So I downloaded the photoshop versions of the Fast Grit and Dead Subtle packs from aidownload to put them on Procreate and honestly from what I tried they seem to be fine. They’re more stamp like than actual brushes so I think they’re a better alternative if no anon puts up the Procreate versions.
Seems like stamps work better in transfers than actual brushes in general too, in reference from the previous thread.

https://www3.zippyshare.com/v/wOjmrzVa/file.html for the fast grit.

https://turbobit.net/download/free/vujsnj93w3yq?asgtbndr=1 For dead subtle. This one has pop ups and opens one separate tab from time to time so just a pre warning.

These were the sites it had that allowed free downloads so it bypasses some loops. It took you to a whole other page (Ouo) if you were on their main page and clicked the links.

There are quite a few alternative watercolor sets that have come out since Procreate 5, too. The Big Wet Set by MattyB is also really nice, and the recently released Watercolor 2020 set from Tip Top Brushes is good if you want a more concise set of brushes.

Okay, so Procreate has some bugs/quirks. What software doesn't?

I see people talk up Clip Studio Paint, which has a ton of negative reviews on the app store resulting in a 3.2/5 average rating. What's the story there?

The only other app I really see people talking about when discussing Procreate alternatives is Artstudio Pro, which looks like it has a nice enough brush engine and other features, but the look of the UI is a turn off. Maybe it's worth trying.

Lastly (and I mention this mostly because Frankentoon makes brushes for it), Affinity Designer looks interesting. It's primarily a vector graphics program, however it can also handle raster graphics. It seems to have its fans. The brushes Frankentoon makes for it might push me to try it in the near future.

>Art Set 4
Pros: nice traditional simulating tools, very nice paper/canvas interaction with the individual mediums, very fun to draw in, cool palette system, neat file-based interface system where each file can have its own tools, palettes etc laid out, can have multiple instances of the same tool with different size, color, and so on, like simulating coloured pencils etc
Cons: bad palm rejection, no mirror image (can only mirror one layer), lacking editing features
>Paintstorm
Pros: fantastic brush engine, extremely configurable UI, on screen hotkeys for fast workflow, can apply masks to layer groups
Cons: slow as fuck, lacks editing features
>Infinite Painter
Pros: neat dry media tools out of the box
Cons: workflow is awful, takes multiple actions for what takes one everywhere else, zero advanced features, doodlecore app, can be nice to fuck around with, but you will never do anything remotely important in it
>affinity photo
Pros: very powerful editing tools, promising brush engine (haven’t fucked around with it too much)
Cons: weird design decisions, takes getting used to
>Medibang
Pros: animu oriented tool library if you like that
Cons: literally no way to make a brush that I found, you use what they have or you gtfo
>Sketchbook
Pros: the copic library, french curves, basically built for old school industry design workflow in digital
Cons: crippled Sketchbook Pro, and a abandonware at that, I used to love the desktop app, but they fucked it up
>ArtRage
another abandonware, literally years behind
>Adobe Fresco
I have no idea what the fuck this app is, it has VERY weird design decisions, like the same exact brush working as some sort of non-overlapping opacity brush on transparent pixels, but then working as a straight flow brush on filled pixels, and I have seen nothing that would illuminate the intended use of the thing
It doesn’t really simulate trad, it just works as a weird photoshop and I don’t understand who it is for

Serious contenders:
>Artstudio Pro
Pros: great brush engine, extremely fast, can handle big file sizes and brush sizes with no chugging, clean UI, can be modified for extremely fast workflow, fast colorpicking, can clip to folders, good editing tools, can favorite brushes, takes .abr AND .tpl, so brushes galore
Cons: no CMYK, shitty default brushes
>Procreate
Pros: best tablet UX/UI, built for ipad/pencil in mind, very neat tilt capabilities tuned to the pencil, fast workflow, thriving support market, it’s in, and it’s THE ipad app so tagging anything with procreate will get views easily
Cons: a hot fucking mess with bugs out the ass, bad antialiasing, airbrush banding, color artifacts popping up when painting, the above neat tilt capabilities are borked, the wet brush modes are fucking garbage, limited file size and layers
>Photoshop
Pros: Photoshop
Cons: Photoshop, the little touch hotkey thing is the complete opposite of what’s useful, you have to touch it, hold it, and then drag the finger to the edge in order to colorpick, which is something you sue twice a second, but you just touch it to erase which is something you do orders of magnitude less often
oh, and if you happen to drag your finger too far, it just cancels out the gesture, so fuck you
and of course, adobe knows best, so fuck configuring anything
note I haven’t touched it in months and they do update it fairly often, it was pretty barebones when I last used it, but they’re working on it, and this might be outdated
>CSP
Pros: CSP, good brush engine, good work capacity, large file and brush sizes, time savers if you’re doing comics, thriving (japanese) materials market
Cons: lacking editing tools, fucking slow as you go big

Does anyone here know how the drawing experience is with Affinity Designer? I draw horror art in a retro 80s comic book style with Procreate, using pencils, comic inkers, and markers + watercolors for color.

