Don't draw symbol eyes/nose/mouth like that. squint your eyes draw what you see, and if it helps use image manipulation so you can find better shapes. note using binarization/posterization the eyes/nose/mouth can be abstracted into graphic shapes instead of lines; it omits unnecessary detail, yet still reads well.
by comparison in your drawings:
>the reflected light on the bottom lip is overstated
>the occluded area of the eyeball is overstated
>the lines on the nose are overstated
>the left side (our left) of the face is overstated
overstated meaning too high contrast. generally avoid lines and hard edges for a 'younger' look. your medium doesn't really help, but compare the value gradients on the cheeks/jaw

in terms of form,
for younger skulls, the forehead is more rounded. the plane of the eyebrow ridge should protrude under the corners of that spherical shape. the eyelid should also be more rounded/portruding, and be lighter in value. etc etc you can play spot the difference for yourself.

I think there are a couple of issues: the accuracy of the proportions (line) and the values.

Like others said, practice breaking down the head into simple shapes. Find the main anchor points and measure. Here's a good starting point https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zbykmKopBrc

For values, it helps to squint or step way back to see the overall big value shapes. I sometimes convert my image to black and white so I don't get distracted by color. The value shapes on her face are off and make her look a bit like an old person.

Hope that helps.

I've been grinding out basic forms through tracing poses for like 2 weeks and haven't actually made any art. What the fuck do I do after that? People are extremely confusing especially when they say to just draw like the scribbles I make aren't so shit they aren't worth finishing.

I obviously don't want to make anything bad, so I don't finish these traces, but I also have no idea when I know I'll be good enough to actually draw a character and not just trace a vague form, and basically every place I go just says "just make something bad" like I'm going to do that instead of just wait till I can make something good. I'm still /beg/ so don't take my word for this, but it seems that the more you draw, the more complete the images become. But unless you're some kind of wizard, you never get full images, just bits and pieces that become more clear as you recall 'oh, I've drawn something like this before'.

That's why virtually everyone good uses a mountain of references. You don't need imagination, you just need something like 'okay, I'll draw the pose from image A, with the character from image B, wearing something like the clothes in C, in a background from D'. Good copying is half the battle.

I don't want to parrot 'feel the form' at either of you but I think a quick explanation may help you:
>feel the form
imagine how it would feel to be doing the action you are trying to draw - for example, raise one arm above your head. Do you feel your shoulder bunch up? Muscles stretch underneath? Other shoulder lowering? Try to convey that FEELING in your gesture.

Another example: try putting your arms in front of you and leaning forward - you should feel it in your back (stretch) and abdomen (compress).

When you compress one muscle, an opposite muscle will expand. This movement, along with the general direction, is what we're trying to capture when we do gestures. S curves are generally pretty stable, while C curves may indicate some action or emphasis. This isn't always the case but might be a helpful tool

>Jumping to anatomy, form & edges
In short gestures we don't care too much about the finer details. Once you get to this point you start moving from gesture drawing to figure drawing. This isn't a bad thing but it should be an active decision. Anatomical landmarks like the 7th cervical vertebra, shoulder blades, iliac crest, nipples, belly button and so on (think boney landmarks mostly) are okay and if they help you with proportions or perspective.

Here's a gesture challenge if you want to have a go, everyone's welcome:
>gesture of 30 seconds or more
>No straight lines: try to draw only with C and S curves
>Single lines - try not to chicken scratch
>No features or shading past the bare minimum

i cant tell if youre trying to draw a cartoon or realism. if its a cartoon its good. if its realism, your shapes on everything are wrong. if you're worried about values, you barely gave any contrast. and its weird to have an eye with no lashes and no highlights. there would always be detail in the corners of the eye, in the iris and highlights in the pupil at least. also you didn't post a reference so no one has anything to compare this to to tell you if your values are "good." maybe you nailed it but you had a bad reference. also i think the shape of your eye is throwing me off. in general the inside of the bottom lid is higher than the outside and vice versa for the top lid.

