This is a thread to discuss drawing hardware.

>What should I buy?
500$ - Intuos Pro
100$ - Xp Pen Deco Pro
50$ - Deco 01/HS611/HS610

If you have any questions, ask them.

>Avoid:
*Wacom NON-PRO.
Rebranded Bamboos and crippled cut down displays. If you can't afford pro you can't afford Wacom.
Their budget offerings are a scam you just pay for a brand name but get shit product.
*Surface/Lenovo/yoga/whatever.
just bad pen performance.
*Any mobile devices that aren't Apple or Samsug.
Only these two brands have a servicable pen good enough to draw anything.
*Old Model chinese tablets.
They have some really confusing naming schemes and you might get a seriously obsolete device if you don't pay attention and do some research.
*The local /pol shizo.
Just tell him to post his work because he's not a real artist.

Nope. Nobody knows shit about them.
My bet is that it's the same exact Huion made at Ugee but with a different coat of paint and nobody knows about their drivers.

As for the pen you can tell whether it's good by the kind of nibs it uses.
Go to the huion website and check, the old nibs that wobble around are thick short and have a hole in them. The new nibs that feel tight and don't wobble are thin, long and don't have a hole.

If the pen uses no-hole nibs it's going to feel better to draw with, no wobble and a better pressure curve.

As far as I understand the chinks made it simply to avoid having to hand tune each pen at factory so they made a minimal threshold that cuts off some minimally light pressure. I heard some rumors the latest Huion pen doesn't have it but I personally can't confirm.

The pens themselves might come tuned differently. It might either be way too stiff and only activate after you pressed a lot or jump from zero straight to 20%, one guy on youtube even got a pen that always draws without pressing.

It's actually about the tuning screw inside the pen enclosure, I tuned my own pen and it feels fucking great to use, some minimal feather light pressure is still required before it wakes up but honestly it's not an issue at all.

I think the people who complain might have the stiffly tuned pens.

My previous tablet was a H610 V2. Ive hopped between screenless and display tablets several times, however the only displays ive tried before were xp pen ones from years ago and I was never happy about the colour accuracy. I was going to try the huion kamvas pro 22 but then I saw this one being released with 140% gamut and 1:1200 contrast ratio, and since colours are more important to me than anything else I went for it.

So far im very happy with it, driver installation was simple and went without issue. Im still getting used to the pen since screenless pens are a lot more sensitive, but I can definitely already work with it. I did however buy it from amazon, simply because theres always the huion meme risk and I want to be able to return it if thigs go wrong but so far its great.

I doubt it. There's literally nothing to break in them. The older models had a shitty micro usb that had issues, the new ones come with a rock solid usb-C that will outlive you.
>Deco Pro
Deco Pro small - just shouldn't exist.
Deco Pro Medium is actually equal to Intuos Large and has a sexier pen with a nib that doesn't wobble as much. The pressure sensor in it is slightly better and it actually has zero diagonal jitter like an Intuos pro.

Not sure whether the new huions have it or not, but my Deco Pro certainly doesn't, I tested with a ruler.

Not that asshole, but I gotta say that I don't get the nib wear thing. Yeah, they'll wear down after 2-3 days of heavy use at first, but once the surface is broken in after 4-ish of the 10 included nibs, the wear slows down dramatically to 1 nib every few weeks.

Even if it ate nibs as quickly as everyone seems to think, they cost a dollar. You're going to spend way more than that on traditional materials for the same amount of drawing, and you get a much more comfortable paper-esque surface feel due to the increased friction.

I upgraded from a dinky huion tablet and while the nib wear is a lot higher, I feel like I have much more control thanks to the rougher surface. I'll gladly pay a few bucks for replacement nibs if it means my drawing experience is nicer. Personal preference, I guess.

All of their patents have expired and the technology has already been developed to full potential so the chinks can rival their best offerings on paper thin margins for 20% of the price.

And the Chinks are getting bolder too. Look at Huion they are confident enough to launch a 1000$ 1440p tablet with no compromises, full bonded etched glass on a pro-tier display panel.

2 years ago users would say
>well it has a battery pen and a wonky driver but it's a good deal for 60$
Today the users complain about the activation force, which means they ran out of significant problems to complain about.

If next year they iron out the mininal force threshold and introduce pen rotation wacom might just pull out of the drawing tablet market entirely and go make the smartphone shit.

Also, for those who use the inputs on their larger display for their mouse and keyboard did you go wireless with a new m/k or just kept your wired setup? I own this tablet. It's been fantastic for me, especially for the price point. It's big, it doesn't weigh a ton, and it has a big display that replicates color and has pressure sensitivity of the best Cintiqs I've seen. It doesn't get very hot either, and 99% of the time mine is being used as a 3rd monitor.

My only regret is that I bought it before they announced the Pro 22, which I would love to own. But you can't beat this thing for the price. I'd much rather spend $400 on a screen tablet than just a normal Wacom.

