I really enjoy making them but i'm under the impression that they are much easier, since you're analyzing and copying already "solved" shapes and values.

well thats the point, youre using the knowledge to see how the shapes are 'solved' and then applying that to your own future work, its called studies for a reason, nice piece btw

Is it possible to significantly improve just by observing stuff and trying to deconstruct and replicate it on paper? I mean this must have been the go-to way for artists before the internet age who didn't go to school, so it should be possible right?
I don't doubt that things like DAB would help me a lot with construction and whatnot, but the exercise is just so frustrating and tiring that it makes me wanna drop drawing altogether. I want drawing to be something relaxing, something that doesn't feel like chore.
Has anyone here self-improved in their skills without following guides and tutorials? From what I've heard Kim Jung Gi got his skills by only focussing on drawing things around him 24/7. Now I'm not expecting to get on his level, but doesn't this prove that following all these tutorials is not necessary? Idk. Someone wanna share their experience?

This looks really good, but it needs more exaggeration. Try raising the lower part of the axe hilt higher up, the axe head lower and level out the pole a bit. Raise the left hand up and extend the right arm out to counter it. Then I'd say raise the extend the left leg further out (towards us) while putting more weight on it, more of a bend instead of so straight, like the axe has a lot of weight. And I'd say a bit more bent backwards, because the axe head is of course heavy, so it would pull backwards a bit in motion.

Assuming the wild neck/leg proportions are intentional, try feeling the shoulder bones a bit more, the left of the rib cage seems to disappear underneath the breast, and the stomach area is too big. You also aren't drawing elbows.

try to see where the weight is going, it should be on his right foot, but that foot is not even touching the ground completely. He's leaning on his left foot which is in front of him, but the main weight in the picture is the axe which is pushing down on his backside.
if you were to unpause this image, the dude would just fall over backwards, this makes it an unnatural pose.

Alright /beg/ I got carried away and now the real reason im here is gonna come into play: I suck at rendering. Now, before that, If there's anything you guys see to be off (besides the angle of her face, which im sad I messed up :C), let me know before I go into rendering. Thanks all!

(the reason I have light and dark versions of the colors on her is because I plan to use them to light/shade clothes and skin so yeah)

you ever seen anyone stand like that irl?
don't think so, and if they did they'd probably not prefer to hold that stance.
This makes everything in the image up till the waist fucked: the left hip is pointed up, but the foot is not actually supporting it etc.
please make the lower legs and the arms more volume or remove rendering of muscles as now you have exaggerated muscles but no muscle mass/fat which would form those exaggerated muscles.
also long neck.
coloring is fine.

Trying out watercolor for the first time. Goal was to replicate the colors I was seeing, brush control will come later so that the forms no longer look like dogshit. What is the standard way to darken the values of watercolor pigments? Do I need to buy darker pigments and just use more paint? I was mixing with black for this. This was late evening but the values make it look much brighter than it should be.

Great start! Love those bushes.
there are two ways to get darker clean colors:
glazing - add a layer of colour, let it dry and repeat.
color to water ratio up up uuup.
I find the glazing method more forgiving.

If anyone wants to pitch in with a good guide on water colour mixing, please do :)

how much of a /beg/ trap is wanting to draw something impressive? as i’m on yet another attempt to learn how to draw, i think my biggest mistake years ago was trying to grind until i did something perfect. thing is you need to loosen your mind and actually take in what you’re being taught. whatever ends up on the paper doesn’t matter as long as you understand the teacher. this is why watching/listening to a tutorial without drawing does absolutely nothing. it’s all about the brain.

After sitting and thinking, I probably am just copying. I have the reference up on a second monitor and try to draw what I'm seeing.

When I get to some sort of angle/line I don't understand I trace over it on the reference to get a feel for how it's drawn before trying to draw it on my own.
I'm stuck in my head too much trying to get it exact instead of actually learning anything from it.

