Anyone have a desk lamp they suggest? I've tried swapping out my room lights to 1400 lumens, which was fantastic for drawing and doing shit, but I had to pull them the same weekend I installed them because I stayed up for like 35 hours from not getting tired with how bright they were. And the 500 lumen ones I use to make sure I can sleep are too dim to really draw.

I have a little lamp that I used for reading to help. But it's not bright enough to light up my desk like I want.

Alright, and done with that. Can I get some advice on line weight positioning. I know further away should be lighter and thinner, and overlaps should be darker. but I'm not sure where else to put certain weights. Like for the bangs, should that be even thicker than say the jaw line since it's technically closer.

>> No.4861179

>>4861168
On a HEAD, don't worry about the distance thing. That's more for like... character vs. background weights.

1st consideration is LIGHT. Lines away from the light are bolder (usually this means the bottom of a form has a thicker line).

2nd (on this drawing) is any "drop shadows", meaning the bangs could have a thick line to indicate shadowing on the head. Lips on the teeth, eyelids on the eyeballs. etc.

>> No.4861194

>>4861179
Appreciate it. I'm almost finished with the first run through of the character course and the line thickness was covered, but didn't quite land with me yet.

The instructor stated it's best to go through the course once not doing any of the exercises, just to listen and take notes. And then on the second run through to do everything so the concepts stick better.

I'm looking over it now between the two. It feels like the character lost something somewhere. I'm seeing that I cut some areas from round to flat, and I'm not happy with how I made the nose more angular on the top instead of round like before. Also feels like I pushed the jaw to far back.

I really need to practice more line art I think, it just feels like I changed the whole character when I did it. Also can't decide if I like the lashes or not.

No need to rip, it's a classic beginner face. Hard outlines on features? Stringy spaghetti hair? Nostrils that point straight forward? Poor anatomy on all features and all shading is muddy midtones? Check to all of them.

Nothing wrong with it, it's a good effort, but it's a beginner face. You need improvement in every fundamental area to proceed so get started.

Straight up though... anatomy yes, blending NO. Getting better at "blending" is 100% not what you need right now.

If you want to get good... if it's not just for play but you want to be good... you need to get on a path of mastery that begins with fundamentals. You can start with perspective since it is among the fastest ways to improve and is the most "objective" among the fundamentals.

Find a beginner course and grind for 6 months a year.

>>4861991
That's probably a long way off. First we would need a way to scan the brain for "knowledge" / functional paths and their relationships, which would in itself turn society on it's head, and then we'd need to find a way to replicate wanted knowledge into another's brain without removing their own personality (unless you just want a brain clone, but that's useless for the purpose of learning something yourself).

Texture, for one. Those squiggles on the metal parts aren't accomplishing what you think they are. Your colors are pretty drab, too.
But the biggest flaw is giving cloth/armor volume. Your metal (I'm assuming that's metal) on the chest and arms are paper thin - they would have weight to them, thickness. The folds of the cloth aren't credible, and how they hang on the body.
Also, start experimenting with line weight. There's nothing interesting to look at, when it's all the same line weight. This is art, not architecture.

Explain the artist's intent as he made this piece. What does the red blob represent?

Jokes aside, it looks nice from a purely "modern art" perspective, though perhaps the composition is a bit off detail wise. There's so much to unload in the thing that you can barely perceive the image as a whole. Unless that's the intent of course.

"copy" can mean a lot of things, i just separate it into 3 groups

>trace study - tracing over it to feel and emulate the artists linework
>heavy reference - trying to reproduce the exact image, either just by observation or starting with the construction and building off it
>reference - using an image with a goal to fulfill something other than a full reproduction, like using a certain gesture, perspective or fabric formula

this opinion is apparently taboo here, but all 3 are perfectly fine for learning. you can even claim heavily referenced material as your own work as long as you can prove you didn't trace and you at least cite the original artist.

hey weird question but does anyone draw with a mouse instead of a tablet? I'm not a total poorfag, and I do have a tablet - I'm just curious. I made pic related just for fun a couple days ago, it's not really good or anything I just doodled in paint. But I used my mouse, and I felt more comfortable with my strokes and was more or less accurate with what I wanted to do mentally if that makes sense. I understand it's important to build muscle memory and shit and there's advantages with a pen but using a mouse just feels super comfortable and easy for me. I need to actually put this to the test and try to build something from the ground up but I was just wondering what anyone else my thing or have experienced.

The neck is still wrong. You have it positioned far back, like she has her head back. The weird thing is, the neck is obvious in it's placement in the reference, but you still don't see it.

