IF YOU ARE A /BEG/INNER IN ART, please use this thread to post pieces for critique or ask for advice. We should not have to make new threads or post in the Drawthread with our fundamental exercises.

Feel free to post even the smallest exercise you have done to show you are still trying, do not give up and most importantly make YOURSELF proud.

RESIZE YOUR IMAGES - preferably ~1000px, <1.1mb

When in doubt ALWAYS READ THE STICKY:
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1uwaXKU7ev6Tw_or__o8ARpUb6r2rCZYJGqwSFV9AD98/edit#bookmark=id.15jx3pyuimvj

TRY TO BE MORE ACTIVE AND GIVE PEOPLE SOME FEEDBACK - many studies are left unreplied, which is very sad and can be quite demotivating for the people that try their best to improve but are left directionless. One reply equals one prayer.

Anons in last thread very helpful

Shapes are poor, but am I starting to understand simplification? If I nailed this stage, what would the next step be? Carving more nuance into the existing shapes, adding more values and value shapes on top, or beginning to model with blending forms?

How primitive bs complex should my shapes be before I start blending and playing with edges, do I blend once eeeevery shape and nuance is added?

>> No.4857249

>>4857242
How, for example, would I approach the arms?
At the minute they are the same colours and values.
Would I repaint the further one darker? Would I glaze it with thinner washes? Layer properties like overlay, multiply etc?
Would I try to find an existing darker value/colour to replace it with, or add a new one?

And at what stage in the blocking in of simple shapes do I start differentiating and breaking the simple string value scheme into more nuance?

Todays lunch doodle. I'm not happy with this one. I feel I tried too hard with it, also not a fan of how the hair turned out. Think I'll spend part of this weekend doing hair studies and then simplifying them.

Also, starting to realize the eye problem and that it might actually be better to draw 3 lines for the eyes instead of just the middle section so I can get the sizing correct.

MUCH better. You have not nailed this stage (and you'll need to do literally dozens before you're really at a point of progession) but the next step would then be breaking shapes into smaller shapes with smaller changes in value / color, until you're confident in the level of complexity you've achieved. How far that will be is a matter of taste but generally you want to remain as simple as possible while still achieving the level of detail / design that you need for the piece. Look at JC Leyendecker, they're clearly simplified and design-y paintings, but they have an unbelievable level of realism and "life" at the same time. That's top tier shape design.

Edge manipulation (is it soft? hard? How soft, how hard?) is how you connect the shapes. You don't want to just blend them all together and lose the structure they provide, but you probably won't get a sufficient level of polish if you leave them all with hard edges. Contrast and balance are everything.

That is far too many to be drawing in an hour. Do you want to get them right or not? Take your time, draw a really nice circle, and make sure the vertical / horizontal lines go ALL THE WAY AROUND. Unless you do this, you're not going to internalize the way that lines wrap around forms. If it takes 10 minutes to do one carefully.... take 10 minutes.

Same issue with the contour lines, do you want to get them right? Then slow down, and try to draw them all the way around. If you draw them messy it's worse than not having them at all.

Can you elaborate on the simplification. It looks super flat due to the green and skin tone being very close to each other in value. Feels a bit like your simplification is simply whether the skin is covered by goo or not, and not really concerned with the form.

Have you considered a limited value palette study of this girl? maybe 3-4 values in total? That would force you to simplify ^^

Not bad! If you're serious about improving you're ready to start to move away from stylized features at this point and approach constructing them from a very academic standpoint.

In addition, you'll want to work on form (especially some sort of simplification like the famous Loomis head / mannequin) if you're not already.

In this specific drawing, I see conflicting perspective between the nose and hairline (which are facing more to the right) and the eyes and mouth, which are closer to being straight on.

Generally this sort of inconsistancy is introduced in the constructive stage and is usually exacerbated by using stylized features - this is one reason why very abstract styles of drawing, such as comics and manga need to be absolutely grounded in fundamentals. It's just too hard to know if your features are in the right place if they're not grounded in a sense of form and perspective.

Part of it is that you just need to draw cleaner. Sorry, but black and white "inking" style artwork is super, super hard and you have to be GOOD to be good.

Part if it is just understanding line weight. The thicknesses of lines aren't arbitrary - for example they should be heavier on the shadow side, thinner on the lit side of a form. Thicker lines move a form toward the view, thinner ones back. There are a TON of different things that can be expressed just with line weight.

"The Art of Comic Book Inking (Third Edition)" goes into a lot of that stuff, but some you'll have to just pick up from various artists you admire.

Pinky leading into wrist line makes it look super long, either delete it or move it to the left / break it up at the pinky start.

Look at the base of your own fingers - they are arranged in n arc, yours look like they start along a slope. Yours are also continuous tubes, don’t have a sense of taper or much anatomy going on - look at 80s manga for some really nice simple hands

I'd recommend using a harder brush and also choosing a light source and blocking out light/shadow from the start. I think you should also up the saturation on your colors and darken the values since everything is very light. It looks like you know how the forms work/where to place them but you're values just aren't dark enough. Pic related is a rough example of how I would approach it. First block out a strong shadow shape with a deep saturated color and then you can start blending. Hope this is somewhat helpful.

You try to draw a complex 3D form but you lack of understanding of very simple 3D shapes.

Draw basic 3D forms (qubes, triangles, balls) until you understand how a line behaves in a different angle and position.

Also before you post a drawing, spent more then 10 minutes on it.