Indeed. So my advice to you would be to step back from anime for a sec.
Anime is a complicated style since it blends both decent fundies with simplification and style. For instance, they can draw a perfectly well foreshortened body and skullshape with symbolic features like the eyes and mouth that may or might not be in correct perspective.
It's hard to keep track of all their decisions so you would be better off getting human references and constructing them with a consistent method (vilppu would be my recomendation). Then, after you understand how shapes and 3dvolume is created on paper, you will have a much easier time learning from anime because you'd be deconstructing the process rather than the final lineart.

Ignore facial features like eyes, noses. Draw their heads as best as you can, include a general indication of hair line and whether or not the hair overlaps the ear or not. Don't draw hair strands. Block the hair in with dominantly straight lines and some curved ones.

Don't bother giving them numbers or saying which one is worst. Spend enough time on each one to make sure it's done well before you move on to another one.

It looks like a relaxed pose, and has a sense of gesture, yes. That's great. However you've included a lot of extraneous information (a full outline) and ignored the most crucial parts of gesture: the spine and relationships between the ribs / shoulders and the pelvis. Your drawing does not have a centerline.

If your goal is to go pose idea > gesture > construction > drawing, you haven't yet mastered the second step. You should finish this drawing (keep your expectations realistic and don't spend too much time on it) and then save it to compare with your improved drawings later.

After that, if you want to use gesture as part of your figure drawing regimen (and you had better) you need to set aside time to work specifically on gesture, and draw literally hundreds of them from reference (ranging from 30 sec to 5 min each), and eventually thousands of them over the course of your learning.

Yes. You are using tiny strokes to build up a poor approximation of the subject, it's going to take forever and it won't be good. You need to use broad shape recognition and shape design to break the subject down into a simplified sense of form. You are not at the "shading" or "blending" stage of this piece, and you're CERTAINLY not at the detail or texture stage. The hair should be getting blocked in as AT MOST 2 colors in broad, contiguous shapes at this juncture - not painted as strands. You could approximate the skin in this drawing with a dark tone (creases and the shadow on the foot) a mid tone, a greenish mid tone, and a light highlight tone.

Work from the general to the specific. You're starting FAR too specific.

Yes. Start with 2 values (black and white) . Then you have no shading, no tone to lean on. Just shade, light, and shape. Look at Frazettas pen and ink works (he followed this approach into his paintings as well, starting with simplified burnt umber pickouts with a limited value range). Then, try 3 values. Black, white, middle grey. Leave color out until you feel comfortable painting with shape and limited value.

Very appealing to the eyes in general I really loved the pastel color scheme.
The thing I liked the most were the fingers because they look awesome coming from somebody with your ability (no disrespect) although the index finger should be smaller, kind of looks like you got the middle finger and the index finger mixed up, it used to happened to me a lot back in the day.
The thing that I didn't like was the hair because it's looking way too thin, it needs a whole lot more volume and/or movement specially if you're making the illusion of wind/ice in the background.
Very nice effort overall and on a side note try to learn some "contrapposto" for the positioning of the body parts.

I started with an approximate color in the hair and and one for the skin and altered from there.

Warm / cool aren't holding you back here, and barely even come into consideration from this poor quality photo under bathroom light (hint... it's all warm).

If you are serious about learning color, work with the "Zorn" palette. No reason you can't use it digitally. It's a white, a black, a orangey red (vermillion is typical) and a dull yellow (yellow ochre). Within those four colors and their various mixtures are pretty much everything you need to paint people. Note: there is no blue, cool colors are represented as grey and actually look blue in comparison to the warm skin tones. Warm and cool are relative, and when you're working in all warm tones you'll be surprised at how cool a neutral grey can be.

No fluke. It works because it's essentially monochrome. You could spin the hue slider and it would work in just about any spot. You could make it totally black and white and it would work. So in this picture I have 2 boxes. But these boxes only share 1 vanishing point. My head says just add 2 more vanish points for the second box. But then where does that end? Couldn't I just keep rotating the box next to it to disjoint the continuity and then add infinite vanishing points?

I can't honestly fully express my confusion its just not making sense. I've been sitting at my desk rotating a block trying to figure this out. I may be retarded.

Strictly speaking, a there are an infinite number of possible vanishing points in any scene. When drawing simple solids, we choose those which correspond to the "lines" of the object because those are the ones that are useful for showing depth.

