I can apply perspective to basic shit like a cube, a cylinder, a prism, etc but I get totally retarded when I need to do it with the human body even if I construct the body using those basic figures. Is there a book to help me with this? Even if I use some sort of technique (Coil Technique) for limb foreshortening they look weird as fuck.

I've been practicing gesture using Hampton as reference. I feel like I have the basics down.

What I think I'm struggling with is the concept of "timing". I noticed that Hampton's gestures have a lot of extra lines that add movement. My own gesture practice has been pretty sterile in comparison.

Hampton says at the beginning of the chapter to make it so that every line you put on the page is meaningful to the figure you're creating. How can I add extra lines that are still meaningful to the figure?

There's tons of videos on youtube to help you with rendering but most of your learning will come with experience and experimentation.

>> No.4788950

I've been going through DAB and when not working on my 250 boxes I've been trying to combine shapes while focusing on my lines, perspective and vanishing points like I would for my boxes.

I'll do things like draw a box then try to draw a box that's sitting on top of that box, a rectangular cutout into the box, or really stupid almost Lego like mechs.

This seems to be going well until I try to add anything round. If I try to add a cylinder coming off of the box, of make a "tunnel" through the box it just looks like I drew a circle on a box rather than a 3d image. Is this because round objects in 3 require contour lines/shading to make sense, or is perspective of curved lines just supposed to be really fucking hard?

I am /beg/ and 99% of what I currently produce is shit. To "have fun" I basically have to completely let go of my ego. The "fun" isn't in the end product. It's in the process of getting to any end product at all.

I consider it like a meditation practice. I put down a line. I don't judge the line. Instead, I put down another. I focus on the feeling of the stylus in my hand and the movement I am making and relax my breathing. If I get too frustrated I stand up, take a break, and come back to it when I've got a fresh mind.

If it makes you feel better, go into it with the mindset that no matter what lines you put down on the page, after you've decided you're done you will crumple that page and throw it away.

If I keep a dedicated schedule of 2-3 hours of practice daily is 6 months a good frame of time to achieve a high Intermediate to mid Advanced range of figure drawing, construction, proportions, and rough animation?

I imagine not, and I feel like I have just do not not understand how ellipses are supposed to behave. With something like a box even if I'm not executing it properly I still am aware of how the lines should be converging to a vanashing point, but I have no idea how to manipulate an ellipses to make them appear in the proper orientation

I've done the exercise a bit where you draw random planes and draw ellipses that touch the edges of the plane and can see how it manipulated the ellipses but I can't really apply it when I'm drawing.

As I'm saying this it makes me think I should maybe draw a plane first and draw an ellipses on that plane to project my cylinder to get familiar with adding it to an image. I'll try something really basic when I get home like putting a box on the top of a rod using this method and see how it looks.

my biggest problem are with the feet. I see you were trying for an anime type look, bu seriously why dont any /beg/'s use ref? Industry artists often use the ref to the point of tracing like seriously go look at some riot games process of splash art and you'll notice that it's most likely tracing.

Either way, look at references. Those feet are not anywhere near what real feat look like. Follow example

proportion->gesture->simple volumes>anatomy, at least that's what works for me.
I started with Loomis and copied his mannikin and tried to follow the proportions. Try to invent your own poses with the mannikin too, I see a lot of people only copying what he drew. I watched Proko and Vilppu to learn gesture. Don't get frustrated if you don't get it right. Gesture is deceivingly simple and it gets easier as you understand the body better. I watched Vilppu's lectures on simple volumes next. I tried doing anatomy before this, but I just ended up copying shapes, not volumes. When you get a grasp on volume, I recommend Proko for anatomy. Hampton is also a good choice if you want to learn simplified muscles. With every step, use a lot of references, and remember to have fun. This is by no means a guide, It's a list of recommendations based on my experience. Hope this helps.

Focus on the anatomy of the head then. Learn the skull inside and out. Then learn the facial muscles, then learn the facial fat. Then paint tons and tons of portraits of real heads, to learn the features and possible variations of heads. It's all about building your knowledge of the head. I highly recommend Scott Eaton's Facial Anatomy course, if you can pirate it. If not, I recommend going through every single drawing in Morpho Anatomy's head section and rendering every single drawing.

Use more specialized brush settings. It's an absolute pain in the butt trying to do everything with a single brush even though it can be done.

In Photoshop
Brush 1: Hard round(or any shape really). Opacity set to pen pressure. Standard brush used for everything.
Brush 2: Round brush. Opacity set to pen pressure. Hardness set to 50-75%, has to be a round brush for this setting to be available. Softer blending, but not air brush soft.

Manually set the max opacity to 50% or whatever % below 100% that makes blending easier for you. In Photoshop it's easily done by hitting 5 for 50% and then 0 for 100%.

Air brush + lasso tool. Easily creates gradients with hard edges. Use sparingly/with caution. Too much air brush makes things look too digital.
Anywhere you are trying to blend gradients, but want to maintain hard edges. Use lasso tool and turn off the selection border with ctrl + h(or whatever the hotkey is). If the edges are too hard, you can soften them up afterwards.