I think the same friend. Back when I started I used to think hard work was everything and talent was a lie since I've achieved a lot of things in life through hard work but now few years down the road Im terrible compared to all the people who started at around the same time and my belief system crashed into the ground
>>4799526
>as long as you are willing to sacrifice other things. If you put the work in consistently and work through the pain, you WILL make it. If you don't make it, I'll let you kill me
I did this and the only thing left for me at the moment is pain, constant pain. Im gonna keep drawing everyday because it became basically the only thing I do besides work. This is definetly true to some extent. I mean if you're born mentally retarded you can't be a mathematician. If you don't have the ACTN3 protein you probably can't be an elite sprinter. According to this study I found figure drawing was as heritable as general intelligence at age 4, which is huge. If the heritability of drawing ability works like the heritability of intelligence, it would mean that by adulthood most of the variance in drawing ability between people can be explained by genes. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4232264/

I think this one is an improve already, it feels like it's coming forward because of the weight in the feet and hands

pic related I had a go but turned slightly - front-on gesture is difficult to capture.

The feel the form things mostly comes with practice sorry. I'd also suggest for a more academic approach doing some research into 'contraposto', it's a concept pretty closely related to gesture and has to do with shifting the shoulders and hips slightly to improve appeal.

I think that looks really good, anon. I couldn't possible draw like that in such short amount of time. Maybe some limbs get a bit too symmetrical or proportions go off a little, but they look nice and only thing you need to do imo is keep practicing. That's just me though, I hope someone who knows their shit shares their thoughts. You could try drawing the body in a more simplified fashion instead of worrying so much about contours, to focus on gesture and volumes, if you think you're not getting much out of your current approach. Not sure what else to say. Keep at it.

Absolute /beg/ here (less than 3 weeks. Friend gave me his old wacom tablet to mess around with and I've been following guides like reading loomis, and practicing my fundies. I also practice drawing lines to develop muscle memory, but I have no idea how you build muscle memory. Pic related is my sample, a couple circles are Ok I think, but most of them are pretty bad, well no problem I'm starting out that's fine. The problem I have is I can't "feel" or "tell" the difference in my hand when I draw a good or bad circle, so how does doing this over and over again help me build muscle memory. I'm also doing vertical zebra strokes and s-curves. Anyone have any good resources that can explain this to me, or even give me some pointers?

Don't waste your time with circle and line grinding. You'll burn out.

Put the tablet away for now and draw on paper. You will develop faster without the digital crutches and you're less likely to be distracted.

It's difficult to critique these since it's just floating bits.

The nose isn't functional, and with top down lighting the shadows on the bottom would be more intense.

No clue what angle the middle one is at. It seems like a lower angel, then the nostrils would be longer since the bottom of your nose is like 85% nostril.

The eyes is good, value in the tear duct should be darker, and the iris is comparatively flat looking, as well as lacking the proper light values on the sclera.

Improve at your own pace and stop comparing yourself to other people. My lines used to look similar to yours, but I started drawing bigger and started using a mechanical pencil. Drawing bigger helps to draw from the elbow and shoulder and the lines look a bit cleaner if you’re working with a finer tip. You can try mapping out the shadows next time so they don’t look so random.

Pick a subject, and draw it. Find somewhere you can get consistent critique.

Adjust it every day based on critique. Make sure you know the forms of your subject.

Don't fall for the hard round brush meme. Painting-wise I used a mix of an oil paint themed brush, a blending brushed, and an airbrush with blending enabled. There's no shame in using the tools available to you.

I use CSP, so I'm not sure of a PS equivalent, but don't be afraid to mess around with your brush settings and experiment. You're more likely to get good results if you like the brushes you use.

Missing the back of his head. Ear is spaghetti. Face looks pretty good but the mouth is a but of a cop out. What's your goal?

>>4799258
Not bad but torso is a bit too small - would be alright if everything else was thin but it looks mismatched to the rest of the figure. Legs are a bit too long which is a pretty common thing for aesthetics but in this case highlights that you're not confident with the anatomy down there.

>>4799296
Most of these are good. Be really careful with the extreme angles, these ones seem to be where you miss the mark - the corners often seem to shrink in instead of stretching like they should.

>>4799352
Do you post on /DAD/? You might enjoy it.

Lots of symbols in here and you are missing a brow. Ear should extend to the bottomof the nose roughly, it is too small. Hair tends to have some form, especially when pulled back like that, so you might benefit from exaggerating the form and bulking it out from the flat line of the scalp.

