Finally got time to sit down with this.

Advice on how to face?

I also want to push myself to ink something because I know I will have to work on that eventually and might as well practice now. Any good resources on what to use and where to start?

I hate hands.

I feel like i nailed the reflections from lighting but maybe not the shading. Also, this started out as an attempt to copy it as well as i could but along the way i just noticed i had to start over to nail it picture perfectly so i just kept doing my own thing, should i start over in the future?

Also, im not quite sure its a good idea to keep the lines when youre doing lighter and darker areas because these two styles maybe dont mix well? Should i use lines as a first draft and then change it into lighter and darker shades to mark different shapes and objects?

Did you do a sketch or a rough outline before starting painting? If not I think you should as there's quite a few incosistencies with the reference picture to do with where things are in relation to eachother. If you can clean that up it should be easier for you to see where the shadows should be.

Your colours are a little off but in this situation thats not a massive issue, I think you need to work on not being affraid to add dark shadows to your work as a lot of places where it should be black or close to black.

Also just try to add some texture to the wooden pieces as its a good thing to practice and it should probably help the piece feel more realistic.

I don't get figure drawing at all.
So i need to start with drawing gestures before going into anatomy & proportion,
but the book talks about all these force thing, which it doesn't teach you how to find the force, but show you the force and tell you "look, this is the force.",
then talk about how it's not about the contour or the body, focus only on the force,
Immediately, they started drawing the contour and the body on the force, asking me to feel the form.

What did they skipped? why?
How can i feel the form if i don't even know the body's anatomy?
How do i find the force?
From what i see, they are only drawing part of the contour, but exaggerate the lines, making it more curvy.
What is this balance thing they are talking about?
If my figure is not standing, shouldn't it have uneven balance? Like when it's mid-air, or running, or pulling something.
Are these something that i can only get from an art teacher and not from a book?
Please help, i'm very very confused and reading books doesn't help me at all.

Drawing from imagination is essentially drawing from your visual library. You need references for that.

And you can "draw from imagination" using references as well. References help guide you. For example, you can use a snake reference to see how the scales should look on that picture (assuming the body is a snake, but you get the idea). If you brainlessly just copy what you see, then you're not using reference material correctly.

and yes you can move onto the next lesson but you never move on from gesture, you do gesture forever, its an amazing warm up tool and you should do it daily but just dont get too caught up in it

My incredibly armature opinion the first one looks good because the energy feels consistent throughout the pose. The legs are squeezed, the shoulders raised, the arms straightened. But then on the legs extended they're nice and relaxed, but there's still these tense shoulders and arms that just seem to clash. A more reclined spine and dropped shoulders to make the pose look more "relaxed" might make it more cohesive.

Mouse/rat doesnt have nearly any detail on it and doesnt have any shading to depict form. The rat also seems to be standing in just the wrong position entirely. I think the rat could also be a bit bigger. You did a good job with shading the metal but it looks kind of fuzzy instead of metallic in some areas so I'd try to fix that up. If you need a reference for how to make metallic texture I'd recommend looking at Riot games' splash art of some of their metallic skins like pic related.

Think of the light being produced from the lighter as a small sphere, and its area of effect covers the face and chest area.
Use lighter highlights to show the contours of the chest area and a darker one where the face covers the neck, because the face is blocking the light and will make the neck area darker. It'll also help make the head and neck more distinct instead of blended like it is here.

Knowing your shapes and forms first and foremost. Construction is your best friend. If you got the money, do Dynamic Sketching from CGMA. If you're short on money and don't mind excessive grinding, you can do DrawaBox. I recommend Dynamic Sketching because you get more personalized critiques and it doesn't grind excessive shit like DAB does. It also goes at a faster pace, which is nicer.

Then anatomy can come so you have a better understanding of the structure of the skull and head. Michael Hampton would be good at this point. Since your fundamental drawing skills should be alright from Dynamic Sketching, picking up on anatomy won't be as bad since you can see underlying forms in the anatomy.

Then comes lighting/material understanding. I recommend Izzy Medrano, as he covers basically everything you need to know about lighting and color.

The reason I recommend those two is because you actually get critiques. That is so important at the beginning for an artist. They need to see what they are missing and getting wrong along with what they are getting correct.

I would say stick to one of those. BUT on the side, do you other work. The instructor at DAB is very stern on ensuring that you do art for fun, even when doing DAB. He even says to do a 50/50 split. So if you want to get better AND quicker, I think it's best you choose one of those. If motivation is a killer, then do the recommended drawing on the side for fun. After all, art is supposed to be enjoyable.

Alright. I think I'll do DAB. My only question is whether or not they accept digital submissions. Atleast until I go out and buy supplies.

not op but the instructor only accepts pencil for lesson 1 homework, let alone digital. after that it all needs to be pen. So it's worth reading some of the topics, and the first homeworks (where it is just lines, no boxes yet) are good general warm ups and practices, so you can just do those for now as they're a good exercise to have in general.

i'm doing these after a long time without drawing, so i'm kinda remembering stuff, and there are huge intervals between drawings, thats why they are inconsistent.
I feel like i'm beggining to understand some stuff now, but i'm still pretty lost, what i'm doing wrong on the drawings?

This is OP again.

Actually, no. They only accept pen. To be specific, they would like a fineliner marker/pen. He goes into details on the lesson on what kind of supplies you need. And you really don't need much.

The main thing is pens and paper and maybe a straight edge for drawing some guidelines and perspective lines. You may want to get an ellipse guide later down the road.

Like I said, the site goes more into detail on the supplies needed.

Hey /ic/, what do you think of this rough skeleton? Anything I need to adjust before I go ahead with the greater details?