Not that I would take my own advice without a bucket of salt. I can't fucking draw.

I had the same problem initially. What I did was initially I switched to using an overhand grip. That felt weird enough that my brain didn't have any problem drawing with my arm. I stuck with that for awhile because I really enjoyed how gestural and pretty it looks, but eventually I noticed that overhand is very limiting if you want to do any digital, so I switched to this weird grip that's in my picture. The one where the pencil is between your pointer and middle finger. This also feels weird enough that my mind doesn't have a problem drawing with my whole arm.

After doing that long enough then drawing with my arm has become so second nature to me and drawing with my wrist feels so unnatural now that I'm able to just draw in the normal writing grip without unconsciously defaulting back to my wrist.

If you're going to construct a head, construct it, don't guess or eyeball it. At this stage, it's not even about drawing well. Just making sure that you follow the construction lines will make sure your face doesn't turn out lopsided.

In Drawing the Head and Hands by Loomis, he says the brow line, eyeline, mouth generally follow the same perspective(in some extreme angles, there's some fuckery, but you don't need to worry about that), doing so, really simplifies the process.

So yeah, construction, construction, construction, it's an easy fix. After that, go through the loomis book I mentioned so you get an idea of how the eyes and mouth are placed in perspective then tudy a fuckton of faces and skulls(search for a 3d skull on sketchfab so you can play around with it. ).

Wanted to do something quick as to not break the attempt at drawing streak. I really need to learn a way to judge portions better. I got the iten accuracy guide so im gonna take a look at that sometime. I also dont know how to get the torso shape that people construct for most bodies.

Not that guy but I would recommend watching Hampton's figure drawing videos. He goes over landmarks, and this drawing has pretty obvious landmarks where her ribcage is. You had the right idea with finding that boxy shape using the corners of her pelvic bones, you can do the same with the point where the 10th rib is on either side.

It can get tricky when referencing another drawing, especially more stylized ones like anime stuff, as sometimes they aren't anatomically correct themselves. You just have to look for the spots where the ribs push against the skin, which luckily this artist conveyed properly.

If you're anything like me you learned to draw females using tutorials and similar resources that hold your hand. For drawing non-beefcake males, you are basically on your own. It's up to you to ascertain and study how slim males musculature and skeletal framework are put together. It's up to you to find a construction method that works. You can't just grind muscle studies and gloss over male anatomy by giving the male roided up football trapezues, deltoid, pectoral, etc muscles. You have to think carefully about what you're drawing. It's the metaphysical price you pay for having good taste.

3 ways to practice:
1) draw from life/reference
2) draw from imagination
3) draw along with somebody really good (huston, vilppu, et al)

if you get into a flow state doing any one of these three things, you're practicing right

to take your hands to the next level practice drawing simple forms and look up videos on construction (huston has a good video on hands). draw along with him and then draw from reference and imagination and you will improve

Moreover the character you are tracing is from the artist houtengeki. He has a book on how to draw his characters. Learn his methods and watch his youtube video to understand the process he uses (for example, he uses posemaniac, starts with line work).

Lastly, trace lighter and looser, and then use PEN for the final lines. pen will make a world difference in the quality of your drawings.

Nothing wrong with stabilizers. I tried the using different brushes thing, but it gets annoying fast. Most artist use hard round/air brush and customize it exactly to their liking. You will eventually make your own brush in the next year or so depending on how much you draw. This will come naturally so don't rush it. You will slowly learn what you like in each brush.

Download kyle's megapack and just wing out different brushes. Over time you'll figure out exactly what you like.

You learn a bit of ALL the fundamentals a little at a time. You'll never master any of them any time soon.

I would start with drawabox since it does basic perspective and basic construction. I recommend this because learning to sketch really well helps at improving and getting millage.

The only thing I recommend against learning too early is anatomy. You need a solid understanding of construction, perspective, and shapes to do anything noteworthy with anatomy, and 9/10 you can make something decent without anatomy anyway.

> 5) If you used the proper shapes they'll be a twink.
> 6) Still confused what shapes to use? Look at other artist works.

Noice, real solid work. I've never liked the last stage in these drawings, feels like the gesture is a lost a bit and it kills the sense of weight in the figure, but maybe that's normal, at least I had that same problem as well. Some boxes for the pelvis look a bit off, but you just need to keep practicing. Remember to draw it with the same dimensions consistently.

Which one of these has better proportions? I am experimenting with different sizes but I feel they are wrong.

I will draw over some reference photos after this.

Thank you, I didnt know about Houtgengeki's YT channel. I will check it out. Would you recommend that I drop the Huston Course I'm currently trying to get through for Hampton and Vilppu or should I check them out after?

I think it'll take time for me to get used to pen entirely. You mean like ballpoint, fine point or fountainhead?

Am I better off beginning to learn digital or on paper instead? I have a tablet and have a little more knowledge when it comes to the whole layering tricks but hand movements on paper feel a lot more natural to me.
What would you consider the best to exercise on? Thanks!