>>4799355
I'm pretty sure this is bait? If it's not please tell me and I'll give you a crit. Please don't be offended.

>>4799363
Looks pretty good to me friend. I'd suggest working on your line economy a bit. There is a degree of rotation that I'm not sure is intentional but skews the perspective. The traps come up too high on the neck also.

>>4799373
These are nice. Don't be afraid to push dark values and make your people lumpy. Guy on the left is missing his far cheek, one of the right is missing an ear, all three seem to be somewhat diminished around the jowl. If I were to give you one area for improvement, it would probably be contour/silhouette to improve accuracy to your refs.

>>4799386

Values make it hard to read - I had to move into photoshop to be able to read any details. Torso anatomy is good, if a bit extreme, but hands and feet both need work. Horns don't appear to connect to the head. The detail on the pants leave something to be desired compared to the rest of the piece, seems like a rush job. Overall pretty cool though.

>>4799444
Tracing is okay but you need to be more conscious of what you're doing - there are some very clear inaccuracies here that should exist if you're literally drawing on top of something else. If you're going to trace, I'd recommend real humans and not this specific model as it's not anatomically accurate.

>>4799447
Hello Sad, I'm dad. This looks pretty good, some of your hatching is nice (the fold in the undershirt particularly stands out). Why are you sad?

>>4799471
Top starts excellently but lower down the shadow feels inconsistent. Don't be afraid to push your cast shadows and introduce another value by hatching or something similar.

>>4799494
This is very good but a few comments: head doesn't seem to align with the rest of the image, this is most glaring on the helmet which tipped me off the the rest of it. Eye on the left is both slightly too large and slightly too high. Lower half of the body also seems slightly misaligned. Perspective in general is just a bit off in a few areas once you really look closely. It's a bit strange that most elements are painty and then the lighter areas seem to reintroduce lines. There also aren't a lot of areas of rest in the art, it's very overwhelming to look at.

I mean this is a nice way but is this photobashed? Feng Zu did a video a while back that might help you cover the seams if this is the case. Otherwise I'm very sorry. Overall very cool though.

Ninja man spooked. He's missing a bit of mass off the top of his head. The chin seems like an odd choice but I can see that it's deliberate because the constructions seem to be in approximately correct area. Eyes are almost there but the shape is a little off and the pupils appear to be facing different directions.

>>4799571
It's okay to not know. If you're really struggling with it, pick something before you start. Personally I am a big fan of doodling until I work it out but in general my art's better if I think about it first.

>>4799607
Either works and ideally you should be able to do both. I'd argue that rebuilding the form is more difficult (but more beneficial) than 2d copying but they both have their place in learning to draw.

>>4799753
>>4799761
Pics?

>>4799822
Draw what you like and use books to help you. You don't know what you don't know until you know.

>>4799901
The painting is there but I think you need to dial it back and work more in the sketch phase - Think of forms, anatomy and contours before you start painting.

>>4799989
I often look confused by my sketchbook. Try to connect up your lines - the anatomy also needs some work. Perspective is actually alright though good work.

>>4800113
Keep going - you're almost there. It's hard to get into the habit of finishing things and it's nice to have something to look back on in the future. If you're not enjoying it though, just drop it and move on.

>>4800217
Clavicle is a bit high and kind of symbolly. The neck doesn't really taper out like that, the lines sort of merge with the traps and disappear. The way you outlined the nose makes it look like it's pointing off to the right. Chest seems like an afterthough and you would probably start to see the tapering off of the pecs before the end of the image. Lines are very nice though and the rendering on the face is good too.

>> No.4802437

>>4802436

(4/?)

>>4800261
This is cool. Only real comment is that the highlights over the lines are a bit intense and distracting and the head seems a little bit disjointed from the neck.

>>4800267
Pretty neat but can't comment on the accuracy because I'm not familiar with the subject. The elements you adapted from human anatomy flow nicely but the legs might benefit from more attention, and the neck could connect nicer to the head.

>>4800431
Pretty cute. Body seems a little to thin and the anatomy could use some work, particularly where parts connect - neck/shoulders/elbows/knees. Agree with the other anon - practice hands and once you've got the hang of it, it's hard to forget. You might even enjoy it.

