this dad is proficient with their markers, they keep a pretty clean (not quiet yet totally confident) line in their work, which looks like it's aiming to develop a style fit for cartoons, which it does quite well and is steadily improving.
i'd say he's high /beg/ and i'm below that so not sure what to suggest, i would love to see a proper finished piece on nice paper with confident inking, colouring and shading, good composition etc. i think they would love to try ink sometime as they look to be a lot into cartoons. it can be really satisfying.

Oh wow. I didn't realize you could read that book and still fail like that. I really don't know how to help someone like Indigo. Your advice to copy reference and focus on accuracy is exactly what Keys to Drawing asked him to do and he still failed, pic related. That's just sad.

You've convinced me that Indigo read sticky. But I still don't think advice to "read sticky" is bad. It helped me. I think that indigo just have some serious trouble with reading comprehension or just really, really rushed it; even the best possible guide won't help someone like that.

I've read the sticky so many times it's bookmarked and so far I've gone though keys to drawing, fun with a pencil, figure drawing for all it's worth (which I'm doing a second time), and drawing on the right side of the brain. Also currently doing Drawabox and Bridgman. Honestly I realize I have no natural talent at art and if I want to get anywhere I need to study up.

Yeah I think that's the big problem, for a lot of various reasons I didn't really start making art until a couple of years ago so I have a LOT of catching up to do compared to folks who recognized their passion for it early on. Sad that's it means It'll probably take me a good decade before I really start making high quality work like they are, but I'll take that over meaning I'm just doomed forever.

I would love to do something like that and I actually do know some places where I could where I live, but it tends to be very expensive and I feel like it would be wasted to throw that much money at it when I'm not even intermediate (this is also the same reason I use garbage materials like paper btw). Also if I'm being completely honest, if I did in-person stuff I'd be putting my name and face to my art and that's really embarrassing when I know I'm going to be by far the weakest in the group.

I promise I will do it someday, but I'd like to at least get more comfortable with the fundies and be making decent quality output first.

I have a bunch of old journals I've had lying around for years I'm trying to use up, which is what you're seeing. There's a lot so it'll probably be a while, but once they're gone I'll buy some proper notebooks. Also I've admittedly been a bit lazy about it lately but I try not to use them for challenges since I feel like those are a time to really show off completed, high quality (within the best of one's ability) work.

I want to put forward some thoughts.

When you put yourself out anywhere be it public, blog, writing, photos or art, you expose yourself to the the unknown. This in itself is a difficult thing for some, including myself ( hence why I'm on DAD at all). If you are going to take this further that a hobby this is an inevitability we all have to come to terms with, there are some who will be upset just by your mere existence. Acclimating ourselves will help us develop being more comfortable with eyes actively on our work. I would argue that discerning what comments are productive and which are malicious is a skill I think a lot of us don't commonly think about.

This is one of the benefits and the downsides of being anonymous, the biggest being people can speak their mind freely. When posting with an alias you tend to hold back because you have your image on the line and on the opposite end your tenure could sway opinions strictly on standing alone rather than whats being said. Sometimes, even in the harshest comments you can find some truths.

This is a very fair point, but can be unreasonable when talking about Ick. When individuals nitpick seasoned artists on the smallest minutiae to invalidate anything, there's no way we can reasonably solve this. One last thing for those being selected, they are suggestions and not gospel. Try your best not to personally and remember its for the benefit of your art, hobbyist or aspiring.

Indigo, I really don't know if I'm in a place to give any advice given my current skill level, but here's my two cents. I recommend you go through both Dorian Iten's "accuracy guide" and "how to draw". Then use the skills to draw from reference. Not once or twice or even a few times, but relentlessly, using these new skills and the old ones you learned in k2d. Then compare your mistakes to the reference, by overlaying your paper over the computer screen/book and tracing over your drawing with a red pen if you have to. Don't ever settle for "good enough" or "that looks close enough". Your hard work is admirable. Stay strong, friend.
