Doing that method helped me improve faster, I "failed faster" and was able to make more mistakes to learn from. If you're beg you will get diminishing returns from noodling on one drawing for hours. Though it is important to make finished pieces to learn how to put what you learned together, and polish. It also helped me expand my visual library faster.

I can see the point, but if you draw a lot of 5 min drawings you will get really good at 5 min drawings. I am sure that there is a point where you start to getting diminished returns but 5 min is just too little.

Definitely not a halfway decent experiment but I have been practicing very seriously for the past few years. I am trying to master figures and portraits, mostly drawing for now and some oil paint.
I find doing both timed and untimed work to be equally useful practice. When you work with a timer you are practicing gesture mostly, no time for real details on anything in less than 10 minutes. You practice details when you work on the same piece for 8 hours or more.
When you aren't drawing, reflect on your progress. Compare your art over time. Obviously this sounds super basic but part of the process of mastering anything is becoming efficient at pracicting. It's like a gradient ascenf problem in math terms, you stand somewhere on the slope of skill and you are trying to find a path to the top as fast as possible but you can only see a short distance away.
Anyways I rarely do any practice sketches from a reference on less than a 5 minute timer, but I should. I did this self portrait in charcoal yesterday, pretty stoked in it. Took like 4-5 hours. Kind of looks like a startrek portrait because of my signature.

I don’t know what constitutes details for you, but you absolutely should have all of anatomy, definitely the core shadows and even reflected light down in 10 minutes, medium permitting, assuming the figure is up to about the size of your hand and not huge. Gesture is 30 seconds - 1 minute territory, everything past that is developing the figure.

His point is that when you stop to think about what you are drawing you are wasting time that could otherwise be spent drawing aka improving. Ergo whatever method results in the maximum pencil-on-paper time for you is the best method, he recommends 5 minute sketches because they're 0 investment and give you no time to get bored of what you're drawing.
Personally I don't entirely agree with this approach but I'm also not getting paid to teach so what the fuck do I know.

if you're an illustrator/concept with a heavy semi-near realism go to Feng, if you're an animator or a cartoonist who is leaning toward stylization go to Weston. If you want to have both where the Mangaka approach with semi-realism but also stylized in an angle then you have to study both, and also look into Murata.
