Pic is a sketch I've already posted but I wanted to talk about form and drawing figures and stuff.

When I do these studies or whatever they're called, I do it like I'm making a sculpture.
I paint the general shape in a mid tone and shape it to match the subject.
Then I add shadows and highlights
Then I blend it, correct anatomical mistakes, add detail, etc.

When I do it I feel like a get a better sense for muscle and bone anatomy, relative proportion, how light works, skin tone, etc.
When I really struggle to render something without it looking uncanny, I stop and do a dedicated study of that body part from that angle to figure out what makes it look human.
But I see a lot of people talk about symbol drawing and complaining that people are just copying, etc.
Can someone help me understand this? If you paint a model is that copying? I don't see how that's bad. if I go outside and paint my backyard, is that copying?

so I'm reading the sticky and the picasso sketch doesn't make much sense to me. Wouldn't it be easier to simplify the whole man into a basic shape and then get into more details from there? To me there's no point of just redrawing the lines because you only learn how to replicate another drawing. Why should I ignore the object as a whole? Doesn't it make more sense to draw the shape of the man first since it helps you understand its proportions?

You are training your hand-eye coordination. Of course, you use construction for your own art, but this is specifically an exercise in seeing things properly. To get you out of symbol drawing by not letting your brain automatically tell you how something should look, but 100% relying on your eyes. Most people don't even realize they're not fully using their eyes since it happens so automatically. You look at a picture of a feature and think you remember what it looked like when you saw it, and your brain auto says "this is what a food/hand looks like". The upside down picasso thing is so that your brain doesn't have anything to auto tell you "it looks like this", so you're flexing your visual muscle.

It's a good exercise and will help you long term.

>> No.4840621

>>4840384
I think by symbol drawing people mean you're trying to paint directly what you see without understanding why it looks like it does. If you hyperfocus on details you lose sight of the whole. This is why it looks uncanny

You should start with gesture & construction just like if you were drawing an imaginary figure and build up from there. Building a solid foundation is key

No, this is the opposite of what symbol drawing is. You WANT to paint directly what you see. Symbol drawing is painting what you *THINK* you see, instead of what's actually there. It's when you rely on your memory of an object rather than ignoring what your brain says and just translating your vision to paper.

I had a painting professor who was always adamant that "if you can't draw it, you can't paint it." I agree. If you're planning to do any painting that has realistic qualities, then a foundation in drawing will be quite helpful. Even if you are perhaps leaning more towards abstract painting, drawing teaches an artist how to translate what they see, either in front of them or in the minds, to marks on a page. Drawing teaches how to measure and think. The line between what is drawing and what is painting often blurs, but that's something you discover as you go on. But this is not to say you should be a competent draftsperson before you pick up a paintbrush, learn the two in conjunction with each other. As your drawing improves, so will your painting, and vice versa.

I think you’re headed in the right direction as long as you don’t keep it perfectly symmetrical, it looks like you’re still in the sketch stage though so I’m sure you were planning on changing that. I would try rotating the pelvis so it’s tilted down towards her left leg, and then maybe tilt the torso/rib cage in the opposite direction to create some sense of motion. You’re doing good though, that sort of angle and pose is pretty difficult to get right

are there any resources that give you a bit of information on how mangakas learned to draw and how they developed their style? For example I like Taiyo Matsumoto a lot because his art is kind of child-like and a bit "unfocused" but at the same time the technical aspects like angles and proportions are so spot on. It's this odd balance of technical mastery and unique art style that I find it so appealing.
How does one achieve this? When I try to follow guides I always end up drawing the most generic shit which makes me question if I even need to learn that at all. How do you guys learn the fundamentals AND develop your style at the same time? When I browse through the artwork on this board I'm always reminded how similar and standard it all looks (no offense, I can't do it any better)

The main thing I see is that everything looks flat. Try drawing through the forms for your contour lines to get full ellipses until you really get how they need to curve to appear 3D. Also, it looks like you're symbol drawing a bit in some places for your textures. draw what you see, not what you know.

Gesture is a misnomer. Think of it as pose. Maybe there’s some real motion involved and other times there isn’t. The thing to remember is that you’ll benefit from doing the gesture or pose first because that becomes the foundation for the rest of the drawing. Get that down and you’ve nailed your proportions and perspective as well with some scribbled stick figures. This way you don’t have to manage those on top of keeping structure and anatomy in mind. It’ll make applying those much easier with the pose out of the way.

Oh, many, many years ago
When I was twenty-three
I was married to a widow
Who was pretty as can be
This widow had a grown-up daughter
Who had hair of red
My father fell in love with her
And soon the two were wed

This made my dad my son-in-law
And changed my very life
For my daughter was my mother
'Cause she was my father's wife
To complicate the matter
Though it really brought me joy
I soon became the father
Of a bouncing baby boy

This little baby then became
A brother-in-law to Dad
And so became my uncle
Though it made me very sad
For if he was my uncle
Then that also made him brother
Of the widow's grown-up daughter
Who of course is my step-mother

I'm my own grandpa
I'm my own grandpa
It sounds funny I know
But it really is so
Oh, I'm my own grandpa

This. Although I feel like I'm starting to figure out how to do it. Here's a tip that's starting to work for me, do those 60 second poses in a SMALL area. Don't try and make it a full page drawing. Separate your page into multiple boxes and each 60 second pose will be contained in that small box. I find that this helps me to focus and see the entire form better if i'm not trying to look at an entire page and fill it up.

Also another tip I'm starting to realize is to try and look at the negative space more. Really focus hard on the gaps and don't draw a "leg" or an "arm", but rather the two shapes that create the object in space. But yes it is difficult, but anything this difficult just means that it's going to end up being a good workout.

Because I eventually learn lots of different styles, e.g. realistic portrait and figure drawing, digital, anime, etc. i couldn't decide on which resources to use for ages.

Then decided I should start with the goal for first being able to draw accurate still life.

So after seeing basic 3d forms and shapes being mentioned on nearly every course and book, I decided to draw a can on my desk.

But it seems nearly impossible to get proportions correct, even when trying to measure with a pencil and practicing ellipses etc.

Is there any book or course that goes into these basic skills such as accuracy and proportions, and emphasize that first?