>> No.4866095

You won't really harm the screen, but you might wear away the pen nib, which happens and it's why they give you a bunch of extras in the pen base. Obviously don't dig in or try to gouge out the screen, though. You shouldn't need to press very hard to get max pressure and you can always adjust the pen settings so you get max pressure with less force so you don't have to feel like you're digging into the surface. Like anything, it's practice.

Huion pens aren't great. I've had 2 different tablets from them and the tablet is alright, worst thing about it has to be the micro USB since those are just not sturdy ports to begin with but if youre gentle with them or get one with usb-c you're fine. I've had a few pens just shipped to me broken (like the nib was physically jammed into the pen and I couldn't get it out, another just didn't fucking work at all) and they feel very delicate, like you need to be extra gentle with them. You kind of have to know what all that fluffy business speak shit means but basically wacom is focusing on making their production costs as low as possible to maximize their profits, and they are kicking out anyone on their board that disagrees with that. Its pretty obvious that they're not focusing on quality anymore.

>All of their patents have expired
No, not all. If you look them up on patent websites you'll see that they still actually hold some patents, but they for sure have lost some very important ones (like EMR for batteryless pen).

On the chinks vs wacom and cost of manufacturing, I actually think they cost around the same to manufacture these days. Wacom has been opting for cheaper and cheaper parts for their tablets. Being 100% profit driven, it make sense that they'd cheap out and keep the price tag high so they can make even more money on these tablets.

And yeah the chinks are catching up. Honestly, I'm really sick of wacom, they had so many years of no competition where they asserted themselves as tablet king. Now they're just using that good reputation and brand name recognition to sell horrible quality shit. I'd love to see any other company surpass wacom and become the new industry standard. DESU Pen tilt already has very limited use cases, not that it's useless, but most artists don't bother with it and the brushes get too complicated. A few years back I bought a tablet, following /ic/ recommendations. It's a Huion 1060pro+. Ever since I haven't used it for reasons. One thing I remember clearly is it was super important to download new drivers for the tablet.

So I want to use it and went to download new drivers now and I'm having trouble. First, they don't have that specific model in their website. Second, I downloaded the ones which I think would be closest and when I try to install them (on Windows 7) I get an error saying it's impossible to install.

Am I fucked? Sorry I don't know much about computers

I have one, and I have two issues
One is that the calibration doesn't seem to account for tilt properly, so the point at which your pen meets the screen can never be calibrated to be consistently under the tip of your pen
The other is that the tilt itself is fucky, like it's not a smooth 360 degrees, at certain angles it kind of jams, it's hard to explain but my old intuos does not have this problem

A few days ago I bought a Wacom Intuos Pro and my first impression was that I wasted my money. Screenless tablets were more uncomfortable than I expected. I wondered if I could return it and buy instead an XP Artist screen tablet, either the 15.6 Pro or the 22. At the end, I decided to keep my Wacom and I think I have improved since the first day. But I might take into account those XP screen tablets in the future.

Amazon literally doesn't give a shit, its great. You get a tablet thats fucked right out of the box, you can just immediately request an exchange or return and send it back. Amazon has a 30 day no questions asked return for any reason policy. I just took my tablet to a UPS store (that was the shittiest part of the process due to covid there are long lines and they don't let many people in the store at once) and let them scan a QR code amazon sent me, they took the tablet box and packed it, slapped a label on it, sent it off. Meanwhile from the second I requested an exchange a new one was on the way. If you don't return the faulty tablet before a certain amount of time after getting the new one they charge you for both so just make sure you send off the broken one ASAP and you've got no worries.

Its really easy and I trust Amazon with this shit more than huion. On the fucked up tablet from Amazon I tried talking with huion support about it first and they argued with me from the beginning and told me to stop hamfisting the tablet (the nib was jammed in the stylus before i even opened the box). This brings up a very good point that I've never seen anyone mention:
Most XP-Pen's drivers only have 4 point calibration. That's all you get, just 4 points to account for tilt, viewing angle, and very loose manufacturing tolerances. I've historically seen 9-point calibration as an option for some XP-Pen devices, but mine (innovator 16) only has 4. Compare this to Wacom's 16 point with extra focus on the edges.
That means you'll always have cursor drift and that it will always be especially bad around the edges. Yes, I know cursor drift is no big deal cerebellum ...etc but that's bullshit. You bought a display for a reason, otherwise why not buy a screenless?

The tuning screw will help with IAF, but it won't change anything about the drift.
Also you failed to mention that twisting the tuning screw is a harsh tradeoff. If you tune the screw, you can't use the pen to click UI elements anymore, since it thinks you're always pressing down. Very few people would be okay with this exchange.

You're not supposed to tune it that far.

Xp-Pen pens might come with either too sensitive or not sensitive enough setting and that's what you refine with the screw.

The proper setting is to still have some minimal IAF but not too much and not constant pressure.

The screw itself is not analog, there are quantized steps to how much it changes the activation. You can't refine it with infinite precision.
Your only way of getting good IAF is to just barely overtune it and then adjust the curve accordingly. Anything less and you don't actually get better IAF at all.
The classical test is of course to just let the pen draw with its own gravity. There is no middle ground to achieve this without losing the ability to use the UI.