There isn't. If I don't know what I'm going to draw (i.e. practice) I'll usually do 3000 x 4000. If I want to draw something specific, I'll relate it to the real life size of whatever I would draw on, and then do 300-400ppi - so for an 11x17 bristol it may be 3300x5100 digital.

are you printing? dpi is generally a term for pieces destined for print. dots per inch.
a screen is viewed by pixels, 1920x1080 being a common size, thats 2.1 megapixels. we're moving into 4k being a standard, thats 16 megapixels. 8k comes out to 33 megapixels. if you were future proofing your digital art you would aim for it to fit somewhere in there.
but you dont want a piece to be that size as you work on it, you need to be able to zoom in to work on details without it blurring on you. so double that for the project file.

Most figure references are taken from far enough away and with a narrow enough lens, and from a level enough angle that the 3 point vanishing points are WAY out, far beyond the image boundaries (where they're much less useful). In these cases it is best to just box the reference as a whole and then focus on the perspective of discrete body parts -

Close up shots with a wider lens will eventually enter the realm of 2 and 3 point perspective, and eventually 5 (or curvilinear) perspective as the view widens and distorts. The vanishing points will still be off the page but there will be a visible difference of perspective between, for instance, the brow line and the collarbone line.

Loomis depicts a head like this in "figure drawing for all it's worth", as a head so large that it's almost architectural, with clear 2 point perspective.

The most pertinent use of perspective in the typical straight on image is knowing what's above and below us, and what's coming towards us or away from us, and what's to the left or right of our vision (i.e. 1 point perspective), but when drawing comics or other intense scenes a wide angle / close up vibe is common and therefore you'll construct your own perspective lines, usually in 3 point.

>> No.4860028

I'm doing framed perspective 1 and I'm struggling doing the pool house exercise because I can't get big enough paper for not having extremely distorted image due to vps being on the page not apart enough and doing the perspective grid with out of page relative positions everything becomes incorrect very quickly by the time I fuck up amy subdivision. All of this without counting it takes me around 10000 rays and by then I have a hard time reading what the fuck was my original layout. What the fuck do I do? Am I expected to believe people do this freehand perfectly?

>> No.4860048

>>4860011

Stop using symmetry mode / copying left to right. You need to get good at using your eyes to notice symmetry errors and doing this will hold you back.

It's good that you're grouping fingers, but for an open hand usually the middle / ring touch, or middle ring pinkie.

Compare hands to the size of the face to help proportion... yours are way small (and proportions in general need work).

>> No.4860057

>>4860028
Get bigger paper, no two ways around it. Tape 4 sheets from the back if you need to. Drawing anything requiring precision on small paper is hard.

Once you've practiced you'll be able to visualize vanishing points and do a "good enough" job of respecting them, or if you absolutely need them you can literally use "off paper" vanishing points: put a sticky dot on the table (or a pushpin) and tape your paper down so it doesn't move). Now you have constant VPs without massive paper.

Can you find 1 hour a day to really practice? No distractions, no games, no bullshit? 45min?

If you practice 45min a day, working on real learning (not trying to draw waifus and shit), 7 days a week, and as often as you can find the time otherwise, you'll be practicing a LOT more than most, and you'll come out of uni ready to tear it the fuck up with all your free time.

If you CAN'T maintain a consistent 45mins (or however much) a day, then the question of time is irrelevant and Uni is just your excuse.

Looks great, good to see you're working on something that matters, but DON'T FORGET YOUR CORE SHADOW!

Core shadow is the spot with the least direct light, and the least reflected light. You can visualize it as the "edge" of the shadow and it's the most important part, because how dark / how soft you make it tells the viewers eye everything about the light on the object.

Also... don't forget occlusion, it's the tight pinch between an object (sphere) and another object (table) that are touching - its the spot where a light ray is least likely to bounce and end up (notice I darkened right under the sphere).

light source would only reflect as a ball for a limited number of reasons. Keep the white spot generally blended and also remember that there is a lot more white light than you think on a sphere, added with a lot more varrying shades. Perfection slows you down tremendously so focus on learning fundamentals and drawing things efficiently before trying to be perfect. Best advice - don't do the face until you have the body and form blocked and semi-polished. Beginners race to the fun bits, and then lose interest or lose focus because it feels "done".

Stop focusing on details and texture. Get the form established. You shouldn't be drawing the face or the fur, when you don't have the whole body even semi-established.

Rough to detail. It's a process. Establish the overall form, then bring the detail level, texture, and everything else up as a whole, evenly across the figure. Learn to see and draw the contour, the white space, establish where the figure lives in the white space of the page, then drill down into finer passes of detail and focus.

Make sense? Common mistake - don't feel bad. Go back and try again, and look at the overall shape, and capture that. Facial features, fur, all that? That can come later. Block shapes, for now. Draw a block shape that someone will look at, and say "That's a lion".

Every artist goes through the "fuck... I suck" stage. I am years in and I still feel that way sometimes.

Talent isn't real.

All the artists you admire are the ones that felt like they sucked, and didn't give up like a butt-fucking quitter.

Here's a tip: you haven't done what you can on that book or any book. Good art books will follow you for life and you'll take from them over and over. This is your first time with that book. Every time you come back you'll have a new approach, something new to learn. Study something else for a while.

Not bad, decent rendering, but the colors and shading are off, when you're done with a study always compare your color palette with the refrence. And looks to me like you added a bit of heft to the lil' feller.
Also why's he looking at me with such contempt.

nope, 20, 30s, even 40s and up is never too late to get good at drawing. Some people just start earlier than others.

Hello everyone. I'm 29 and I will start learning to draw. I hope you will all attack my work and motivate me to not be a failure.
