4860191 No.4860191 [Reply] [Original]

My boss told me people wouldn't want their OC's drawn in a realistic style and should make my stuff more anime. I get it but I also really like my art sometimes and think my style works for what it is. so I decided to try that out and make this (the character belongs to AlchyKiller btw). this is still a WIP and I'm coloring it ATM.

The bowl balancing off the edge bothers me. The pose is overall very awkward and the way she's eating is kind of gross.

Is he the boss of your art? Fucking A. draw how you like, people want good shit, not arbitrarily anime shit, I promise you, and B. don't get into the "my style" shit. "My style" is what people say when they didn't learn from a place of fundamentals that allows them to jump styles. You'll end up with a style because you're and individual but it's not a goal, you should fight it as long as you can.

Your style isn't an issue. As long as you are studying the fundamentals honestly, use whatever style you want.

Yeah I agree, the gross eating was intentional but I didn’t know what to do with the arm, and originally the bowl was not as precarious but somewhere during the line art phase I fucked up the table. I’m definitely gonna move the bowl before finishing

I know my anatomy isn't the best but I do try, and I'm getting better every time I draw, or at least I think so. tho often my heads are too small cause that's where I start and by the time I realized I've gone too far to make any real changes without starting over

I can absolutely see it working if you were more comfortable with how anime works and could stylize that correctly, but right now it's just unappealing.
For the pose, while the arm is the big problem, yes, it's ultimately a consequence of the spine. She's sitting ramrod straight up, making her posture tense. It'd be more natural for her to lean towards the table and have her arms on it to support herself. It also isn't natural to try to eat ramen with your head that high up - also why she be leaning towards the table. The girl also isn't following perspective properly and is sitting diagonally to the bench (this bothered me the most out of everything.)
Looking at all your other work you posted, you seem to be going for realism yet heavily symbol draw. Very uncanny. Anyway, best of luck to you and read some more art books.

I also recommend watching a Vilppu lecture every week, and following the following week tailoring your figure studies towards that one lecture. You can find his stuff as the first link in the video course thread here on /ic/

well, a lot of the reason I like my art only sometimes is cause after finishing I'll often find problems with it, most of which anatomical issues. the things I actually like about my art is my attention to detail, so I'm drawing what I like but I'm just not good enough to actually like my art

trying to fix the arm and make the posture more natural, the perspective is strange so it's not super conducive to making this look natural

The pose is wrong to the point it'd be easier redrawing her completely, so I'd honestly just finish what you got and just keep in mind the critique for future pieces. No point mulling over every work. Try getting up and doing the poses you draw as well. Also, please for the love of god don't chicken scratch...

I want to thank every one for the helpful advice. I will defiantly practice more with the suggested resources. I will also make a declaration to learn how to properly stylize anime people cause that's also a route I wanna head down.
I knew there was stuff wrong with my drawings but I've been too close to the subjects so I wasn't able to properly pick apart my drawings and find their flaws.
When I return I shall be stronger.
Again, I truly thank all of you for your time.

In what way, do you work for an illustration company and hes the boss? In any case hes not the boss of your personal art. Your style looks fine my only issue is your shadows look kinda flat, and the face has a lot of stuff going on it looks cluttered and hard to read

>> No.4860346

>>4860338
yeah, I work for a company that takes commissions for people and gives them to their artists. the boss isn't an artist. I would've gone ahead and took commissions myself but I'm a really small artist with ~30 followers and would've had to undersell myself, while they actually pay hourly. though at this point I might just go get a normal job since they're not getting me much work.

>> No.4860350

>>4860318
Not him but chicken scratch isnt exactly wrong its more of a symptom of being unconfident in what youre drawing, things end up looking stiff and have no flow which i can see in yours. The more confident you are about what youre drawing the less lines you need to draw it and the better the results. For example a stickman is an easy thing that everyone knows how to draw and i doubt youd chicken scratch out the lines for that youd just sweep down one or 2 lines for the arms body and legs. People who are as confident at drawing full bodies as they are stickman have no need to chicken scratch because they know exactly where the lines should go

>> No.4860352

>>4860346
That sounds like a great job if they pay hourly. I didnt even know companies like that existed, finding commissions is hard for me, what term would i search to find one..' artist commissioning acency' or something?

>>4860350
alright. thank you very much, I'll take that into consideration when I start my next drawing

>> No.4860359

>>4860352
I found them purely by coincidence. They have found me like 2 commissions in two weeks. and because they pay hourly it means they limit how long you can draw. might not be as bad if you're fast. also you end up mostly drawing furries, I personally don't get much out of em' so it's pretty unfulfilling. You can try and apply if you want. The name is Ikate Keda studios on twitter.

I like your older style. It reminds me of the very first TMNT comics. Gritty and very unique. Don't do anime because it is popular. Do your style you like and people will see your work looks better because you like that way of doing it. Plus your work has a lot of detail and anime is simplified faces. The two contrasting styles do not mesh well.

Thanks, I’m trying to find my own thing. I do also enjoy the anime/ manga aesthetic so I might still try and implement some of that in my work sometimes. Stuff like ghost in the shell, berserk, Akira, and silent hill illustrations are what inspired me to truly pursue art after all and it would be nice to pay homage to those in a small way
