The face doesn't depict overly handsome man, but it's not unappealing per se. It's the face in tandem with the hair. There's a dichotomy that makes it so incredibly uncanny. The silky, feathery hair looks like it belongs on some sort of shoujo ikemen, but you're matching it with such a strong and distinctive face.

Well, anyways- how should I put this?- I honestly don't think that there's anything inherently wrong with having 'ugly' characters. I mean, you aren't drawing twitter-tranny sparkle-fuglies where they make their characters as ugly, smelly, hairy, and just plain gross as possible with a shopping list of mental illnesses and special snowflake genderqueer bullshit stapled to their ass as some retarded statement against muh beeyooty standards and duh patriarchy, or some stupid shit like that. You're drawing characters that have imperfect features, like real people do. There's a point where "MUH APPEAL" just becomes an excuse to not have any interesting or defining characteristics at all, I've personally had enough "appealing" characters to last me a lifetime, so I try to make mine interesting. Just do the same for yours. "Ugly" characters can be just as charming and likeable as "appealing" ones, so long as you 1.) make them expressive and 2.) give them interesting personalities and you might be surprised at how positively people will respond. Like >>4859743 says, Disney villains are a great example of ugly and even evil characters that are well liked because of their personalities and charisma, which their physical appearance is a part of. Also, did you know that Horikoshi's editors gave him pushback on All Might because they thought that people wouldn't like him, because he wasn't "attractive" enough? Yet people's response to him was overwhelmingly positive. The Goon has pretty much nothing but ugly characters but it's great.
Work on your gesture, work on broadening your knowledge of facial expressions and anatomy and how to make them feel natural. Otherwise don't worry about making your character "appealing", worry about giving them a soul. There's more to the art world than pinups and instagram-tier bullshit.

The road to improvement is a balancing act between holding to your personal vision and listening to the input of others, who can often see things that you cannot due to their outside perspective. Just remember that you have to take criticism with a grain of salt, because the critic isn't always coming from an objective standpoint. "ooga booga me no like ugly, me want pretty anime moe girl, you should draw pretty instead because me like that better," for example, probably isn't worth listening to or good enough reason to cause you to reorient your vision just to please some random fag on the internet. Remember that criticism should be to the benefit of you and your art to make it the best that it can be on its own terms, not necessarily to please everyone else.

However, it would be a good idea to study why things are generally more appealing so you have an understanding of it to work with, because as the old saw says, "no rools, only tewls." Try drawing conventionally cute characters to broaden your horizons, study some japanese artists, mangaka and animators. I often flip-flop between very cute, hyper-stylized characters influenced by Imaishi and Yoh Yoshinari and those that are more influenced by American comic book artists. Hell, some of the best eastern artists are westaboos.
The more info and inspiration you can gather, the better off you will be. You might find things about yourself that will surprise you. I know that the me back in high school years wouldn't have imagined I would be drawing a lot of cute shit, because back then all I wanted to draw was tough guys and monsters and 'cool' stuff, not really because I was insecure or anything (I was a quiet, borderline autistic loner and didn't concern myself much with fitting in), but that was what I was interested in. So long as you keep at it, consuming art and media from a broad range of sources and learn from them while practicing, your art style will evolve naturally.

The problem with most of these gross "tumblr art sjw" characters is the artists intentions. Usually their only reason to making the character as repulsive as possible is to prove some sort of point with very poor execution. I'm not trying to prove any points. I don't care about diversity of beauty standards or whatnot. I just like making characters that are kinda nasty because it fits the story/context I put them in and I think it's fun to draw weird gross things sometimes.

Thats fair. It's not really what I was going for but everyone sees and interprets things differently. Maybe I do have bad taste or just poor execution. I'ts not for everyone and that's okay. I do feel like I can't really convey the right intended message with my drawings because I lack the skill to do so. But that's why I'm here to learn and improve.

I am planning on redesigning the two pastel colored angel guys by the way. Maybe I'll go for something simpler for now and not bite off more than I can chew.

You need to learn the planes and anatomy of the face. A lot of the errors in your work are down to symbol drawing the features and a lack of overall proportions. The cranial mass of the skull is too small on both of them. Youve drawn your eyes as almonds just sliding around the brow area. The glabella on bubblegum dude is too long.
Have tried any of the videos or books in the resources thread about drawing and painting the face? The premium courses site has a ton of videos to download about construction of the facial features. I feel like that would benefit you most for now.
