As a /beg/ I have to say that these threads used to me my favourite. Even when /beg/ work was posted it generally had a healthy amount of soul. Like the creator knew what he wanted and where he was going but just didn't have the mileage to get there yet.

Lately though that seems to be slipping away. Don't get me wrong there's still a lot of great stuff being posted but If things keep going this way I can see it becoming the exception rather than the rule.

Is it impossible to draw lineart of real life portraits and copy their likeness without resorting to blocking tones? I tried tracing and the lineart alone doesn't come even close to what the person looks like. Unlike copying anime/cartoons for instance.

Investigating some different faces / studies. I kind of like 4 or something in that direction, but that might actually be the same face i always draw

These actually all seem like the same face through the lens of different styles, with different facial expressions. Try to really push the differences in proportions. Do a super-thin, angular face, a round chubby face, a face with high cheekbones, a face with wideset eyes a face with a tiny nose, etc.
Number 2 comes closest to this type of variation, but it seems like you tried too hard to change the style rather the the proportions.

Then, after you've made a bunch of weird faces, look at what you can tweak in any given face to make it look attractive/appealing, while keeping the unique quality that it has. Spend some time iterating in this manner for a while to get more comfortable with the idea of varying up faces.

Oh! Super helpful thank you I actually had forgot fixing that cheek and fixed the hand and nose, touched the hairline (damn did not had seen that one). The leg I think it was the reflection wobbling but might be something else, there's something fishy there but can't say, is somewhat hidden I feel. Composition wise is working for me, I tried cropping it from the left but then it doesn't feel right, but if you can crop it in a way that looks good to you I'll check it out.

Not really sure what was stupid about my comment, I used to have the same issue with my lines looking like that both traditionally and digitally and I found that I improved a lot by switching to a different pen. Obviously this doesn't apply as much if it's traditional, but that art looks digital to me. They're putting to much pressure and not tapering the end of their lines, making it feel blocky. There's obviously some knowledge of line weight as you can see on the shirt but it's not being used effectively in other areas.

Anyone know where I can find resources on that sort of late 1800 fairytail or woodblock looking art? The sort that features lots of hatching. Witch Hat Atelier feels a lot like a modern take on that style and I'm interested in looking into it more.

Does anyone have any traditional looking brushes they can recommend for achieving a painterly look digitally? I'm looking for oil style as well as a brighter more pastel or watercolor look, but it seems nigh impossible to find any brush that's trying to look like actual paint and isn't dogshit.
