring but with practice you’ll find it fun and useful.

Don’t neglect drawing good feet, even if they look like shoes, draw them well.

How can I get better at doing things faster? It literally took me about an hour and a half to get to this point in the process. Obviously speed increases as technical skill increases which increases with practice over time. But are there specific things I can work on?

>> No.4886702

>>4886694
Well, her legs aren’t long enough and you’ve made her thighs too thick and round. Look for break planes at the pelvic bone so that you give her more solid structure.

>> No.4886703

>>4886694
actually, pay more attention to your basic structure. Ribcage, hips, etc. Things are getting a little wonky there. Build a box around each major mass if needed. Proko's "mannequinization" exercise is unironically helpful here

>> No.4886704

>>4886694
Oops, to address your original Q, if you focus on getting a good block in and forego doing details like facial features and hands, you can quickly get figures down. So ignore these things. Just focus on good proportions and use some construction method like boxes for pelvis and torso so that you start to build a library of body wedging shapes/volumes in your head

Thank you. I'm just using the image as a ref more than a direct copy but actually now I'm noticing the leg length in particular doesn't look right. do you have an inherent sense of aesthetics and a knowledge of visual ideas that you like? do you know what concepts, images, ideas, you find “cool” or “beautiful”? just try to create things in line with that, stuff you yourself want to see. if its tough power through it, it won’t be perfect, itll probably be really ugly because of your lack of technical skill, but youll learn something and develop your own personal style.

Just draw what inspires you, favorite characters, shows, or copy your favorite artists. Don't wait because you're "not good enough", that is a trap mindset, because it is a fact that your standard will gradually changing overtime, you will never be good enough to your own standard, even until the day you die.
Grinding for many hours daily will create a comfort zone for you, a fail sense of "progress", that is a hurdle many /beg/s will never cross.

There is, this is a good way to learn more about colours. This also makes it obvious that you're not pushing your dark values far enough (compare your dark trees in both paintings to the refs, they're not as dark as they should be). Your hue/saturation choices are pretty good, though I think some of your shadows are too desaturated (particularly in the left image, the ref has saturated green shadows that create a nice contrast to the orange light; your shadows are too gray).
You can also use this type of study to experiment with brushes/edges. You've got good variations in opacity but you'd benefit from using some textured brushes in some areas.

Last week I've decided to start learning art seriously and picked up a drawing tablet (a simple, small wacom)

So far I'm having a really rough time drawing with a tablet. When drawing on a paper my art skill is simply lacking, but when I do it on a tablet I feel like a drunk 5 year old. I simply don't "feel" what my pen is doing or going to do, and I don't "feel" the shapes and forms on the screen the way I feel them on the paper.

Been bashing my head against this for 3 days now - am I missing something important or do I just need to grind more hours and that's it?

Strange thing I noticed is that if I use the simple microsoft paint I actually get much better feel for the lines and forms that I draw, not sure why.

Good.

Put a bunch of objects in front of you, preferably next to a window with sunlight coming through it, and draw them as you see them. Create an outline out of objects using straight lines, no curves even if you have a cup or a mug or a mouse or whatever.

Next, look at where the shadows are. Block those in too, both shadows on the objects and the casted shadow on the table. Similar deal, straight lines.

Shade in the shadows with some nice dark and even tone, and compare what you did. Pay attention to your angles and placement of whatever - is the cup tipping over too much? Is the handle not in the right place? etc etc. Fix these mistakes, and then get more objects and do the same.

Literally grind these objects to your heart's content, and then move onto photo references when you're sick of that.

The sticky is horrible, the upside down example makes sense in a different context (seeing abstract shapes as they are). Placing it at the start of the sticky, however, was a stupid fucking thing to do.

Draw stuff around the house, read up on how to sharpen your pencil, get a nice big fat paper block (18x24) of nice smooth paper, and just go to town.

Post your shit once you're done.

Not sure what "rules" and "techniques" you're referring to but observational drawing is about copying what your eye (or eyes) see. Usually people choose to close one eye to prevent bifocal errors from showing in the perspective of the drawing, but anyway...

What's the use of copying? By itself nothing. The drawing as a drawing doesn't have any value. But it has bigger implications for you.

You can't draw something that is out there in the real world without having a good idea of what it looks like. More complex things are usually made up of many simpler things, so learning how simple things look, plus learning how they are combined, is pure magic.

You can look at something and kind of try to remember it and draw it at some later time - and this is a valuably skill called memory training - but the most guaranteed method of having it stick is to draw it as soon as you can, while it's in front of you and you can figure it out.

Underneath all of this, by drawing what you see in the real world rather than from a photo, you're developing your sense of how perspective looks to a human, rather than to a camera with lens distortions.

Drawing eventually becomes "easy" and rote, so then the challenge is to find shit you want to express and your own way of expressing it rather than simply copying what you see. At that point, you're well on your way to being /int/.

Makes sense. By rules and techniques i'm referring to the differences to the drawing styles. Observational or traditional drawing seems to be more "free" when it comes down to drawing, as in the most important thing is drawing what you see and so most of it's "rules", or the way you're supossed to do thing lie in observing, whereas usually, when you draw "regularly" you're aiming to make a good drawing per example good linework, clean drawing, etc. I probably already answered the question myself. Wanted to know -why- the style or emphasiz previously mentioned is so different between the two previously mentioned "styles.

Continue to do Dynamic Sketching stuff but don't get caught up in trying to construct before using your judgement. These aren't opposing things though.

I think what you might be referring to is seeing all those observational figure drawings that look like dogshit thinking that's how they are supposed to look like, whereas in reality it's mostly that the artist never bothered practicing tight linear work and doesn't know how to pull it off, and hasn't really done much work aesthetic work with lines.

If you take someone like Vilppu as an example, his drawings I guess would fall into the "traditional" thing you refer to, they very often don't really follow the reference, but the line work is intentional and calligraphic. He's using line weight as language.

So it's not a this-or-that sort of thing, at least not to me. It's this AND that.

I would fix the perspective first. Rendering is about making your scene look believable in a 3d space and there's too many things not making sense rn that would result in a polished turd. Draw some perspective lines and check the landmarks and curvature of your subjects.
Or just fucking go ahead and render it anyway at least you're posting work and finishing pieces

Make sure you supplement drawing from photo refs with drawing from life, because the distortion in that photo is fucking wild.

Now for the crit.

Over all head proportion and jaw line looks good, maybe slightly overstated but that's fine.

Biggest thing to focus on at the moment is the line quality. Make sweeping lines rather than short strokes. Use your forearm and your elbow when you're drawing. If you need to, get a bigger pad of paper like 18x24 inch, and rehearse drawing a line from one corner to the other in one motion, not too fast not too slow.

There's a shitton more to comment on, but one thing at a time. It's better to get the mechanics out of the way first that way i'm not telling you to fix the face when you don't even know how to make proper marks.

It’s a decent start but you need to work on keeping the perspective consistent. The ears are too high up on the head compared to the angle of the face, the crotch is drawn more like you’re looking down at it when it, which is inconsistent with the rest of the body.
