I recently started Steve Huston's Beginner Figure Drawing. As soon as I finished Part 1, I tried to do some 2 minute gesture drawings. It took a bit longer than I'd expect to try to get some general idea of the gesture lines. 1 and 2 are from the lecture video. 3, 4 and 5 are from quick poses. Do I have the right idea when it comes to doing gesture?

A lot of /beg/ advice in the sticky recommends Loomis. I've been working with Figure Drawing. My problem is that there are no exercises, so I don't really know what to do. Should I recreate each page? Focus on just the basic mannikin? How can I know if I'm improving or just spinning my wheels?

Get Vilppu's Drawing Manual or Hampton's Figure Drawing: Design and Invention, it's a lot better than Loomis for figure drawing IMO. You wanna focus specially on gesture now (do not neglect the other stuff tho)

But the more you study, the better, so get Loomis' books and
>Copy each drawing once, specially anatomy stuff
>Draw the manikin while looking at reference photos, paying attention to proportions

>How can I know if I'm improving or just spinning my wheels?
Draw a figure right now in the best way you can, looking at reference or from imagination, keep it in a safe place and draw it again in a month or two. If you study everyday correctly, you WILL see improvement. Don't worry about it too much for now.

Are you able to draw a clean head template? This pic just has squiggly lines everywhere and its hard to tell what you're trying to accomplish with it. Try taking it slower. Find all the proportion lines first, then lay the features over. The mouth is misaligned, the ear is too far back (should hang off the side line not the back of the head), and the chin is too long. Huston is great because he simplifies the head and teaches you how to draw the head from any angle (with Loomis I struggled with this aspect.) However, if you’re having issues with proportions Huston may not be the guy for you at the moment, he just glosses over that stuff in my opinion.

Here are my gesture studies from random images, does anyone know what I can improve on?It feels like I’ve been studying gesture forever but it still hasn’t really clicked.

And if my input on your gestures is of any help, it looks like some anatomy is off a little bit and some of the poses look unnatural, should be an easy fix with practice though.

I think you should work on constructing the brow ridge and the side planes of the face. Keep in mind that the dent created by the brow ridge exists even if it's covered by eyelids and fat. The upper side plane is much bigger than you think and extends to the brow ridge. You did a pretty good job overall, but it may be more beneficial for you to study the skull along with the face in order to understand the underlying construction better.

If you're just trying to capture gesture these have way too much contour going into them. Gesture is all about being loose and free with the lines to try and feel around for a pose that looks fluid, you can build the form on top afterward. A lot of these are very stiff, some of them literally just being someone standing straight up. Have you tried learning from Vilppu or Hampton? Hampton really clicked with me and he goes into a nice amount of depth in only about an hour.

Me >>4785087 again. This is just a quick rendition of how I learned gesture. I chose your best one and tried to push the gesture a little further. Someone better than me at this could probably push it further easily. The basic idea is, throw all proportion and contour and anatomy out the window in the gesture phase. Use loose, flowy strokes to define the gesture, go over it with basic 3D forms and make small corrections to proportions and etc. After all of that you can delve into anatomy and shit, which I still haven't done myself but I'll get there eventually I hope. I'll reiterate Hampton's figure drawing course, or his book, whichever you want. He's a really good instructor.

not this >>4785739 Anon here

I will only touch the face and head cause no time cause that seems to be the most pressing I would guess you used a ref for the body but not for the hands and the head.

The face appears to be flat as if you are unsure which part goes where in 3D. The head is a sphere and the face is a 3D object its parts move and align based on the angle you look at them. if you loo at it from the bottom view like you drew everything on the lower part moves upward making the chin and the underside of the nose look bigger. The lips start to curve upwards, the eyes also curve upwards and the upper lashes appear longer and thicker. The forehead seems shorter and the hair on the top also seems shorter. The ears also move down to follow the line of the eyebrows and the nose.

Finally the center of the neck becomes more pronounced, the throat, trachea etc. bulge out because the balance of the head moves back so the neck stretches out forward in the front which causes the front muscles to relax and stretch out.

There are some other things, hands weird, perspective slightly off but I think this could help your knowledge most.

Thanks! I'm not confident in my drawings so for me i'm really beg level still.
I just started undertanding forms and tridimensionality more intuitively and i'm trying to step into values area without worring about construction too much, these were basically my first values studies after ctrl paint videos, i kinda like them but they're still odd, i know i have a bunch of shit to fix.
Thanks for the kind words!

For certain object shapes, yes. You need to remember that only one of those boxes you got is actually rectangular, though. The sides the converge to the point on the left are parallel, but the other sides are not.

depends on your skill level. level zero is literal tracing, then a 1:1 copy makes it a little bit harder, put it on a second monitor to make it a bit harder, stop doing 1:1 and just learn ratios and proportion, with enough work you will start using references just to fill your visual library so you can create things without copying.

you can actually make money just by tracing like in pic

I need help with his anatomy, are the proportions of his limbs spot on? Also any hints of how to make his body look more attractive without putting abs?

Why did you construct something that's supposed to be a lose sketch? Not trying to be mean, the construction you did looks pretty good. Just wondering.

the anatomy isnt wrong, there just isnt gesture, flow, life, anything in the image. It is stiff and soulless

I think you made the face a little too narrow

look at the lips vs the original

unironically vilppu, proko or hampton. Like >>4787820
said, your drawing has no gesture or flow, or any resemblance of form. The proportion is pretty good, with the exception of the head. If you want to make his body attractive, try constructing it with volume in mind.

yea anime sucks and is easy mode so the least you could do is be a little bit more on model. That's just my opinion on that genre. I like the old anime of the good old days. Here's some of mine, these too could use a more accurate touch up but fug it you can get away with shit in anime

You're not too bad tho, good stuff just keep at it

Need to sit down and learn eyes instead of symbol drawing circles.

Also every other body part. But mostly eyes.