>>4800896
Lines are very nice. Head is a bit uncanny - the chin doesn't line up with everything else, or the sketch line placement is a bit off. Not sure what's happening below the knees but I admire the construction. Anatomy is mostly pretty good but the pecs are in three 'strands' one of which inserts closer to the bicep, which might help connect the torso to the arms.

>>4800997
Pretty cute. It might come from the ref, but the far leg doesn't connect very well and the front leg is a noodle. The foot also is out of perspective. Back has a weird break in flow and anatomically doesn't connect very well with the frontmost arm.

Just saw the ref - in your drawing you might be able to minimise some of these issues by incorporating shadow or contours to guide the form.

>>4801038
The perspective is very good but the simplified model you're using for the body is inaccurate and bring you down. Check out loomis (unironically) or proko's robo skelly.

>>4801057
Not bad but the rendering seems uninformed and a bit random. What you're doing here is called 'pillow shading' and should be avoided and it takes away from the depth and perspective. Background would be fine as a solid colour, right now it doesn't match with the character and seems like it's floating.

>> No.4802439

>>4801151
Assuming this should be rotated 90 degrees clockwise.
Overall, pretty good. There's some chicken scratching that is bringing you down a bit and leaving the head off hurt the drawing as well - you don't have to draw the head but you should close of your lines to show the form. I think this is probably a product of your ref image - it's very loose and not one I'd recommend to study from. That said it is cool and I can see why you picked it.

>>4801274
Cute
Good luck on the next 10,000

>>4801306
These are very nice but the perspective on the one on the right as a bit weird - I think this probably comes from the large eye on the left. Still very good.

>>4801344
this is cute but the lines are very indecisive. Perspective on top right is very nice. Hat on the lower left is a bit too big. The likeness on the top two is very consistent but the bottom one looks like a different person.

This is cute. I'd like to see it rendered.

Study what you like to draw - if you're not sure gestures, figures, perspective and construction are all good topics to dive in to.

Good start but the cast shadow should be more extreme: cast shadow is a 2d projection of the shape calculated from where the light hits the edges of the shape. You are also missing a core shadow (dark line between the dark and light), bounce light (surface bouncing some light back on to the bottom of the shape) and a highlight. Proko has a good video about this in his basics playlist

Chin and the angle of the jaw imply a slight turn to the left (our right), which isn't reflected in the details on top.The overall shape of the head and the details are good but together they don't quite line up.

Is that your drawing? Don't want to crit if it's not and sus based on file name.

Drawabox is prescriptive, if you follow the instructions it will tell you exactly how much to do. Don't skip the challenges, they really hammer in the concepts.

Keys is good, I would recommend practicing until you get it, then move on. If you struggle with the next thing, go back.

Loomis is very good however Proko has shortened the content into a video that is significantly less boring. Give that a go and see how you do. You may need to work on the slower pace of the books. Fun with a pencil less important than head and hands if you are really desperate to avoid.

Not bad. I think if you rendered the shadows you could remove some of the extra lines which are taking away a bit from the image.

Arm needs some TLC. Face is relying on symbols rather than forms. Breast is inaccurate. The shape of the head is good and the facial proportions are also nice. Is this Meg Griffin minus the hat?

>>4801746
This is looking good, the improvement is very noticeable. I think you would benefit from refining the neck or cleaning up the cut off so it looks more deliberate and less like an afterthough.

No complaints. This is nice, the lines are clean and the perspective is pretty good.

Skulls are complicated objects. Try working closely from a reference. Alternatively, I would recommend a construction method like loomis first and then superimposing a skull on top/inside.

Taking a break now I've been here for a long time and now the thread is retired. Sorry if anyone was skipped it's not a diss.

Oh I've tried, I'm just terrible at it. Gotta keep up the work.

> If I were to give you one area for improvement, it would probably be contour/silhouette to improve accuracy to your refs

Thank you, anon, I'll look into some exercises to practice this

it will take you 10-12 years if you buy into the 10,000 rule. if you want to half that up it to 5-6 hours a day 3 studying 3 doodling or finishing drawings/paintings