You're also not measuring enough, because the left shoulder is compressed, and it it should be higher up Draw a line across her chest across the collar bone, hers is a line at an angle, higher on the right, yours goes straight across. You have the angle of her hips wrong too. One of the first things you should be looking at is how the hips are, juxtapozed against the shoulders, because that's crucial in poses. Her hips are cocked, but you failed to indicate that (the shape of the cut of the unitard around her thigh would help a lot giving a visual cue what's going on. Same fo the strap on her right shoulder - you have it curving back, when it's flat and straight on her shoulder. These kinds of details matter. )

Put your drawing over the reference at 50% opacity. See where it lines up, and doesn't.

And, speaking of proportions, the eyes are way too big. MEASURE. Her face is also wider, and the hair on the right hangs straight down, away from the face, and further back. In the photo you can see the contour of her face past the eyes. The hair is a complete cop out - put as much work into accurately capturing at least the contour. Look at the SHAPE of the shadow of her jaw, shoulder, and hair. That's a basic shape that if you refine, especially the curve along her neck, you'll capture that more accurately.

Those knees... MEASURE. Look at positive space (the body) and negative space (the space around her). The white space in between her thighs is something you can use.

It's not a bad attempt, regardless, but you're at the point where you really need to drill down into measuring and looking more closely at all of the landmarks, negative and positive space, and proportions. and not take shortcuts with things like hair, hands and eyes.

Here's my history with art. Will post drawing timeline as well.
Full text for a single post is too long, so I'll try cramming it all with two or three posts.

>(October, November?) 2012, age 11; first dabble in art is copying a frame of Ataru Moroboshi from Urusei Yatsura episode 2. Lines when drawing after rough and concrete.
>(March 2013, age 11; Older brother introduces me to Macromedia Flash 8 and guides me through the basic process of animation; he helps me make a test cartoon of a stick figure being decapitated by a bird.
>Dabble with Flash once more to make shitty 2 second "animations" (basic shapes, frantic lines) and upload them to Newgrounds, only for the submissions to get immediately BLAMed.
>From early 2013 to May 2014, I would occasionally draw characters from anime I had seen due to the fun of creations derived from things I enjoyed.
>Passion wanes, drawing stops.
>December 2016, age 15: Start watching Miss Dynamite on Newgrounds and eventually find a timelapse video of the creator, Sirkowski, sketching the characters Eva and Blackie in Photoshop, showing him start with the basic shape outlines, using references for a gun in the illustration and eventually completing the final image.
>Think the process is cool, passion for drawing is rejuvenated
>2017 rolls around, consider starting to draw as a New Years Resolution; doesn't happen.
>Like the idea of drawing but don't act upon it, focuses creative energy on video editing shitposts
>August 7, 2018, age 16: desire to draw kicks in once more after finding /loomis/ on 8ch, download the resource folder full of tutorials, books, etc.
>September 2018; consider starting the Draw A Box exercises, don't start

>February 2019, age 17; Copying other anime artists pictures and try apply basic construction ("just draw simple shapes lmao," no lines needed to indicate where ball is facing) to these drawings.
>Occasionally glance at the first pages of Fun With A Pencil and and Keys To Drawing and don't proceed further
>June to August 2019, copy anime characters with no fundies learned
>August 2019, age 17; sketch the first few examples from Loomis then give up because I wanted to draw anime shit
One of my classes for this school year was Art I; I didn't like the idea of being forced to draw a specific thing, plus I preferred drawing with pencils as opposed to using paints. It was an okay experience. I've began using block erasers when drawing as a habit from that class.
>February 2020; get a sketchbook and start sketching from art that I think look cool
>Late August 2020, age 19; decide to give Loomis another shot so I can learn the fundamentals required to later draw the things I want
Whenever I look at the homepage submissions on Newgrounds with great quality created by artists/animators in their early-mid 20s, I can't help but think "what could have been" in an alternate timeline where I consistently drew from 2013 onwards with a further exploration of Flash, like "I would have so much skill by now if I stuck with it."

Is it not too late for me to "make it" if I start now at age 19 and grind fundies/draw for a specific amount of time each day consistently? Due to my final year of high school being online, I have a lot more free time on my hands. Art III is also an elective of mine this year, with weekly assignments where students draw from still objects with shadows; the experience from that could come in handy.
I've heard some anons recommend dedicating three hours a day for drawing sessions but for now I suppose I'll start small with one hour then slowly stretch it out as I progress further.
