Why You Should Copy Anime:
https://i.imgur.com/zNDsyF0
https://youtu.be/t_IODIIYAe0

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

Started studying Doppel's artstyle in depth on sunday, I'm a complete beginner when it comes to shading and I like to think that I'm mid to late /beg/ at most when it comes to drawing, pic related are my studies so far, I'm not at all happy with the shading in most cases, and I think I can do better with more practice which I shall do in the following days as I will practice legs, torso, head, etc.. However when it comes to his linework I think I got a good gist of it and I plan to search for a brush that most resembles his when I am finishing these studies, if anyone has any pointers on how I can improve with shading to more closely resemble Doppel's that would be fantastic, I legit could not figure out how he shaded bottom row for example, I tried my best to replicate it but I couldn't do that much of a good job.

It's a really wide angle with tons of distortion. You won't be able to construct over it without a lot of fudging. This the danger of drawing straight from photos, images like this are particularly bad reference but get posted the most often here. In real life, you wouldn't see the head like that. Study the basics of photography and how wide angle versus telephoto affect the perspective distortions.

Yep. Still sucks but you have to push through. My only advice is work hard but take breaks when you hit the wall. There comes a point where max effort does nothing. Just relax and get back to it after a cool down or work on something else. My closest to folding up and quitting was thinking I could just force understanding and feeling retarded for not getting it. hey thanks anon. by the end of this year, it'll have been 3 years since i decided to consciously improve. i didn't start completely from zero, since i drew here and there while i was a student. pic related is from around 2017. i went pretty hard at it but i eased up in the last couple of months. i'm trying to get back into a serious mindset so i'm posting my work more frequently in the last couple of days

also i've been seeing some anons here post about how they haven't been improving in years so i don't really want to be like "hey look at me, i worked at it and made some progress" because i'm not sure that's helpful for people who are seemingly in a rut... i'm pretty happy with my progress but to be honest, when i started i had higher expectations haha. it all seems silly now that i've mellowed out a bit. anyway it's late and i'm rambling, sorry

Cute tummy, cute nipples. Definitely work on your hands, mine is not perfect but I redlined a more natural placement for the pose. I recommend moving the left (to the viewer) eye slightly down (remember the face is not a flat plane, even anime style) and raising up the cheek/cheekbone. Add blush as well to match the rendering style of the body. Other things of note is to blend out the center of the ribcage so the appearance is not so gaunt, and don't forget the shading to indicate the mons pubis.

I don't think anyone has mentioned this, but one issue I notice with your coloring is that you're putting the blush way too low on the cheeks. Studying some basic makeup stuff could help you, but as a quick tip you should be painting the blush on the higher side of the cheek bone, starting from around the bottom outside edges of her eyes. If you paint it as low as you currently are, it gives the impression of sagging or not as youthful of a look.

Yeah. I really cannot take it easy and the pressure does me no good either. All in all I feel deeply ashamed and sad about my inability to improve, the fact that the process is still a massive struggle for me at every step and the end result. I find absolutely not a single reedemable thing about what I come up with and truly hate my work and me for it. On top of everything I started very late in life (31) so I have time against me and that makes you feel desperate as well.
>do you do any still lifes? just simple objects from boxes and cylinders and stuff. i have fewer expectations and less attachment when i do stuff like that, allowing for cool headed self critique.
Last one I did something like this was 3 months ago. It also made me miserable in the sense it was both boring and felt like I was wasting time.

Hopefully I can get there someday, but I feel super miserable every day about this, if I try to take a break it just makes things worse. The only thing I have in my favor is work culture but everything feels like a mistake. In the end Im my very own biggest crab.

idk how you're going about art, but considering you're in this anime study thread, i'm assuming you've focused on a specific style.

the best way to get "good" fast is figure drawing, plain and simple. draw what you see all the time. the anime style you're after can come later, or alongside the figure drawing. once you get the essentials down it, things start to feel limitless.

As you just started, that's fine. However there's a period of warmup I find I have to make myself go through every day. I have to get out 20-40 minutes of crap drawings and warmup before I can start doing things I actually "like" with my control of the pencil. If you're only doing an hour, you're barely making it to the part where you're warmed up and have the dexterity to draw.

Try to knock out the warmups sometime during the day so you're not constantly warming up with no progress before you go to bed. I can't tell you how many hours/days I wasted by only getting through my warmups and going to bed.

Proportions are kinda crazy, like 5.5. I like the rendering, but she looks like she's falling over. Your perspective is all over the place which is "wrong". We're looking down at or even some parts but many parts below them are as if we're viewing from below. Pick a horizon line and stick with it drawing everything above it as viewed from below and everything below it as viewed from above.

it's much wiser to hide the stuff you like to draw in private than share it with your audience who probably will lynch you for sharing anything creep and taboo. (unless you have an alternate artstyle and name you can run by)

this is why you need to make good friends with similar interests, so you too can get to enjoy what they're hiding from everybody.
