Why You Should Copy Anime:
https://i.imgur.com/zNDsyF0
https://youtu.be/t_IODIIYAe0

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

Vigne's eyes are too close to each other, trapezius/shoulder should be more slender, arms are a little fat, neck's width should be thinner.
Some of the drawings are slanted.
>>4824293
Hair looks flat, try Pin2d's method of dividing the hair.
Take note of the alignment of facial features. Example, (assuming this is supposed to be in front view) the topmost right drawing's eyebrows are not properly align with the eyes, also the neck is not centered properly.
>>4824474
Hands are too small. Eyes have wrong sizes, look at anime pictures with the same angle as yours and see which one should be larger.
>>4824559
Flat hair, there should be overlapping lines with varying thickness too make it look 3d. Try pin2d's hair breakdown.

"Bottom-up angle" (I don't know the proper term) looks a little weird, but that angle is a nightmare to draw most of the time. Like her chin looks like it's drooping to the right
Is that supposed to be her nose or her mouth in the top-down angle?

not necessarily, how can architects draw buildings they've never seen before? Or how can people start inventing cartoons and things that don't exist in the real world?

Imaginative drawing isn't about regurgitating your memory, per se. Sometimes it is. But really its more akin to playing with legos, arranging simple forms to make something new. You can draw wild poses you've never seen before.

Started drawing after a 2 month lapse in my studies. Been going through Hampton but started with Fun With A Pencil and practicing line art with the early Drawabox stuff. Goal for now has been focusing hard on what makes good lineart, and I think I'm starting to get it. Started all of this stuff in the beginning of COVID quarantines as a goal of something I want to come out of this year having gotten better at something.

Anyway I definitely know there's a bunch of flaws in these next three pictures, but compared to where I was a few months ago, struggling to even make a fucking appealing face and doing Loomis heads, I'm feeling kind of stoked that I'm making stuff now that I actually like to look at after I'm done.

wasn’t sure where to post this, but it fits here well enough. where do you start with constructing a fantasy setting in terms of both reference and developing the technical skill? i ask because i suffer from severe art block, so i want to try flexing my creativity with what i want to actually draw for once. for specifics, i’ve always had the idea of a comic series influenced by princess mononoke aesthetics, such as the time period. how would i learn to draw the type of clothes the characters wear, for example?

Is this circle technique a decent way to draw characters or is it a trap?

Should I start trying my hand at shading this or learn proportions/basics first?
My intuition tells me that just going at it is usually a good idea, but maybe that's a trap and you have to learn everything separately?

Also, if I don't really care about being able to draw on paper, should I still do Drawabox on paper or is it better to do that digitally then?

There's no should or have to. Do whatever you feel is more important for you. DAB is a meme though.

>Is this circle technique a decent way to draw characters or is it a trap?
If it does help you then go for it, but I don't understand how it's helping there. Every artist does things differently. It doesn't matter.

Guess I'll try it and see how it goes.

>I don't understand how it's helping there
In the end I ended up pretty far from the circles but the idea is first just drawing some circles and then doing the sketch and roughly conforming to the shapes.

I just googled "how to draw a loli" and this is the only thing that wasn't the owl drawing meme.

Born to die isn't bad but I don't think he was being very serious there. So, the circle things are just to show you the proportions. I'm sure he doesn't bother with that. Did you try sketching the body first or did you jump straight into lineart?

I habe no idea what the difference is. That guide is the entirety of my art education post high school.
I did corrections on a lot of lines and for the long ones I first made them up of multiple ones before replacing or merging them.

If you want to learn how to draw people, then pick up a figure drawing book. Personally I prefer Hampton. Understand that it takes a long time before you can draw good figures.

Seeing you're completely new you can try going to twitch art or pixiv sketch lives to get an idea of how other people indeed draw.

Jfc anon do yourself a favor and actually look up Hampton figure drawing and watch a video about how Bridgman does it as well. You are wasting time trying to figure out methods on your own as a beginner. There is no need to re-invent the wheel, there are multiple tried and true methods to construction. Only after you understand and master one of these that works for you, should you feel like adjusting it to suit your style.

When working through textbooks (in this case Hampton), do I copy what's in the book or how do I internalize this stiff?
I feel like if I did another sketch now I'd be thinking about the spine more but I probably forgot 80% of what was written in the first chapter.

Did this from what I felt looked right.

Is there an actual technique you can use aside from just airbrushing and hoping it looks good?

What's a good book on shading that's useful for anime?

Also, is there no way to save colors in CSP?

Is this a genuin question?

Just a circle with a spike for a nose added to it and the mouth 1/3 down.
You can almost just symbol this, hence why I used circle instead of sphere/ball.

Look at what other artists do. Some even have VODs.

Look for jap tutorials on e-hentai.

The shading/coloring is the least of your issues. Even if you have amazing rendering technique it will look like shit if the thing your coloring looks bad to begin with. Your lines aren't conveying any sense of form at all.

I noticed, but I'm still kinda surprised it's recognizable as a humanoid. Since it's my second figure drawing and my first on digital I just wanted to do the whole process from drawing the lineart to coloring/shading once to see what I'm getting into. It's honestly much more fun than I expected.

On the topic of form, will I learn anything by trying to draw interesting poses and perspectives or should I stick to boring poses at first to learn the basic body proportions and shapes?

I can see that the perspective is off but what does that have to do with rendering? For that matter, what does rendering mean in this context? I only know it from 3D.
Are you saying he doesn't bother learning the correct perspective drawing because he can "cover it up" with an excess of shading detail?

torso seems to a have decent flow, but the rest of the body looks a bit stiff.

I know hands can be very tricky to draw, specially in that position, but you should work on them more. Also look for the region where the shoulder connects with the breasts.

careful with overdoing shading, sometimes it's better to simplify shadows in order to look more appealing.