When drawing 2 cubes in completely different orientations, you have 2 different sets of applicable vanishing points.

You're skipping steps. You need to spend a lot more time on basic construction / mannequinization before delving any deeper into anatomy (I can identify the muscles you're using, that's AWESOME, but you're wrapping them around incomplete and incorrect forms).

Also, trying to master "comic book" features is going to result in failure. As soon as you need to draw them from a different angle without an exact reference, you're going to be lost. You need to understand the underlying structures of the real-life features, and then you'll understand what the simplified comic book lines represent (and therefore you'll be able to A. make your own stylized features and B. draw them in any orientation).

If you're serious about getting it right, skip the comic eyes for now and focus on the structure of the body, head, and features. Draw them consistently, all the time, and then spend your non-practice time working on comic style stuff to keep you engaged.

Definitely start with the sphere. Once you are at an intuitive level with constructing heads you can start from a centerline but you're definitely not there yet. Stop trying to be sketchy, your contour lines are all over the place. You don't yet have the requisite sense of form to accurately draw a person, so you need to spend a lot more time with simple forms (boxes, cubes, cylinders, cones) if you want to improve. Don't stop drawing people, but for every 1 hour you spend drawing tits you better have spent 9 hours actually focusing on form.

The adjustment for the legs and feet is much better. Now it looks like the weight of the axe is being supported by his legs.

Just remember, after doing your initial gesture be sure and exagurate on top of it afterwards, almost to the point of breaking it. Because once you add your line layer it will detract from the motion you had before.

Thanks man, appreciate the feedback and the fact you took the time to redline it. Would you be able to give me some pointers on the previous one too?

>both arms up girl
arms don't have much form and looks pretty flat. the right arm connecting to the right shoulder is too diagonal, as well as the right shoulder itself being too low to the neck. torso and hips are a bit too wide from the reference, but the ribcage is captured decently. the crotch is sloppy, causing the left thigh to have issues with the form. the thighs and calves need to be more narrow

>girl with hat
right arm needs to be tilted/pointed up a bit more to reach the top of the hat. neck is deformed but thats because of the complex lighting of the reference. the back to right shoulder could be connected better, as well as more tone to the upper back itself. you forgot the left arm. the lower back shouldnt have that much curve compared to the upper back. give the stomach more attention and have the right thigh curve in more to the hip. legs are are fine besides the right thigh and the the missing curve to the left upper calve

>girl looking down
very good hair and head shape, but the entire torso and waist is is not the shape of the body. the shadow from the hair causes it to look that way, but you can see more skin underneath the shadow. right arm is a bit messed up, pay attention to the collarbone connecting the right shoulder. forearm is a bit longer too

you're doing well for capturing silhouettes by themselves, but try to recognize and draw some of noticeable details the can guide you to the human form

>collarbone for symmetry guidelines
>upper pecs, even in girls
>armpits, i could never really understood them for years but it's the main key to connecting arms to shoulders, even if you don't see them
>ribs and ribcage, especially the falloff below it
>the diagonal split between the legs and the torso, treat everything below that as the leg even though it is still part of the waist
>calves, see if you can find the "big oval" in them

cubes would only share vanishing points if they are pointed in exactly the same direction. the vanishing point thing is good for draing buildings because they are all basically rectangles from above and all face the street so its useful. or if you're drawing a car, the whole car is a box, and then you can cut things out or add them onto the box to keep them in perspective. the 2 boxes on your desk aren't ke that. they have their own vanishing points. just eyeball it dude.

Did this from imagination, something seems off. I'm aware of my shitty line work, I'm doing drawabox right now to help. Any insight?

Who are some good people to follow to learn anatomy to sketch as a beginner? Every guide I find online are from people who dont consider themselves artists/professionals who make videos just to make videos or expect you to be moderately good before even touching their content.

Also, why is Fun with a Pencil and Figure Drawing For All That Its Worth recommended so much dispite a lot of Loomis content I've read feel very not fleshed out or explained properly?

Admittedly its subjective I find it that way but it seems oddly difficult to get a grip on it.
