This is a thread to discuss all kinds of digital drawing hardware: non-display graphics tablets, pen display tablets, portable tablets and more.

>What should I buy?
State your:
>Budget
>Location
>Type (display? non-display? portable?)
>Size (in inches)
>Other information
>Previous equipment
>If you have any, state your preferences regarding surface texture (paper emulation, smooth etc)

Anons with corresponding tablets can provide input as to the user experience of those tablets.

>Recommended display tablets:
Wacom cintique 22 for all round features and quality (colour accuracy)
XP Pen artist 15.6 pro for price/performance value
Samsung Galaxy Tab S6 Lite for a budget portable tablet.

>Screenless tablets:

>XP-Pen Deco Pro Medium
>Huion Inspiroy H1161
>Wacom Intuos Pro 2013 line

Tech and standards for screenless tablets have plateaued over the last 2 years, so there is little real variation between same dimension products other than surface texture.

Anyone have first hand experience with xp pen screen tablets? Is the hard to detect soft strokes thing real?

>> No.4797736

not xp pen, but i tried huion which is basically the same thing
it's an issue that you can somewhat mitigate by fiddling with the pressure curve, but yeah it's real

Thinking of getting a Wacom One, Cintiq 16, or wait for a new iPad Pro. Use case is mostly lineart and basic colouring and not much digital painting if at all... besides a smaller (but sharper ppi screen), what are the cons of the Wacom One, or should I look at bigger tablets like the Cintiq 22? Will the lines be noticeably jaggy on a Cintiq 22?

>> No.4797748

>>4797737
If you absolutely, positively need to get yourself a budget cintiq, try to get the 16" one at least desu. Wacom one just doesn't have all the stuffs that makes a cintiq, well, a cintiq (screen, pen, etc, they're even worse than the chinese equivalents)

Do you have experience with the old 22HD? >>4797686

>> No.4797762

>>4797706
ehh kinda? really depends on how soft your soft stroke really is but just like another anon mentioned, you can just adjust the pressure curve to fix that.
honestly, i never really had any issues with soft strokes but then again, i dunno if my soft strokes are really considered soft strokes, if that makes sense.

>> No.4797790

>>4797748
I’m only considering the Wacom One because lineart looked jaggy on my 15.6 inch laptop in comparison to my iPad Pro 2017. I fear the Cintiq 16 would be the same since they are the same pixel density. Considering the 22 because it is big so I could probably mitigate the pixelation by zooming in.

>>4797999
Absolutely, wacom actively discourages people from buying the budget options and at the same time increases the value of their Pro tablets by means of designing the budget ones to be sub par. Thin, light pens with 4k levels of pressure, diagonal jitter and shitty pressure control. If wacom tablets are truly your only option where you live, I would advise biting the bullet and going for the pro, but if virtually any other option exists then the intuos pro isnt a very smart purchase. A Deco pro medium offers the exact standards as the intuos pro medium, and costs even less than the non pro intuos models.

/beg/ here, my laptop's really old so i don't really want to rely on it too often. if i'm not a professional or have plans to go pro anytime soon is there a reason for me to invest in a *drawing* tablet if i can get a normal one secondhand?
i'm guessing your average ipad's gonna feel way less intuitive to work with than a dedicated drawing tablet but i see people using them on social media all the time so surely it can't be that bad if i just want something to get into digital art with, right? it's not like i'm gonna have any games or other apps on it aside from the default ones

The cheap wacoms have a cheap shitty pen that is stiff as a rock and has zero travel. It literally measures an force on a squeezed piece of plastic, no springs no movement, feels like shit.

The more advanced Intuos Pro pens have a spring loaded tip that actually moves like a good fountain pen would. feels MUCH better and allows for fine control.

The Chink pens use the same ideas and patents as the Intuos pro pen but they are slightly sloppier made the nib wobbles a bit and it requires i tiny tiny little bit of pressure before it even detects anything at all. It doesn't require you to push hard, but some super light touches on the tablet might not register.

Now the reason to have 8000 levels of pressure is actually so you could have more freedom tweaking the shit out of your pressure curve. if you're a super duper light toucher you could actually only use a fraction of the scale like define your pressure curve from 0 to 2000 and now your pen is literally 4 times more sensitive and you still have 2000 levels to smoothly work with.

My recommendation would be to start with either a small display(13" range) or a large screen less. Theres no point in throwing wacom level money at something you're not sure may be right for you. The money you waste on a tablet you won't use could have been spent on art supplies you would have made use of, in that sense.

So if you're planning on dabbling before a big purchase, Deco Pro or Intous Pro will be safe to get. They won't break the bank, are great overall quality for general work, and have solid resale value on eBay if it doesn't work out.
If you like digital but screen less isn't for you, you can make that decision later and have a backup tablet for worst case scenarios.

