I think the main problem with the characters is that they're too complicated and hard to draw for the animators, that's probably why the show seems inconsistent. they look nice, but tracking all those details must be hell. usually when characters are so complex, it'll be a rigged show (like ruby gloom) or it'll be done in 3D

I disagree, I think the designs are pretty appealing. They're garish, but the silhouettes are pretty distinct, there's some nice flow, good shapes, and they're all very cohesive. They just seem like a chore to animate (I just noticed that the cat guy has card suits on the inside of his wings, which is painful to even think about). It sort of feels like the opposite extreme to some other modern cartoons, which have leaned toward excessively simple designs

The way i see it, its about the demographic its aiming for. He is designed to appeal to tumblrites/deviantart teens who adore overdesigned, quirky, unique snowflakes that are as edgy as humanly possible. That could also mean its the Helluvaboss pilot she also produced, which I hope it is. Character designs are way more acceptable to a conventional audience, besides the furry. Their designs are less detailed which would kick down animation budget, and the core idea of the show is far more, ehm, relatable and less cuh-ringe or something. if you want to sell the spider concept more, you can make the extra eyes he's supposed to have more discernible (i thought the pink spots were freckles or some sort of makeup), maybe make it so they all have black sclera, give him moe fangs to mimic the mandibles that tarantulas have, etc.

It's mostly personal preference. The overly complex designs aren't impossible to animate, just very inconvenient. The animation in the pilot is mostly stills with only the mouths and hands moving and whenever the characters move they go off model because keeping track of all the tiny details like symbols, gradients and mostly fur/hair spikes is very time consuming and a pain to animate.
Maybe its just my personal taste but I think it would look a lot better if the designs were simpler and more effort was put into actual animation instead.

Left middle guy: Remove the normal arms and Make the wings arms. Get rid of the top hat and bow tie since his thing seems to be that he naturally has suit-like fur markings and thus more explicit accessories work against that. Also remove the dumb hearts on the face

Tiny girl on the left: she's too petite dor such a short character, and the black arms further obfuscate her hands. Stretch her out horizontally and make her arms yellow.
