Does someone have videos o twitch channels of background artists (interiors if possible) ?. I'm trying to learn to make isometric backgrounds in 'anime style' but they all come out like a random frame of some minimalistic game like the witness or untitled goose game. You need to understand the goal of the exercise. The goal isn't to get it exactly right. The goal is to understand the difference that happens when you draw what you see vs. mapping symbols (i.e. you see an actual eye, so you just paste in a beginner style eye symbol rather than engaging with the actual visible shape of the feature).

Once you understand the difference between drawing what you see and drawing symbols, you can move on to the other exercises.

I think they kinda help with the first 1/4 of drawing a figure because it is the hardest section of drawing-- you're drawing on a blank page. Gestures are a foundation you build upon for the following steps so you have to get it real solid.
I do think they put too much emphasis on time than getting a gesture pose right though and there's more a chance that it will build bad habits. I think it's better to get those gestures right no matter how slow you are because you're going to get faster in the long term anyway.

I am left with a dilemma. I want to make appealing art. I /can/ make appealing art. But. It. Takes. So. Long.

The dilemma: I have spent 30 minutes drawing out a few fast and loose sketches and picked one I like. Now what? Do I keep sketching in the hopes I can train myself to create a sketch of the same level in 20 minutes? 10 minutes? Or do I take the drawing to completion or near completion and produce a (semi) polished product. Which requires 5-10 hours of drawing on top of my sketch, redrawing on top of that drawing, going to sleep and waking up and realizing I totally fucked up the perspective and anatomy and restarting from scratch... All in the hopes to optimize my "polishing" phase from 5-10 hours down to 2-3?

This is what I can't figure out and I also can't figure out if other artists have this problem. Sometimes I get told I'm insane for spending so much time on a noncolored drawing and other times people tell me it's normal

I've seen some anime backgrounds drawn on top of real life pictures but, it should be possible to do it just from imagination. Besides that, it would be hard to find a real life picture of the kind of room I want to make and with the correct reflections, mainly because I want to 'draw' a room lit both by natural and artificial sources and isometric. In regard to perspective, I'm using a base-model I made in blender, but the lighting ... it looks good, but not 'anime-style' which is what I want to achieve. I'll just finish the room without caring how the lighting looks and then see how it looks with 'anime' characters in it, I'll see.

He right arm is a bit too long, I think. If she stood up straight it would extend well below her hips. Left is more or less okay I think. Maybe you can look up some photos of left handed shooters for reference.

Work on drawing first before rendering. Your ball is wider than it is tall and your cylinder looks flat, look for how to draw cylinders in perspective. Your shadow shape is horizontal but the ref has a slight downward tilt in the opposite direction of the light source.

As for your rendering, it looks like you are using a mixture of a round brush + a shape selection tool + the smudge tool, so there's some clashing of styles going on. Try using just the brush for a start.

You can do without that. The point is to imagine what you see as it would appear on the format of the paper you're using. Try making a rectangle with your fingers.
The only benefits would be the crosshairs would tell you what's exactly in the middle, making it a bit easier. But I did the exercises without it because fuck that shit.

as the other anon said, your drawing is off. the perspective is wrong. you need to fix the elipses on the top and bottom faces of the cylinder. but your sphere is also squished to be wider than it is tall. so thats both shapes that are off. when it comes to values, look at the thumbnail. the table on your sketch is not as bright as the reference. thats the most obvious, but you also got a bit too dark in the top right of the ball, you didn't draw the reflections of the windows, and you're using the wrong tools. youre not acheiving the gradient the way you should. you gotta just practice with the spray tool or idk what program youre using but you gotta figure out the right tools and brushes to use.