So I already have a Surface Pro 6 with the same generation Pen, which I've started drawing on. I've heard it has problems with wobbly lines, which at first I dismissed as me being new to art. It certainly doesn't feel as smooth as paper. Does anyone have any experience to say one way or the other? Image done with Krita.

If it actually is trouble with drivers or the pen, I'm wondering if there's a way to solve the issue. Otherwise I'm considering picking up something bigger.

Anyone have a good recommendation for a tablet if all i’m interested in is getting good at digital colouring? I do all my line work traditional so i’d be scanning stuff and then doing very little touching up. The tablet would pretty much be exclusively for colouring rather than creating original work. I have no idea if that means I should or shouldn’t get a screenless tablet or if an ipad is bad / good. I’ve only done traditional colouring until now although I have used photoshop for editing photos so i’m comfortable with the platform. Budget is probably $1000 and down.

Looking for tablet

I've been using a surface pro 4 but it's old and heats up bad. also gives me bad posture. I was leaning towards a screen-less tablet since I wouldn't have to look down at it. But I'm considering all options. I was looking at the XP-Pen Deco 03 Wireless. It doesn't need to be wireless, but I thought that was a cool feature. Just looking around to see what other options I might be missing. I've watched a lot of youtube review comparisons but wondering what you guys think. If you really can't afford a cintiq or intous pro get a screen less huion. Low end Wacom products are even worse than huion.

Quality:
1- Cintiq and intous pro
2- Huion screenless
3- Huion screens and low end Wacom.

So if you can't go with 1 go with 2. Huion screen tablets are plagued with issues. Besides it's risky. Spending $70 on a huion screen less is not the same as spending $500+.

Huion really needs to fix their nibs and tilt calibration. Tilt doesn't work as intended and causes offset.

But I got a good 4 years out of it rendering videos, photoshop, blender, etc. In my book it's 100x better than any ipad because it's a real OS with all the real programs. Very good, works like you expect it to and if you're just a hobbyist you probably won't have a problem with it. 120hz screen is awesome, Procreate is a very intuitive app and in general it's a joy to work on. Drawing on glass feels weird tho, so I recommend a paperlike, my enjoyment went up a lot once I got it (and I used my Ipad for over a year without it).

I don't have experience with cintiqs and such, I imagine their larger screen sizes and more ergonomic pen make them nicer, but honestly the Ipad is just very nice. thanks for the insight anon, I have/had 3 different tablets throughout the course of my drawing years and let me tell you I'm overly disappointed with almost nearly all of them.

The first one I got primarily for playing osu, I think it was the most basic of tablets and cheapest of tablets so I get that, but then again I bought the intuos pro I believe for about 300$ ( was on sale) and it worked well, much better than the crappy osu tablet, and probably even better than the squeaky ass huion cintiq I got for nearly $1000 but after about 2 years or so it just won't work as it completely shut down.

Decided to buy a huion cintiq, and as some anon above mentioned it really does make these cheap squeaky noises, and really does feel like you're drawing on plastic. Bought it because it was cheap compared to the wacom.. Which I kind of regret now.

Anyways yeah thanks for the insight and might seriously go for the ipad pro this time. One thing though, I suspect you need to buy the more advanced drawings apps like csp and procreate right? Could you draw even without buying anything at all with the base drawing application that just comes for free with the purchase of the ipad?

Aside from that though I like their drivers better and I'm a sucker for express keys and scroll wheels on my tablets

I was about to return that fucker but figured I'd at least try messing with the stylus before I did and it ended up fixing all of my problems with it. >Have you calibrated your pen anons?
I just tried the potentiometer has nothing to do with the initial activation force BUT It just helped me improve the tapering and make my lines end super sharp.

I had two pens for my Deco Pro. The first one came outta the box and it had an issue that it was detecting like 600 minimal pressure. It's not just the activation force, it just spikes between zero and 600. Then I dropped it a couple times over a year and it started spiking from 0 to 4000 and became unusable.

My new pen arrived spiking between 0 and 300 and 300 out of 8000 is good enough, no objections. I tried calibrating the potentiometer right now and I can tell it doesn't fix the initial activation force.
The potentiometer changes sensitivity and this initial spike, making it higher or lower, but the force to actuate the minimal possible pressure is exactly the same the difference is wheter your pen starts drawing at 10% pressure or at 1%.

Also you don't need to disassamble the casing. You only need to carefully pry the rocker button out with a small flat screwdriver and you can access the potentiometer.

As for the initial pressure it's just something you get used to.

These are the issues that the tuning screw fixes btw. And for newer models of xp-pen stylus, you don't need to disassemble the stylus to get to it. All you need to do is pop off the side button (by pulling straight up from the stylus) and you'll find the screw with the red ring around it. You'll need a glasses repair kit screwdriver or something similarly sized to turn the screw. Do small turns while testing the stylus in between turns, and stop when your issues are gone.
