Why You Should Copy Anime:
https://i.imgur.com/zNDsyF0
https://youtu.be/t_IODIIYAe0

**Strive for quantity AND quality.**

Anime Studying:
>Copy anime references exactly and draw them from memory. Use illustrations, screenshots, anime figures, 3D models, etc.
>Don’t copy recklessly. Use construction, color theory, and other fundamental concepts to rehearse a drawing process that you can later easily manipulate for original artwork.
>Post all of your anime studies. Post even when you’re told not to. Create an art community that actually draws and improves together instead of just talking about it.
>Number your attempts and link to your previous posts.
>Critiquers should lead by example by posting their studies.

General Anime Style Discussion:
>Questions about achieving certain styles/techniques/compositions etc.
>Drawing methods, study habits, resources, tutorials, tools, software, etc
>Be specific and try to post a sample of your study attempts before asking for help.

**Draw copies from good anime styled references to mindfully up our mileage, internalize appealing aesthetics, and learn from each other’s processes and knowledge.**

/beg/ here, opinions on pic related?
Also some questions.
I've been watching some videos about about drawing and all of them recommend to use references for drawing, but is this okay? It feels like i'm cheating or how does this works?
Do i need to deconstruct and draw over and over again correctly until i memorize it?
Does this apply for every pose or just for complicated ones?
Do i get faster just by keep drawing? Doing this sketch took me almost 30 minutes

The pose you’re attempting is not easy because of the perspective (even though it is a common anime pose).

That said, you get faster at breaking down the pose/reference the more you draw. Everyone uses references, it’s not cheating, if you copy it exactly it is called “realism” if you don’t copy it exactly it just normal art. You draw what you like, in the beginning everything looks weird and wonky and you can’t tell you’re drawing weird and wonky shit but other /begs/ will shit on you for that, you’ll get shit on for getting things wrong that you cannot percept. The people here thinks that is called “critique”. So I recommend you draw things you cannot get wrong, which is literally copying a piece you like. This is called a study, if you draw wonky shit you can percept it because you have the target next to you, if it doesn’t look exactly like what the master has drawn then you can fix it.

Regarding your drawing, there are issues w/ the pose you drew, but your ability to percept these mistakes will increase and maybe in a month you can come back and realise what went wrong. So it doesn’t make sense to critique what is wrong.

>Head is small, feels western
I agree but I hope those are two uncorrelated statements. It's actually a western problem to draw anime-style with heads too big. Asian beauty ideals actually specify having a small face/head, and big faces are unwanted outside of childish styles/ literal children.

if anything, it's the blurry rendering/thick sketchy lines that make it look western, not the proportions.

Simply having big eyes won't make something anime
It is about the relationship between the eyes, nose and mouth, the stylization particularly of the nose, interocular distance, the placement of the face on the head (how far up the head the face extends), and the proportion of the head in relation to the rest of the body
The most common un-anime-ish features i see are noses followed by having actual lips, and eyes which don't "conform" to the anime "symbol language"
Anime is drawn a certain way so that it is simple to animate, and manga is drawn so that it can be printed in black and white. They can't do all this crazy bullshit with subtly shaded eyes or ridge of the nose because of these limitations. You can do it by all means, but it will look thoroughly western anime influenced as opposed to native eastern authored

I was doing a quick draw but then my power went out. Focus on big shapes, stay zoomed out (for me it was 67-100% of what you posted), use much bigger brushes. You didn't need to be using such a small brush or focus on small rendering details when it wasn't close to finished. The shadows don't make much sense. That head angle is indeed tough to show the back eye and you'll notice it's really not drawn often in anime style. Give her cranium more mass and it helps. The pony tail also is just a blob, you should have focused more on a shape than trying to do any color. You'd probably still want to show her left butt cheek.

A practice I'd recommend is only using a hard, opaque brush with no opacity jitter and focus on shapes and notan: the harmony between light and dark in an image. Get images to work with just black and white before trying to go to color. Soejima is really good for this, and he's heavily inspired by old fighting games. Even if it's not a style you end up using, it's a valuable exercise for painting to get drawings looking good in black and white.

You shouldn't really be color picking from the ref to begin with. As the other anon said, tile your colors and then blend some of the edges to be softer or lost. A very common beginner mistake with digital is to overblend. Think with very simple shapes and planes like boxes, cylinders, and spheres, and it makes it a lot easier to manage a painting. Blending should be the last thing you really think of. Only place I would definitely lean toward a soft brush is the face. Contrast of hue, value, and saturation can all be used to make hard or soft edges.

I got to mastering the style then because i stayed true to it and learned as much as i could about it, i got to the point where i could successfully add my own DNA to it and people responded well to it.

I use some of the elements i learned from this supposed inferior style, that makes my original art look better in certain instances. In reality, it wasnt that it was an inferior style. It trumped mine obviously, i just didnt really give much thought to it at the time.

So now i have the style i struggle with, that im fusing with the new shit, and something else that nets me some extra cash. If anything, adopting other styles offers you versatility and a way to improve your own style.

>what is the best way of learning an artist's style?
Just like how you learn anything else.
Analyze and study.
Take the arts of the artist, analyze how they draw certain things, let's say eye.
Find out the proportion, find out the ratio of the eyes, look at how the lineart works, what's the basic shape and what/how many strokes did the artist used to draw the line, where it starts and where it ends.

You don't draw like you always do.
You abandon everything about yourself and you mimic the artist as much as you can.
Unless you're just doing one of those "Inspired by X artist" drawing.

Until you can draw a close resemblance to the artist's reference drawing, you can't draw your own drawing but using the artist's style.

Not exactly what i'm finding.
I'm looking for the details & line art in hands.
Using mine as example,
In the red circle, those are the details for the hand instead of just the contour.
I want some tips for which details do i need, and how do i draw them.

I did some more studies from Millennium Actress tonight. more faces and stuff.
>>4780131
I've found that doing studies from other artists focussing on what they leave in/leave out helps a bunch. at the bottom of my page I did a few studies of some hand poses from Millennium Actress that I thought were interesting. if you get ten artists to each draw the same hand pose, you'll get ten very different drawings, so it's hard to give tips for something so specific because it's very much a personal taste thing. some artists like them really detailed, some draw them with almost no detail at all, it's up to you to choose how to stylize them. drawing from other artists will help you develop a 'sense' or a 'feel' for what details you like to include.

Start with Section 11
https://www.ctrlpaint.com/library

Do studies from things around you in real life like at your desk, do photo studies. Don't use the color picker from photos/reference unless it's to check your work. Study work from other artists. There are a lot of ways to go about learning and understanding but it almost all goes back to understanding how light in real life works.

I'd recommend looking at books like David Hornung Color, Schmid Alla Prima, and Gurney's Color and Light.

I made tons of improvements when I joined a closed Discord server for digital artists (mostly japanese-style). The group is at around ~50 (not telling exact numbers) big but really active with contests, critique channels and I even got better artists lecture me about understanding figure flow and anatomy.
I was only invited to that server through a friend who was already in it, so I have no experience searching and joining one that is going to be useful.