>The screw itself is not analog,
I'm pretty sure it is, pic related is the Deco Pro pen.
The pen looks to be made out of entirely passive electronic components, there's no digital controller chip or processor in there.

It's the tablet firmware that probably cuts off some minimal pressure simply to rule the need to manually tweak each pen on the factory. If they didn't some pens would come constantly drawing out of the box.

The way i tuned the pen it detects 100 pressure levels if you just put it vertically and i'm really comfy with it. It still has some IAF but it's low and i;m used to it.

In future the chinks could actually fix this by making the tablet firmware calibrate itself the moment when the pen gets into it's actually touching the surface.
>nothing
>the pen is first tetected near the tablet
>get the pressure value it's transmitting
>this value is equal to 0 pressure level

I really hope the Ugee engineers are intelligent enough for this.

Yeah analog wasn't the right word sorry. I just mean it does seem like it goes in steps. And it's fucking hard to turn the screw, let alone precisely. I'm not a fucking electrician, but I'm not a spastic either. I'm pretty delicate, and it is not as easy as you make it sound. If you figured out a way to get it to activate with its own gravity without being so sensitive that it autoclicks, I'd love to see it.
Anyway, I don't even mind the IAF being high. My main point is that nothing you can do to the pen will prevent cursor drift, that's a software thing.
Someone figured out how to calibrate the older Surface Pro with over 100 point calibration and it basically eliminated drift.

I'm sure it is. I use a way older model (Tab A6) and it's perfectly capable to handle (admittedly light) stuffs like bust-up commissions and storyboarding. Now that it has CSP it should be even more capable, maybe even for making full-blown comic pages

Thanks! I'm thinking to switch to tablet for portability, but I was worried about buying older devices and not be able to run it smoothly. It's good to know it runs well on older model too. I wonder if it's worth to grab S6 lite, or perhaps a cheaper one like Tab A8 with S Pen?

>If you figured out a way to get it to activate with its own gravity without being so sensitive that it autoclicks, I'd love to see it

How am I supposet to show it?
I have a tiny little screwdriver that fits that little screw and I was carefully tweaking it

If I turn it too far clockwise it becomes way too stiff
If I turn it too far counterclockwise it's too sensitive and detects about 600 pressure levels right after IAF.
So i tweaked it so the cut off point is at roughly 100 pressure levels.

Press your pen as lightly as you possibly can and try and find the cutoff pressure.

Uhhh, if you're talking about CSP, unfortunately it's only gonna run on galaxy S6 and up
Tab A8's looks decent hardware wise, but 8" screen is tiny though. Not sure if it's gonna be comfortable to draw on

>> No.4872854

>>4872847
ah, I see. Indeed it looks cramped to draw on it. Although I know someone who draws on CSP using Tab A8.

This shit is so overwhelming. Why are there so many fucking options. Me me just want a large screenless tablet. I use a intuos medium currently, but I feel the serpent on the branch coaxing me to dip my toe into the degeneracy of display tablets.

>> No.4872943

>>4872918
Just keep in your mind that, if you can already draw with a regular tablet, a display tablet won't give you any advantage at all (in fact it's gonna give you disadvantages because it's way less ergonomic than a slate tablet, it will strain your body faster and your productivity will suffer as a result)

I want to get used to screen tablet, should I just buy a medium size screen tablet like XP Pen Artist 15.6 Pro or android tablet like Galaxy S6 lite?

>> No.4873254

>>4873198
ultimately your choice of tool depends on what you personally want. If you want a small display, go for a mobile tablet. If you want something larger, say, to draw with your elbow, you'll be looking at the 15.6 pro

>XP Pen Artist 15.6 Pro
Unreliable chinese garbage.

Also 15.6" is nowhere near big enough of a display to justify purchasing over a far more reliable Galaxy Tab or iPad. 15.6" is small as fuck for desktop level software.

Artist 15.6 Pro, Kamvas 16 pro or an iPad are your most reliable and under 400US.

Cintiqs are starting to show signs of Wacom cutting their lifespans, Android tablets have almost no optimization for drawing applications and pens with consistent pressure.

I'm beginner here. Does a bigger screen/drawing with your elbow really make that big improvement? I already own a medium sized screenless tablet, which I don't feel uncomfortable at all when using it. But then again probably it's because I've never used a bigger screen. Another factor that I consider s6 lite is the CSP and I need to upgrade my phone so I think why not use a tablet instead?

>> No.4873376

>>4873338
The minimum without hunching over and boxing yourself in is a 15.6 ideally. I recently upgraded to a 24pro and the space it gave me let me sit upright and not strain to see the screen. 15.6 is a universal size, perfectly balanced as all things should be.

I was looking on craigslist in my area and someone is selling a huion 221 pro for around 200 and someone else is selling a wacom 21ux (dtz 2100) for around the same price. Should I just go for the wacom?