I've never used an art program that did vector stuff, and the ability to live preview how my strokes would look with different brushes sounds really cool. I'm accustomed to Procreate and Artstudio Pro, so I'm just wondering if Affinity Designer's drawing is as smooth as those.

Adobe draw is actually a super fucking useful tool when you pair it with illustrator. Unfortunately they made fresco and dropped it but it still works. The whole thing is super slept on, especially paired with adobe capture. They’re working on illustrator for iPad which is gonna be gold but no idea when it’s coming. Until then adobe draw is great for drawing stuff as vector then wirelessly sending it directly into illustrator to edit paths+do more.

Artstudio Pro can, but the masks are treated as layers (they’re technically treated as layers in all software, but they’re presented as their own layers as well here). In pic related, bottom to top:
>layer 5 and layer 6 are in a group
>the mask above layer 5 applies to layer 5
>layer 7 is a mask and applies to the entire group
>layer 8 is has a clipping mask, which applies to the masked group, ie whatever’s visible post masking and is in the group
>the adjustment layer is the same, applies to the the visible content of the group post masking and the previous clipped layer
>the top mask applies to the entire chain, which is based on the group, but doesn’t touch anything below the group
The only thing you can’t do right now is have a group with a clipping mask, but you can clip superior layers to a group.
The good thing about the setup is that you can easily move masks if you want to, but it can look a bit messy. There’s supposed to be a big update next month that will heavily change the ui, so not sure what will happen then.
Also, I just noticed you have nested groups in your pic, those work too, according to the usual hierarchy.

I also think Affinity Photo can do all those things, but the ui is very noob unfriendly, as in there’s nothing telling you how or even if you can perform certain actions, but it’s very good once you learn it, so I can’t check right now. For instance, there is literally no button or menu option to clip layers, you have to drop a layer to another layer.
The thing is an absolute beast for editing, though,

I don’t know if I communicated this across well, or maybe missed something, so if you have any questions, just ask

>The only thing you can’t do right now is have a group with a clipping mask, but you can clip superior layers to a group.
To clarify, you can have clipping masks within a layer, you just can’t have group 1 clipped to layer 1 as far as I know.

That said, I've noticed a lot of people on YouTube commenting how Procreate's brush engine feels "off" compared to other iPad art apps. I've noticed that people who prefer ArtStudio Pro or Infinite Painter tend to mention how much nicer their brush engines are.

anyone got/know of a procreate brush with a similar effect to this?
basically looking for a hard textureless (wet?) brush where multiple seperate strokes sort of blend together without overlapping like an opacity brush

Yeah, I’m worried they’re going full on meme territory instead of even attempting to take it towards workhorse/production end of the scale.
I don’t know if they just can’t get it any better than what they have or what, the brush engine being borked for 9 (nine) months and counting aside, the market isn’t what it was when procreate got into the limelight, there’s real competition now, and while procreate still mops the floor with them in the “feels right on a tablet” department, as far as workflow, size capacity and editing capability goes, procreate’s really lagging behind.
It’s a real shame too, because it really does feel right, and the integration of the pencil resulted in a really nice brush environment with focus on “traditional feeling” media, which is something you can’t really get anywhere else.

If ArtStudio Pro 3 gets some serious promotion in the right places when it's released, I think it will start chipping away at Procreate's popularity, given enough time.

Procreate's a good app, but I think a lot of that is due to how much promotion they receive. It certainly helps that Apple promotes them in their stores, for example.

Procreate also has a fairly slick UI that stays out of the way, but I've noticed that over time as they've added new features, a lot of those features end up being tucked away in menus and aren't particularly quick to access. ArtStudio Pro has a very Photoshop-like look to it (especially version 3) which might look cluttered, but it offers very quick access to anything you'd need.

We'll see what happens. Procreate is immensely popular and won't be losing its place as the #1 art app, but maybe if they had to contend with some real competition, they'd focus on fixing the bugs and quirks that you don't find in some of the other apps.

so... do you guys actually use these brushes?
I don’t know if I’m just not good enough to apply them or what, but I basically just use a pencil brush for sketching, a hard round, an airbrush and an inker, rarely a texture brush of some sort and that’s it. Dude who posted them here - You'll want to download each .brushset file individually rather than as part of a .zip of the larger folder, this is because iOS has a bad habit of automatically unzipping everything it detects as a zip. It’s actually because of google drive. When you click download on google drive it automatically zips every file into its own zip. The only way to stop this happening is to download each file individually or download google backup and sync, set a folder to sync on your desktop and then go on google drive, click shared with you, hi light the file, press shift and Z and add it to the file that’s auto synced to your desktop.\

I'm here. I was banned for a few days. Honestly, people should be mirroring whatever they've shared or things that they've found that they think are worth sharing, because you never know if someone's going to complain and get my account taken down or whatever. At some point, if we get enough people mirroring things on their own Mega or Google Drive accounts, we can make a pastebin with all the links or something.
