1. The placement of the features is mostly right, but the eyes don't match the perspective of the brow ridge and the rest of the face.
2. The jaw has a sharper angle and the ear sits on the lower part of the cranium, not the neck.
3. You're symbol drawing the eyes. Imagine the eyeball inside the eye socket, with the eyelids following the form of the eyeball.
4. The mouth is a symbol too. The lips follow the round form of the jaw. I haven't read Loomis, but Hampton uses the mouth sphere to place the lips.
I've been following you since day 11, and you improved a lot in terms of proportion and feature placement, but you're still symbol drawing. Hampton helped me with drawing faces, so I recommend his book.

Try shading simple objects first. Set up a light and get a good range of values and draw the object as close as you can get. With enough practice you'll be able to break down complex forms into simple shapes...and all those studies you did? They'll help you figure out the values!

Really cool, love the flow in these. I would say push the simplicity and flow even more. Simplify some subtle curves and really exaggerate others. Get the shape of the head in there! Break it down to just the nose/ear/hair bun, whatever sticks out...and use it! Some of the lines are getting a little too similar, try to keep one more of a curve and break and bend the other to make them different.

I think I'm getting the hang of understanding shapes/gesture and how to apply it in figure drawing, and while I'm far from great I can see some progress in it. The main problem right now is understanding values/rendering, most books I've seen go "okay, here is core shadow, half tones, highlights, cast shadow and reflected light and this is how you apply it on a sphere" and while I managed to do that, I completely fall apart when I try to apply it on a more complex form. Do you guys have any resources or tips on how to get a better grasp at it?

Pic related is my attempt at eyes. First one is from imagination and second is from reference.

True
My best advice is:
Spend half of your time learning to draw anime and the other half learning to draw real eyes /body/etc...
because if you only draw real eyes/face/body, you will end up like those people who cannot draw anime, because their visual library is full of real eyes and no anime faces/body/eyes.

You have... a lot of issues in this piece, the biggest being the fact that it is literally only made of symbols. I cleaned up and adjusted the face a bit, but your biggest issue is you seem to be drawing what you *think* goes in a certain place, and doing it wrong.

The eye is an orb- it should be shaded around the edges. I'm not sure where your light-source is, but given the large amount of highlight on her hair, i assumed some kind of top-down lighting.

The eyes shouldn't be as white as the teeth if they're behind sunglasses. The glasses also shouldn't be highlighted like that unless there is also a light-source in front of her, which would eliminate a lot of the shadows.

The hands are beyond repair- please do some life drawings of them, even from reference.

All in all this could be a good piece- I like the colors you picked out, though I'd reduce the saturation on the turtleneck.

You have potential. Do some form studies and some studies from reference.

Hi original anon here.
Thanks for the reply, really helpful
And for everyone else who did too.
I started this piece as an intention to make it a quick one but that's no excuse.
Good criticism, I'm glad for that.

I have this problem where even after studying Eyes(which is most symbol as you mentioned), I have the tendency to always go back to thinking in lines and relying on a reference.
This probably means strict and proper studying following up.

Hopefully I'll do a complete work and post around again soon.

I'm on mobile so for everyone who have replied and feedback'd, much appreciated!

>I keep autopiolting back to contour drawings
Yeah, with your longer pose I can see that. Seems like you're searching for the right line too much. Not sure how long you've been drawing, but line confidence and accuracy will come with practice. I'd just keep going, do more studies, and try to place one line and let go. If the line was not what you wanted, just move on. Working with a pen kind of helps too.

>shorter poses
Depends on how short. If it's like a one minute pose, I usually go with a broad gesture, doesn't have to be super accurate. It also depends on what you're trying to capture in that minute. If it's gesture, go for that, if you want to focus on a body part, etc...For me, starting with the pelvis or torso is hard, I would need to plan out where my figure will go first. Starting with a body part sounds more like long anatomy studies.

Hope that helps.

I'm also high af right now and couldn't get the captcha like 8 times, so take all that shit with a grain of salt.

If you're not done with all the lessons don't do the 15 pages every day, focus firstly on completing every chapter and doing a page or two of warm ups from the most important lessons on each chapter. Also take time to draw what you want, Irshad says on chapter 0 not to think "I can't do this yet, I'll wait until I get better" but to try and do it now, in order to enjoy the drawing process by itself, without paying any mind to how the finished product is going to look.

Doing a series of 10 minutes portraits to force myself to quickly get used to shapes and pick what matters, I'm very happy with this, is it perfect? No, is it decent? Wouldn't say so but it's something although it's simple I haven't earned the right to be proud of anything just yet, the ones before this one were bad references and a lack of focus on my part.
Now, I have something else to say, I'm reviewing the learning process for maximum efficiency, what should I add to my plate and what to remove?
On Hold - Eviston, Keys to Drawing, Vilppu, Figure drawing, shading, Loomis
Currently in focus - Dexterity, ovals and circles, soon to add drawabox
What's the best and most efficient way to learn right now?
